Taos 2019-20, conditions and open terrain

Since I'm returning to Taos in February with friends, I'm already watching the weather in the NM mountains. It's snowed a few times at TSV but hasn't stayed cold enough to start building any sort of base. That's supposed to change by late October.

According to the Ikon Open/Close webpage, Taos plans to open on Nov. 28, 2019. The TSV website has switched into winter mode.

For Divas with enough posts, there are Meet On The Hill (MOTH) threads by Divas who are set to do a Ski Week this season.

If you are curious about last season, here's the thread:

Hope the cold front sticks around. TSV has plenty of snowmaking for the core groomers. The sooner they can start building a base, the better.

It's snowing hard at TSV right now. The forecast for today on OpenSnow ended up 4-8 inches as of this morning. Forecasts more than a few days in advance are always likely to change.

Great fun to play with the controls on the webcams. Going to be plenty cold for the next week if TSV wants to get started with building the base on the core groomers.

Warmed up a bit too much for daytime snowmaking today. But it will cold enough every night for the foreseeable future.

In addition to the usual webcams for the base and slopes, there is a webcam for the construction zone for the new condo building. Found that Le Sky Mastery has moved down towards Lift 1 and across the road. It's in a building on the road that leads to the Powderhorn condos.

Their new location is circled in red. It was a ski/snowboard shop before but I don’t remember the name.

Looks like there are new webcams at TSV. Seem to be three live feeds, plus the cameras that can be User controlled. Too soon to see much white, but will be fun in another month or so.

It's snowing heavily at TSV today! Good day to watch the webcams. :snow:

Yesterday’s storm missed Taos. Glad to see it is finally snowing! Years ago we talked about snow in feet...now I am happy with just a few inches...

My sense of TSV is that having big dumps of snow has never been that common. That's one reason it's been known for big bumps even though there were relatively few skiers compared to destination resorts that are easier to reach. When it snows a lot or fairly regularly, the bumps never have a chance to grow into bumps big enough to be described as the size of a VW Bug.

In Feb 2017 there had been lots of big snowstorms before we arrived. The regulars were noting that the bumps on Kachina Peak were pretty small compared to most seasons. That made sense to me because skiing down didn't seem that difficult, except for the high altitude.

Definitely looks different than 24 hours ago when looking at the webcams. The storm was a good one to help get coverage for opening day. The official total being reported is 19 inches. It will be plenty cold enough for daytime snowmaking to build base on the core groomers before Thanksgiving. Get better manmade snow under about 25 degrees, assuming low humidity.

Not exactly conditions, but useful info for anyone headed to Taos this season. Was posted in a MOTH thread that is in a Divas Only section.

Minor changes at the base: shuttle stop and ticket window has moved. They are redirecting foot traffic to the base via the stairs by The Blake because of the construction. There are more day lockers, added cubby shelves and Coldsmoke photography in the same area = much less space to get ready. Not sure where Ikon pass office is since the building is gone - best to find out before you come up. Season pass office still in the large tent. No Taos tickets at Costco yet.

It was confusing last season to have a separate Ikon desk since the season pass office could deal with them.
