Sun Glare

The Labor Day thread got me thinking of my to do/solve list.

Anyone use a chairlift that is directly in front of the sun? I use one a lot and the burning glare is a problem.

Would a visor fly off when skiing? I don't care about looking like a dork. I really need to figure out how to block the sun out of my eyes while on the lift. Sometimes I hold my hand in front of my eyes the whole ride up. I have dark goggles and they are not enough. Any ideas?

Seriously, would a cap with a brim fly off when skiing?

sounds annoying

I would look for a helmet that has a pre-molded visor as opposed to the flimsy plastic screw on types. You know what will happen to that thing if you happen to fall on it...I don't even want to think about it.
I used to have an attachable visor on my kayaking helmet. I think KAVU made it, it was pretty much a baseball cap visor that velcroed on to the helmet, probably a little safer than the plastic and it as I remember stayed put pretty well, even through all the maytagging I used to do. That was before they incorporated the visor into the helmet as an all in one, but an option if you are in love with the helmet you have now. :blah:

Ah, I must admit to wearing just a ski hat. I guess I'm looking for hat-friendly ideas.

I was not aware that helmets come with visors. Good to know!

I suspected as much, which is why I introduced the helmet idea. Everyone should have a helmet. No exceptions. Sorry. I have skied for 35 years and always was kind of iffy about helmets. I owned one because one class required it and after spending all that money I felt I had to get my money's worth out of it, but I always said if it was a fine spring day I'd take it off. I'm alive today because I didn't.

If someone who has been skiing as long as I have is on a GREEN trail with no crowds and good visibility and still ended up slamming into the trees, then so can you.

I swear by helmets too. Started skiing in late '04, bought a helmet before I started, have only skied once without it (first season) and fell that day. Fortunately I didn't injure myself. My husband and our 4 kids ski and ride with helmets and have since they started in late '05. My husband has worked in ER and other hospital settings for a decade, incuding 3 1/2 years at a rehab hospital. Head injuries are very common and can be tremendous life setbacks.

Now, about those goggles, maybe you need a pair of goggles that deal with the sun better. Smith Anthem goggles are good for women's faces as they are smaller than typical goggles, and I use the platinum lens for bluebird days. I keep my flatlight (sensor lens) goggles in my boot bag at the lodge, and if I'm out West where I won't be hitting the lodge for awhile, I keep the other set in my backpack. I think Smith makes a polarized goggle as well. https://www.smithoptics.com/Anthem_11_465.html

Mmm, thinking about a sunny morning being carried over fresh snow.... Now that's a dream come true!

Re: visor or hat flying off while skiing, the answer is yes. Air gets under the brim and the hats just fly off; one way to not completely lose the hat is get one of those string things that have clips on both ends, to attach to the cap and the collar of the jacket. Hat will still fly off, but it won't be lost.
