Not conditions, but wanted to note a special event day at Taos on March 7. There will be free tours covering different aspects of the history of TSV. Rick Richards wrote the book Ski Pioneers: Ernie Blake, His Friends and the Making of Taos Ski Valley (published 1992) about the founding and development of TSV. Richards had the chance to do in depth interviews of not only Ernie Blake but also many others who were around from the start. Peter Blake is one of the sons of Ernie Blake. Peter has been an instructor at TSV for a while.

In the Spirit of FUN on the afternoon of March 7th, with a few local celebrities from our Taos SnowSports School, we offer individually crafted tours looking at different perspectives of Taos Ski Valley History. Tours start at 1:30 pm at the base of 1 and run approx. an hour on green and blue terrain. These tours are FREE, to reserve your spot R.S.V.P. [email protected]. Friends, families, employees, and locals are welcome.

1. “Ski Pioneers, Ernie Blake, His Friends and the Making of Taos Ski Valley”
Guides: Rick Richards with good friend Ken Gallard

Ken is responsible for many of the photos in Ski Pioneers and was very instrumental in helping put the book together. Rick and Ken have been fixtures of TSV for decades. They will tell some stories and talk of how the book came to be, how it was put together and what an honor it was and is to be a part of this whole gig. They will answer questions, maybe tell a few tales that aren't in "Ski Pioneers” and have fun skiing the mountain together as Ernie intended us to. We’ll look forward to seeing you there.

2. “The Evolution of Our Ski Terrain, and how it has Unfolded Over the Years”
Guide: Henry Hornberger

It’s a story! Come learn about all the choices that have gone into the evolution of skiing at Taos Ski Valley. As much as the natural terrain has defined our skiing, there were decisions regarding why runs were cut in certain areas and given certain names. There was also the adventure of creating and maintaining our terrain. Come join, Henry (one of our local treasures) for a look at Taos Ski Valley that you may not have considered before.

3. "The History of Taos Ski Valley with Peter Blake"
Guide: Peter Blake

Come Ski with Peter Blake and learn first hand about the family who founded our resort and the mountain that forms our great ski resort. Peter’s life experience like many, take him from the mountain to many other parts of the country, with skiing always being a part of his life.. It is this multi-faceted love of Taos that has built our community. This will be a real treat don’t miss it!

Taos is closing early due to COVID-19. Last day will be March 22. Below is the email that was sent out today.

March 13, 2020
Dear Taos Ski Valley Skiers & Riders,
The health and wellbeing of our staff, our small rural community, and our guests is of the utmost importance to Taos Ski Valley. Taos is supporting the recent actions taken by the State of New Mexico and is implementing a proactive approach to help mitigate COVID-19.
After much deliberation and considering many stakeholder interests, we have decided to modify our scheduled closing date to Sunday, March 22nd. This will include The Blake at Taos Ski Valley, and the Taos Air service from Texas and California. All remaining events, including the World Pro Ski Tour World Championships have been canceled.
Our values compel us to make business decisions that are equitable for all. While we are planning this step proactively to help mitigate the potential spread of the virus, we recognize this plan will impact our staff, guests, and many local small businesses, and we do not take this decision lightly.
This timing enables visitors to reschedule their planned trips or to cancel for a full refund. It also allows our staff to wind down duties, and local small businesses to plan for the impact they will experience. Of course, this is a rapidly changing situation in New Mexico and around the world, and we will continue monitoring developments closely.
If you have booked a visit after March 22nd we will be processing a full refund for those dates during the coming weeks. Any reservations between now and March 22nd will stay intact, however, if you would prefer to differ your visit to next season or request a refund please reach out to our reservations specialist team so they may assist with your request. Visit skitaos.com for full details.
Sincerely,
David Norden
Taos Ski Valley CEO

My friends from Taos are in panic mode right now because they heard there are 4 suspected cases at their local hospital awaiting test results. It’d be wise to close the ski resort early if any of these come back positive.

NM has 10 presumptive cases as of March 13. The governor declared a public health emergency two days ago. Did they really think it wasn't coming? Or for that matter, wasn't already around given that there are plenty of people who live in Taos and travel often.

Having evidence of COVID-19 is a reason to push social distancing more, and stop large gatherings. But it isn't a reason to panic when the testing reveals cases well before there is a death or people with severe symptoms. It's still true that 80% of people who become infected have minor symptoms. The issue when testing is delayed is that people minor symptoms are more likely to cause issues for other people because they are contagious and don't realize it. Having a death be the first detected case is more of a reason to be more concerned.
