THE Warmest Mittens?

I'm thinking about taking advantage of the end-of-the-season sales to pick up some super warm mittens. My hands get cold really easily, so I'm hoping other Divas can offer some suggestions.

I've had some Grandoe Updowns for about a year. And though they started out plenty warm, they're packed down now and leave something to be desired. Waterproofing is important, too.

Anyone?

Scotts have worked for me

I had surprising good luck this past winter with Scott gloves. I couldn't believe how superior they were for warmth compared to the Marmot Randonees I previously had (spring gloves now). So I guess I'll put in a vote for Scott. I've only used their gloves, however, and liked them enough that I bought a second pair. Newer insulation means they don't FEEL as thick as some other types. I did a quick search and see that they're on sale at Level Nine Sports. For this price, maybe worth a try??

Some of the best reviews on warmth that I have read are on the Black Diamond Mercury Mittens.

Just keep waiting to find them on sale...missed BDs sale last year! Also another thing the reivews stated is that they run LARGE, just not big!

Right now I have some Swany mittens that are pretty good.

I think that's the model I have. I own about 4 different pairs of Black Diamond gloves and mittens, and those mittens are the warmest I've ever owned. Much happier with them than with the Mountain Hardwear and Swany mitts they replaced. The leather is really soft, liners are removeable, gaiters are long enough to keep snow and wind out, and they have a separate thing for your index finger in the mitten, which you can use or not depending on if your finger gets cold, but when you use it, they're very well articulated for mittens. No problems buckling boots or getting pole straps on. Anyway - 2 thumbs up for Black Diamond mittens! :D

Oh I'm so glad you posted this thread. I need to find something warmer than my Level gloves. Although I love them there have been 2 days this season where I could jsut not keep my fingers warm. I'd have my fingers pulled up in the body of my gloves during the lift ride to get them semi-back warm and even then was having to run inside every few runs to get my feeling back.

I have OR Verglas mitts. Outer mitt with a mitt liner. My fingers have never been numb in them, and my fingers/toes are always cold, and get numb very easily.

My warmest mitts were a pair of Burtons. I just lost them, and I'm so bummed! They were leather with a thin quilted down layer on the back of the hand. Inner glove that was not removable, but it always wicked moisture and never got damp. Nice long wrist gaiter. Never had cold fingers in them, ever.

I have Swany Toaster Leather mittens as do a number of other coaches on my team. LOVE them. They have a built in liner and a zipper that allows me to pull my fingers out to do things without completely removing the mitten. These have been a savior while standing around coaching, fastening helment buckles, adjusting gaiters and goggles etc on sub-zero days.

Another vote for Swany Toasters. How good is the side zip that lets your fingers out? I stick a heater pack in the zip pocket on extreme days. The only complaint I have is that they don't have a wrist elastic.

I'm resuming my mitten search, so I'm reviving this thread.

Does anyone with the Black Diamond mitts find that they run large and that the gaiters are extremely long? I've been reading some reviews that say that's the case.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

I also have Swany mitts, although not the super fancy ones that Robyn and Shellski have. They are so warm that I can't ever wear them all day. I love them!!!

DH has Black Diamond Kingpin gloves and they do run large. He is wearing one size smaller than his dakine, swany, mountain hardware or marmots. I don't have any experience with the mitts though.

I have the Black Diamond Patrol Mitt - Women's - in Medium, these run true to size, I wear Medium in Swany too. I also got them in an end of season sale and haven't had them out on the hill. I wanted some really warm mitts as my hands are always cold, these have a lovely sheepskin type lining, and good flexible leather on the outside. There is no inbuilt liner glove - which is good, I hate having to search for finger holes inside a mitten, and this gives me the opportunity to wear my own liners and launder them frequently. I think they are going to be very warm. The gauntlet is not as generous as I like, it will slip on over a snug cuff, but I usually like gloves to go on with no fiddling around.

I have the Swany Toaster mittens as well - with the zipper on the side. I have been wearing this brand for the last 10 years and haven't liked anything else as much. I have the leather and the synthetic.
