The Thankfulness Thread

It's a week til Thanksgiving. And aside from the things we're all thankful for: family, friends, a loving spouse/SO, what do you have to be especially thankful for this year?

I am especially thankful that I am able to ski again now! I am SO thankful for that! You have no idea!

Ok, I know loving spouse is not supposed to be on the list but I never realized how much my life would change after finding the "right" guy. It is one of the things I am consciously grateful of all the time.

Other than that, I'm grateful I discovered skiing; its an amazing sport!

There are so many things I'm grateful for, it's hard to articulate......the sheer beauty around us, the kind spirit that so many people share, life in general.........

I am thankful I got a great new job in Feb. because the personalities at the old one were challenging to deal with.

I'm also thankful for modern medicine, and antibiotics in particular.

What about you, SkiDiva?

Aside from all the things you mentioned about loved ones, I am grateful for computers. Living in rural Vermont, I can stay connected to those loved ones, people who like to ski (Divas), and shop all from my home. Oh yes, and pay my bills. It is a wonderful invention.

Great topic!

I am thankful for a great job. I've been here 14 months now and still love it which is a first for me. I went through 3 months of unemployment and 3 months of a miserable job right before this one so even the most frustrating days here are better than the best days previously.

I am thankful that I get to ski, essentially whenever I want. I have passes to 6 mountains and can take off random weekdays to get in some turns then. I am thankful that coaching season is just a few weeks away!

I am most thankful for my wonderful husband of 25 years who never complains about all the time I spend skiing - and who encourages me to take the boys skiing - even though he's not a skier himself.

I am thankful for my 3 sons who are basically happy and healthy - and who still like to ski with Mom.

I am thankful that I passed the Virginia Bar Exam. It had been 17 years since I last took (and passed) a bar exam. I had an awful lot of material to relearn. It was good to find out I still had the skills in me to study hard and pass.

I am thankful for this forum - where I can connect with other women skiers!

What about you, SkiDiva?

Wow. So many things (in no particular order):

1) Like Lilgeorg, computers. I have a love/hate relationship with them. Sometimes I curse their very existence. But without them, this forum wouldn't be able to exist. And then we wouldn't be having this conversation. And then what!!!!!!????

2) The amazing success of my husband's book, Finn. I don't want to sound too boastful or like I'm pushing this at you ladies all the time, but I am so, so proud of all the terrific reviews this book has received -- and particularly its nomination for the John Sargent First Novel Prize. It was also just named one of the best books of the year by Amazon, as well as by Booksense, the Association of Independent Booksellers. Mr. SD worked so hard and really delivered a work of art. No matter how many times I've heard him read it at readings, it still continues to blow me away.

3) That I finally sold my house in PA during the depths of a miserable housing market, and was able to move to Vermont. I love it here. I know it doesn't compare skiing-wise to out west, but it beats the pants off of southeastern Pennsylvania!

4) That I get to ski as much as I do. (Not that I wouldn't mind skiing more, but I guess I have to be thankful with what I got!)

Ski Diva, I just read the review of the book and it sounds incredible. I'll be picking this one up soon.

1. After decades of very poor health, with that being the focus of getting thru every day, I am so thankful that I can now get up each morning and simply function as a human being with minimal pain.

2. After years of work dictating my every move (that my health hadn't dictated first), I am so thankful I had the strength to stop that phase of my life and the courage to step into the unknown. Now I actually have a life.

3. After not having the strength or time to devote to developing a healthy relationship, I am so thankful those circumstances changed so I could meet and marry my sweet man.

4. I am so thankful to God for getting me thru those years and bringing me to where I am now. I wouldn't trade a moment of any of it, for I am truly blessed.

I'm not sure I'm feeling "thankful". I do take what I have for granted. ;)

Just got news I got a raise. I guess the timing makes it a Thanksgiving Gift?

Wow, thanks Divas for sharing.

My turn:

I am thankful for my amzaing familyl My dad is 92 and my mom is 83 and brought me to Utah in 1969, when I found my skiing life. My in-laws that provided us with the resources to chart a future.

My husband who tolerates my career and the traveling all over the country it requires.

My three wonderful children (who fosrake their skiing roots and become avid boarders--though my daughter is coming back to the skiing).

My ski hosting at the best ski resorts in the country.

My excellent health, permitting me to run and ski at 55 years of age.

My Pocket Rockets who have given me such joy in past years when there was powder, before the global warming stuff.

My Alaska wolf-mix dog, Johnny, who was the best damn dog I ever had and kept the critters at bay in the wilds of Montana and Wyoming.

Thanks for letting me share.

Hope to see many of the Divas in Utah in March. Pray for pow-pow.

I know you said other than family, but....I'm thankful for:
My wonderful husband (of 31 years)
3 terrific sons
having a mother who's a best friend as well as my mother
ski buddies to share the winter with
and, of course, pets!
Also...a good cup of coffee

I am thankful that my left foot healed so well. I fell down the stairs with my 2 week old son in a sling back in June and when I twisted so I wouldn't land on him, I snapped the 5th metatarsal in my left foot. I was in a walking boot cast all summer. I asked the orthopedic if it would affect my ski season and he felt that aside from some lingering slight swelling, I should be okay (then went on to tell me about his "conference" last year out West and how he skied for 5 days ... blah blah blah ...). It's still sore sometimes, but at least it's healed and it shouldn't impede me this winter.

I'm thankful for 2 healthy children. For a husband who loves me. A dog who's a wonderful companion. An extended family who care about us. That I'm (mostly) healthy. Roof over my head, food on the table, heat in the cold winter months... indoor plumbing ... you know, all that good stuff. :D

Things I'm thankful for:
  1. The tree that fell on our house didn't cause more damage
  2. The hubby I waited 33 years for loves skiing and biking as much as I do and is always buying me new gear :becky:
  3. The crash I had today didn't do any permamnent damage as far as I can tell (just a flat lip, bruised chin, stiff neck, and popped bicep tendon - I think) . I fell off the left side of this, almost at the end! I think, besides pads, a full-faced helmet might be on the christmas list!
  4. Our family and kids are healthy and happy, on the whole.
  5. I have some incredible and inspiring friends and acquaintances (including all the Divas!).
  6. I try never to forget even the very basics (because it could be, and has been worse): I have people I love and who love me, my health (when I'm not doing stupid stuff), a place to live, and a job!
