Summer Fun

I'm over the what the hell do I do with myself hump and now I'm knee deep into summer stuff. We've been to the UK, busy with farmers markets, gardening, backyard mimosaing and trying to cram as many live shows into our schedule as I can.

Off to see Third Eye Blind tonight. Hopefully DH can get out of work in time but I'll be there regardless.

Can't believe it's been 3 and 1/2 months since I've been on skis. Seems like yesterday. I'm excited it's almost August. The count down to pre season football has begun.

What's everyone up to this summer, hopefully some fun.

Palisade peaches fresh from the farmer's market. One "ready to eat" and a few more that need to ripen. Check them in their paper bag every day to see when they're nommable. Eat over the sink while the juices roll down your chin.

With apologies to William Carlos Williams (original, regarding plums: https://www.poets.org/poetsorg/poem/just-say )

This Is Just To Say

I have eaten
the peaches
that were on
the counter

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so juicy

Interesting. Just changing those couple of words makes it not quite as good as the original. IMO. I guess there's a reason he's a famous poet ... that poem is one of my favorites, right next to one my dad heard on NPR, ostensibly by Karen Shepherd's dog Birch:

You gonna eat that?
You gonna eat that?
You gonna eat that?
I'll eat that.

(Apparently I am a big fan of food-based poems)

Great pic, SD! I'd love to bike there, too!

My off season always begins with "planting the farm", my good sized veggie garden. Then I plant the flowers. I usually swim laps daily from April-October, dropping down to 2-4 days/week in ski season. I usually bike with a ride organized by the city for lunch hours, but my street was under heavy construction from last October until well into June while they replaced 100 year old water lines. By then it was 100 degrees and often storming daily. I hope I can resume that soon. The end of June record setting flooding hit much of the state of West Virginia and Red Cross deployed me to work that operation; I just got home this week. My "crops" are certainly the "worse for wear", er the 100 degree days and I fear the zukes, yellow squash and cherry tomatoes are about done for the season. I fed everything else yesterday and hope their production will rise again.
My family will soon have its 84th reunion and I'll visit various cousins and friends going to and from. Late summer I return to Vermont to canoe, kayak, light biking and hiking and a little horseback riding with another diva. So, yes, I enjoy each part of the year for what it has to offer. May all hurricanes ~not~ grow up!

The song Peaches by the Presidents of the United States just popped into my head

I need to get more into biking. Our problem is storage. DH has this old Canondale bike in the back yard that he thinks is trashed but I think I could take it to a bike shop and have them fix it up a little, enough for me to ride. I miss my bike paths in California. Here it's quite treacherous to ride around town, I prefer designated riding/walking/hiking areas, etc.

I've always wanted to get to Maine. Come summer I try to cram so much in and don't think we're getting to Maine this summer.

Headed to see Disturbed tonight, so very excited. This is their first tour since their hiatus. Staying overnight in Windsor Locks and then headed up to Vermont for the weekend.

That's an excellent new verb.

Thank you. I began using it last summer . Unfortunately we are out and about many weekends so it's not something I get to partake in all the time.

Other uses are "I mimosa" when I can

Aaaand I found myself singing that last night.

In a crossover with the gardening thread, my summer fun is of the low-key variety this season - so I'm ultra excited about setting up the drip system for my fall veggies, which I've never done before. I did some research and ordered some stuff that should arrive Wednesday. Potential upside/downside: I'll now understand the sprinkler system better, which means I won't be able to just abdicate all sprinkler work to DH ....

We saw The Presidents of the United States of America a couple years ago at the casino and what a fun show that was.

Nothing wrong with low key summer fun. Your drip system sounds fantastic. I will live vicariously though you, not sure fall veggies are an option here but I could be wrong. Sounds like you are going to have a great system going and very empowering that you have a better handle on how it all works.

I guess it depends on the timing of the first frost. We have a lot of sun here all the time, which I'm sure helps.
