Tested: K2 One Luv * Purchased: Dynastar Exclusive Legend

I consider myself an intermediate skier with plenty of room for improvement, since I’ve been off skis for about 6 years. I’ve skied on straight Rossignol Slaloms in size 178. I’m 5’4, 125 lbs. After years of being off skis, I don’t like my super long Rossignols anymore. I feel that I have to work way too hard to maneuver them and they’re too fast for enjoyment. What was I thinking when I bought them 10 years ago? They are LONG! :fear:

On Saturday, I tested the K2 One Luv skis in size 156 and had a blast but later decided that they are too easy for me! After taking 6 years off from skiing, the One Luv's gave me enough courage to rip down a black diamond and I felt rather confident. I did start out on easier blues and my first thought was, “These are rather slow and boring!” It has crossed my mind that perhaps the skis were not freshly waxed and I forgot to ask the ski shop about that later. I loved how easy and effortlessly I was able to turn - bam, bam, turn after turn, left, right, left, right, I had a blast! On occasion, I enjoy a stretch of just cruising and these skis did not allow me to do that without thinking that I was going to fall! I was going pretty fast, straight down on a rather mellow slope when I felt terrible chatter! My left leg bounced from underneath me with such force, I'm amazed I did not fall! This happened on a few occasions and after that, I simply refrained from going straight. Perhaps there was something wrong with the binding, I just don't know; however, I had no issues carving and being aggressive - it seems that the skis just do not like to be taken lightly, they need a beating and they need to be held down. At the end of the day, I decided that if I were given a free pair of One Luvs, I would take them out from time to time, but it's not a pair of skis I would commit to. :decision:

On Sunday, I purchased the Dynastar Exclusive Legend skis in size 158 (without prior testing) and my first impression was, “Wow, these are rather lively!” I was able to ski for just a couple of hours that day and I remained on the blue slopes to get to know the skis better. They certainly have a very different feel to them than the One Luvs. I feel that I need to practice a bit before I muster up the courage to rip down a black diamond. The Exclusive Legends feel flexible, soft, ready to be taken on. I was able to carve the turns, though I feel that these skis need to be approached in a different manner than the One Luvs – it’s probably my technique that is off. After all, it was just the second day in my life on shorter, wider skis. I’m happy with my purchase because I feel that I have plenty of practicing to do before I master these skis – IF I ever do, LOL. I guess I forgot to mention how light these are – WOW. Light and pretty fast and stable! I’ll have to put in more hours before I’m able to give more details but so far so good! These puppies have given me the impression that they have lots of fun in store for me and will not let me down. We’ll see! I did not want to demo a bunch of skis due to $, hence my purchase based on reviews and recommendations from ski shops.

One Luvs I tested were 156; my Exclusive Legends are 158. The 2 cm difference is non-existent. Standing tall next to each other, the skis appear to be the same length.

Congratulations! Looks like we have another Diva Dynastar Devotee!

I too bought Legends (and Fluids) without demoing them, just based on recommendations. I've been more than happy with both. No doubt about it, the Legends are a great ski.

Just an observation - any negatives about the One Luv, you blame on the ski, but with the Legend you blame your technique?

I'm the exact opposite. I own the One Luv but only demo-ed the Legend.

So my conclusion is equally predictable. All the negative about the One Luv, it's due to my poor technique. But with the Legend, it's the ski.

Dynastar Dilemma?

I have been impatiently waiting for my Dynastar Legends to arrive--I have been unable to think or do basically anything else while waiting for them!! This is the first pair of skis I have ever owned, having only rented in the past, so I am stoked! But I didn't exactly feel the love  here after I made my selection. I know Dynastar isn't as popular as Volkl here, but I'm curious as to the reasons. Raised heel? Too light? Softer feel? Personal preference? Feel free to PM me if you aren't comfortable chiming in on this thread. :grouphug: It won't dampen my enthusiasm for my skis, but it will give me something to consider when I try them out. I too, was not able to demo anything in my neck of the woods, had a serendipitous ebay experience, and decided to buy used and "demo" them for the whole next year. (I also read the glowing reviews on Ski Press for 2009. The Legend was a standout, the highest in the ratings for women's all-mountain skis.) Anyway, your feedback would be appreciated, and may help me and my fellow Dynastar Diva adapt to our skis!

You got me! :bag: Honestly, the only negative thing I noticed about the One Luvs was the chatter, otherwise I really did have a great time on them. The Legends seem like they may be too advanced for me at the moment and I have the opportunity to grow into them, whereas the One Luvs seemed too little of skis for me and they make me feel like I don't know how to ski them, therefore my technique requires practice.

I don’t think there’s any “blame” going on here at all, FWIW.
Having had the terrific opportunity to demo these (although the K2's were the Lotta Luv) back-to-back late last Feb, here is my opinion on the difference:
K2 is a damper, heavier ski. It still charges like the dickens (and likes speed, at least it preferred it with me) when pointed, but it does not have the same level of liveliness as the Dynastars.
Dynastar EL is a rebounding ski, with a slightly shorter turning radius. If you load it, it will respond. Quickly. Which one prefers is clearly an individual choice, but anyone used to a damper ski will have to make some changes when climbing onto a lively, light one.
The K2's were 160; Dynastars were 158.
I’ve owned both brands.
Ultimately, I’d have either ski in a heart beat and sought out deals on both.
The deal came through on the Dynastar, which was my preferred ski, by a hair. At my low-ish weight, I felt they were better suited to me and my skiing style and wouldn’t tire my legs as easily. They were more maneuverable for me at lower speeds than the K2 Lotta.

No, nothing to do with blame, I'm just interested in the process of how people demo skis and decide that a certain ski is the right one.

I think it's mostly about finding the ski that suits your style, whatever that it is, that's why they make so many different types of ski, because everyone likes something slightly different. For me it has to be love at first run, it has to feel right from the start.

Totally for me as well. Difference: some are well-adapted to the new skiing and equipment, so it's just a different "feel." Others have been away from the sport and/or are coming off of very different equipment (straight skis, etc)....and many adaptations are required right out of the gate.

Recalling my first chairlift exit on a very shaped ski: got off, made the turn, overturned it to almost 180 degrees! Had a huge chuckle off that maneuver and quickly learned how little effort turning required!

As another Dynastar Legend Lover I hope you have a blast on your new skis. It's definitely an individual choice but I agree that you have to feel the right vibe. It has to feel like the ski is on your wavelength and maybe even smarter than you -- and ready to teach you something! My Dynastars are like a good friend that skis better than me and reminds me of proper technique as we ski along together. I ski on the unisex Dynastar Legend 8000 by the way. WHOLE LOTTA SKI and I love them.

ENJOY and welcome to the DIVA DYNASTAR DEVOTEE group of skier friends! :grouphug:

Wooo :yahoo: was it fun!!! Goodness, these skis are AWESOME! We've made good friends! I was out for 6 hours today, tearing up the slopes! I have yet to find these puppies' speed limit, boy they GO FAST! Light as a feather and fast! Easy to turn, flexible, gripping the ice, I have absolutely no complaints! They plow through crud and float on deeper snow, I can't think of anything that these awesome skis cannot do! I must say, the first hour we were just getting to know each other, I proceeded cautiously and even bit it quite good -- that was the only time I fell. After that, I just let it go, I didn't hold back. The Exclusive Legends sure like to be pushed and they reward quite nicely! Once I figured out how to maneuver them, they became MINE! Fun fun fun!!! Can't wait to go out tomorrow again! Wooo hooo!!!

:becky: Bingo. Still searching for same. Fore-aft foot movements are very quickly transmitted. Found this was the way to completely alleviate any chatter. Experimented with this quite a bit this past weekend.

Welcome to "The Club!!" We're a smaller group compared to some of the other much-loved skis here....but think of this way: these skis are half the price (usually) of the "other" ski (I have a pair of E-Legends and E-Legend Powders, WITH bindings, that, together, cost less than a pair of unmounted Volkl Auras :becky:) -- think of all that saved $$, not to mention our ear-to-ear grins! :yahoo:

If you were to see me yesterday, I sang to myself on the lift and had a big smile on my face, I truly had a blast! Definitely got my money's worth. I love being in this club, woohoo! :bounce:

Another EL lover here! I bought them on recommendations without testing and just love them. They've been a fantastic one-ski quiver for me to date (although I added two pair this season because I'm a gear addict, lol).

Glad you're enjoying them, sweetnsnooty!

Acadia - I noted your growing quiver  and just was wondering if you'd had the chance to put the Legends into some serious snow depth yet. Mine got inaugurated, purely by accident, on 1/18, when we went up expecting to see 8-10", 12" tops - maybe - and it wound up being 18-24" I actually had the wider boards in the car but was too lazy to shuttle bus back to parking, so I thought I'd just try the Legends in it. We were all on somewhat narrow skis, mine being the narrowest. BKH319 was on her AT/Shuksan set-up (around 80, I think), DH was on 78, Legends 75.

Had my doubts, but....holy crow! Floated! It all tracked out pretty fast, leaving the usual, but the stuff was so absurdly light, it was a non-issue. Best eastern pow day ever. Was a serendipitous litmus test for the boards, for sure. You'll have some serious use overlap between these and the Auras (unless you're planning on a lot of western days?) - the advantage being that if it's slick or scraped beneath/around powder, the Auras won't be (as) happy. The Legends will take it ON.
