The summer fun photo thread

Mont St Saveur, under their Mont Avila header did a summer camp for freestyle kids this weekend. They manage to "farm" snow so that campers could get onto the features in a snow park. Good for them, but I'm sure it was closer to +30C than -30... Touted as the "only" summer camp in the east....Where they hid the snow I don't know..

I've noticed that pile of snow at Avila and wondered what they were going to do with it. It looked pretty grungy!

We just spent 4 days on Orcas Island, one of my favorite places on earth. I always look at real estate magazines when there and pine for a place--it just has that feeling, for me, of instant happiness and relaxation, plus the food is really good, but my husband reminds me that there is no skiing there, and he's right. No point in getting a vacation place you'd only want to use May-October. But I just love it. Clearly we need 2 vacation places, one for skiing and one on Orcas.

I just remembered that's what Warren Miller does. Lives on Orcas in warmer months then Yellowstone Club in the winter. Sigh.

Before I dropped off my daughter at summer camp in the NC mountains, we spent a couple days enjoying the area. First stop was Chimney Rock State Park, which includes a 404 ft waterfall in addition to the cliffs. Can take an elevator to the base of Chimney Rock instead of climbing 400-some steps. We did the 330 steps from there to the highest point called Exclamation Point at 2480 ft.

The next morning we did the zipline course above the Green River. The Gorge is unusual on the east coast because they are using ZipStop, so no manual braking is required. Some hand over hand is required to get to the platform after you stop. It's a tree canopy course with a couple lines that are 1000 ft, with total vertical of 1100 from top to bottom. The course zigzags down the mountain. Apparently top speed is around 30 mph. But I don't think lightweights get going quite that fast. Great fun!

Full body harness means a comfortable ride, plus "handlebars" make it easier to keep from twisting. Feels much faster if looking in the direction of travel instead of the view of the gorge.

Sunday worship at Calvary by the Sea Lutheran - blowing pu wehe (conch) as the call to worship. Sanctuary is 30 feet from the water.

Shave ice!! At Uncle Clay's House of Pure Aloha.

I do love Hawai'i - at least outside of Waikiki that is.

The Church building is just beautiful from what you have shared in the photo. Nothing like a view of an ocean or a snow-capped mountain during a worship service!

Yes, it is koa-framed windows looking out onto Maunalua Bay. The running joke is when the whales are around and breaching, the pastor might just skip ahead to the benediction, because it's hard to compete with something that size!

I ended up going on the backpacking trip in the north-central Cascades I mentioned in Dawning Chorus, but instead of doing the whole 80 miles--I didn't want to be gone/out of cell phone range with my dog doing so poorly--I did 48, going in 2 days with my husband and SIL and then out 2 days by myself. Somehow I'd never backpacked alone but I was very content doing that. Especially since my husband and SIL were very "let's hike from dawn until dusk!" and while I'm willing to put in the miles, I also want to do side trips, look at views, lay on my stomach in a meadow and watch for bears, etc. My SIL from Iowa who had never even been on a day hike said, on the second day, that she thought she liked hiking better than skiing. I met a dozen or so Pacific Crest Trail through hikers each day as they were wrapping up--they only had a week or so to go before Canada. Talk about no downtime, though--they really do go dawn and in many cases into the dark, barely stopping to eat or look at the view.
