Ski Diva Extraordinaire
Do you remember your first time skiing?

Are your memories like mine? As vivid as a sunset on the water and as fading as the twilight? Images as fresh as the dew on grassy riverbanks or merely the shadow of a spectre of a whisper from long ago?

Do you remember? Or is the memory swept away by the press of new snow and sweet scent of another perfume, the ring of another voice?

When you cast your mind to memory are those first moments like a hurricane - full of power and passion leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of your soul?

Were you poised; legs like two cannon waiting to unload, begging to be released?

Or was it like the gentle touch of lovers' hands - whispering fingers caressing wind-chapped skin?

Tell us all about your first time.

I'm curious.

I was 5 years old and Mom, Dad and I went to visit freinds in Barrie Ontario. This was the ski place in Ontario in the early 60's. Uncle Bob strapped these boards onto my snow boots and showed me how to hold onto the rope tow. At the top I let go and grabbed the tree at the top. (no poles back then) and pulled myself around the tree. Sat down on the skis and let go. Lessons, they weren't even thought of. Well 20 some years later the first person after Mom and Dad that got the call that I was a CSIA 2, was Uncle Bob. I think he was more proud than me or my parents. He's now 80 something and still skiing. After that they started a ski club/hill locally and we did the right thing with lessons etc.

Thought of "other" first times too!!!

Saw this thread title and thought...

Is AQ reading a few too many romance novels these days, hmmmm??? You need to go skiing...

But why not, I'll bite. BTW, we've had a similar forum - it's back in the archives somewhere.
I was a bored urban rat. Joined up with this tour group to go skiing one weeknight a week for 7 weeks. Price included bus, lift ticket, rentals. Why the heck not, could be fun.
How about: was a freakin' BLAST!
And I wasn't altogether half bad!
Had an adorable ski instructor (6 of us in class, never-evers).
Decided to keep him.
He's still adorable, and we're still skiing.
The End.

Not too many romance novels (hate romance novels) - just bored tonight. Sprained/twisted my ankle again and needed some distraction.

OW. Feel better soon!! Really soon!

The first place I skied was at Copper Mountain ... I was 4. I think it was the first year Copper opened, maybe the second. It was in the Green Acres part of the mountain. I don't remember much, except seeing a tree in the middle of the run and falling so I wouldn't hit it. (Not that I was anywhere near it ... just nervous, I think.)

No big deal, except that when we bought our condo 2 years ago, we bought right at the bottom of that little bunny hill, and I ski it every time I end the day. I ski right past the tree that I was scared of (it's right in the middle of the run).

My father and stepmother to my sister and I skiing for the first time- I think I was about 9 or so. I'm pretty sure we went to Nashoba. All I remember is that they took us on the bunny hill. No lesson, just a rope tow , and an old fashoned one at that- no handles, just a big fat rope. I can still remember how everyone was falling and piling up on each other. I don't know if I ever made it to the top and actually had a chance to try to ski

With this as my first skiing memory, I'm surprised that I wanted to continue.

I hope you are feeling better soon. How did you hurt your ankle? Distractions abound here... have fun!

Ankle? Back in December DH and were walking to the car and I hit some ice (in high-heeled boots, of course) and went over on the bone. Did the old RICE and stayed off it for a couple days. It has been bothering me off and on since.

I was a little concerned because I am prone to stress fractures - (worst was having 2nd, 3rd and 4th metatarsals of both feet with stress fractures!).

A few weeks ago (before my custom orthotics and hours working on my boots) I hit a lump of crud and lifted up in my boot and crashed down - re-injured.

Yesterday, I took my dog, Storm

out for a run - misjudged some ice and went over hard again.

Darned ice - it's a conspiracy!

That story warms my heart.

The bunny hill I learned on is no longer a bunny hill. It is a terrain park now.

I was 18 when I learned to ski. My boyfriend, now husband taught me, which makes me wonder how we ever survived it.
He taught me the basic snow plow, I had the usual panic attacks...............yada yada.......he and his buddies left me alone to 'get a clue'.

It was dark(night skiing) I was scared, but more than anything I couldn't chicken out because I didn't want to be the girlfriend that wouldn't do it.
I fell in love with skiing and have taken it to a level my husband couldn't imagine, way back then.

When it was time to go from the bunny hill to the blue Runs, I remember his buddy saying, "Skiing is like two trackin'. You turn to slow, don't slow to turn! Keep up, we're not waiting for you at the chair"

It seems like "love at first slide" is almost universal.

For me, it sure was NOT love -- It was nasty enough for me that I have NO idea why I ever went back.

I sure am glad I did!

I didn't learn to ski until my 20's. My husband and his friend took me to the local hill. They told me I didn't need a lesson because I was athletic. Needless to say, I went screaming straight down the hill, with their voices up above me, yelling, "Turn!"

And I thought, "Turn? How do I turn?" The hill looked so big.

I ended up in a heap, laughing, at the bottom of the run. I then immediately went to the ski school and booked a lesson!

Last week, 14 years later, I learned to ski switch on that same bunny slope. I hadn't been on it since I learned to ski. It's a dinky little hill now. Funny how it looked so big before.

The first time I skied was with my father and sister when I was around 10 or 11 (almost 26 now). We went to a trip to Mount Snow and I skied the bunny hill....At first I felt confident, as I was able to ski down pretty well...My problem was always stopping. To stop...I'd just fall... I fell through a plastic fence with my skis jetting out of the holes, I'd fall to stop myself, etc. We then went to Killington in April...It was warm and I was again skiing a bunny hill... I wore my mom's old ski outfit...ALL WHITE (lol)... I couldn't stop and fell directly into a huge puddle of mud!

After that, I thought skiing was not for me but the next year we went to Shawnee PA for a day--I took a lesson and finally learned to stop! We then went to a few resorts in NJ for practice for our week-long trip to Stratton... That is where I finally felt comfortable on skis and my obsession started. Because of that, Stratton will always hold a special place in my skier's heart ;)

So are you in Union Creek? We were at The Cirque last weekend, and I skied those bunny slopes on the way home.
:D

It's funny you post this topic. I recently found an old picture from my first ski trip. I was in junior high (I lived in NYC) and a friend's parents let her invite a few of us up to their house near Hunter Mountain for the weekend. The picture was of us in her front yard "trying out" our rentals on what little snow was there.

I remember picking it up quickly, and even getting aggressive and having a lot of fun with my girlfriends. I also remember skiing in jeans! Can you even imagine now? LOL

The first time I skied I was, I think, if memory serves, nine (26 long years ago). My father had a business trip to CO and wanted to start up skiing again after a long hiatus. My mom hates heights and speed and cold, so not much skiing for a few years for my dad. Well, a little XC, as we lived in a rural area in MI, and it was easy to get out and explore on XC skis. But no alpine.

He brought me with him on his business trip, and we went to Keystone after his meetings. I had a full day beginner lesson, and the next day he took me up the mountain to do the long, green road that is Schoolmarm. I remember very clearly starting out strong and then getting tired and a little scared and having a meltdown as only 9-15yo girls can have meltdowns. But eventually I made it to the bottom, and was hooked for life. Even when hooked meant years of skiing bulldozed, icy bumps in the freezing cold at night, in jeans and a bandana, in southern Michigan.
:D

Actually, Union Creek isn't that old. It was over at the bottom of Pitchfork/Green Acres -- aka C lift. REALLY a bunny hill. Initially it was a poma (the poma is still there, and an ancient lift). Here's a trail map from that year:
