Summer 2020 activities at ski resorts

Looks like there will not be any season passes in the typical sense.
Turns out the the decision by Thredbo to not have season passes is not a general approach for Australia. Mt Buller will have season passes.

Still have to wait until mid-June to see what the VR resorts (Perisher, Falls, Hotham) plan to do to restrict the number of people on the slopes.

For those interested in learning a bit more about why Thredbo in Australia decided to refund all season passes and only have advance purchase day tickets, check out the article below. Recently the day ticket prices were released. It's a complicated system that's based on date, day of week, holiday/non-holiday, and whether or not someone had paid for a 2020-21 season pass. There are discounts that kick in after set number of days. For less busy day, a season pass holder could be paying 40% of the rack rate if they've been skiing a lot.

Details for the 3 resorts owned by Vail Resorts will be released next week. Mt. Buller is going to use season passes in some fashion.

I would think that Boyne Resorts is happy that Maine is making it much easier to get tested, including for out-of-state visitors. No symptoms or referral from a doctor will be required for people who feel they are at higher risk of having been exposed. Goal is to quadruple testing capacity by July.

Maine is also expanding contact tracing staffing and capabilities. Test & Trace currently rates Maine low for contact tracing and high for testing. Sounds like in a few weeks ME could join VT in having a 5/6 grade.

Governor quadrupling COVID-19 testing capacity, advances swab-and-send site development, makes testing available to more Mainers

" . . .
Making Testing Available to More People in Maine:
DHHS is issuing a standing order allowing most people in Maine with elevated risk to get a COVID-19 test without the need for a separate order from a health care provider.

This means individuals can seek testing even if they don't have a primary care provider or a written order from a clinician if they face a higher risk of exposure, with or without experiencing symptoms. This could include: health care workers and first responders, seasonal and migrant farm workers, people experiencing homelessness, visitors from other states with a higher prevalence of the virus, and employees of congregate living facilities such as nursing homes, lodging establishments, grocery stores and other businesses who have direct, daily contact with the public."

New Hampshire hotels have re-opened. Out-of-state visitors have to sign saying that they stayed home for 14 days before entering NH.

The Mount Washington Hotel is re-opening on June 15. Loon announced that summer activities like mountain biking would open on July 3. Waterville Valley lodging is open.

Sugarbush is slowly opening up for summer activities. The golf course is open. Lodging reservations after June 15 are being accepted. However an earlier date of June 27 for other summer activities is being pushed back.

Here are the golf guidelines, which are probably becoming somewhat standard. Bold added to highlight who doesn't need to self-quarantine. County level statistics are clearly becoming more important to account for the variability across the region.

The Sugarbush Resort Golf Club is open and excited to welcome back guests. While the course and practice facility are open, our Clubhouse, Locker Room, Hogan’s Pub, Pro Shop, and Driving Range will remain closed until further notice.
Golf Safety Practices:
Tee times must be made, and paid for with a credit card, in advance, by phone or online. NO walk-up tee times! Please call 802-583-6725 or book online.
Please do not arrive at the course more than 10 minutes prior to your tee time.
Tee times will be spaced in 15 minute increments, golfers are expected to maintain a personal space barrier of 6 feet both within their group and other groups.
Scorecards and golf tees will NOT be available. You must bring your own tees or purchase bagged tees from the golf shop. Free smartphone apps like USwing and mScorecard are great for scorekeeping. Scores can be posted online at www.ghin.com or by using the GHIN App on smartphones.
Face coverings will be required when interacting with employees, other guests, or in the area of clubhouse and parking lot.
Any golfer living in a non-quarantine county across New England and New York is now permitted to play golf in the state of Vermont and participate in VGA events. That means counties that have less than 400 active cases of COVID-19 per one million residents may enter the state for leisure travel without quarantining.
Walking is encouraged, but golf carts are available. Two bags may go in a cart per usual but only one golfer may ride a cart at a time unless they are members of the same household. Golf carts will be sanitized between uses.
There will be no touch points on the golf course (ball washers, rakes, water coolers, etc.) Please note that our Tee Sentry notification system will not be in use for this reason, so use caution when hitting blind tee shots.
Check-in will occur through the shop window off of the front porch, please follow signage to check-in area.
Bottled Water, Soda, Beer, and Snacks will be available to purchase at Check-In.
Limited items will be available for purchase from the Pro Shop, such as golf balls, gloves, and bagged golf tees. Please order in advance when making tee time.
Golf carts will be self-serve and will be staged on the 1st hole side of Golf Course Road.
Post round cart drop off will be in designated area in the Parking Lot. Please remove all trash from carts and place in provided receptacle. This is necessary to reduce touch points for our staff.
Restroom facilities will be limited to portable toilets located outside of the Clubhouse, so please plan accordingly. There will be no portable toilets on the golf course.
Foam inserts will be placed in the cup to avoid any unnecessary touchpoints.

Jay Peak in northern VT is trying something new to get people to get out of their house for what could be considered a summer "staycation" at a mountain resort. They are calling it a Relocation Vacation. The idea is to get a 1BR (max 4) or 2BR (max 6) condo for a month or two, complete with a pass for the golf course and an outdoor pool. Pets are welcome for a cleaning fee. The monthly rental fees seem pretty competitive with a comparable VRBO/AirBnB rental for 4 weeks.

Saw this Jay deal recently and thought it would be extremely compelling for some, particularly those in the cities who are desperate for some fresh air and have had trouble finding a rental. The main roadblock for the time being of course will be the mandatory VT quarantine period (based on county of residence).

in Andorra (Europe) - my home mountain resort is Grandvalira. Summer offerings include mini golf, (full-sized) golf, biking, zipline, carting, canoeing, beekeeping, hiking, etc. All of the elements requiring infrastructure are closed, to open on 4 July.

https://ww2.grandvalira.com/en/activities

Last Wednesday (through Saturday) I went from France to Andorra for the first time since the shutdown in mid-March. Other than the recent opening of the border town where the French can get cheap gas, alcohol and cigarettes, the country is very quiet, as the Spanish are not yet allowed to re-enter. In any case June is a sort of low season between winter and summer. For me it was heaven. I was able to hike, mountain bike, and shop, all in peace. Regarding the coming ski season, they plan to open, with 20-50% fewer out of towners. Let's see what comes...all is unknown..

The Telluride gondola that goes between the town and the mountain has re-opened. This is the free gondola with more than one section and multiple terminals that is a form of public transportation for tourists in general, not just folks who use the slopes in the winter when lifts are running.

Okemo has summer activities open as of mid-June, starting with summer scenic chair lift rides, hiking, the mountain coaster, and disc golf. People in the same "party" can ride a lift together.

Massanutten in northern VA has been re-opening in stages, as is pretty common this month. The bike park is only open on Wed, Sat, Sun. Season passes are discounted until June 30. They are also experimenting with an "Afternoon Special" to use the trail from 2:30-5:00 for $20 for just a Trail-Use Ticket and $25 to rent a bike. What's interesting is that the Afternoon Special is only available in person. For regular tickets for Massanutten activities, online advance tickets are recommended. Not only to guarantee a ticket but also to decrease the need for standing in a ticket line.

Solitude in Utah has made the decision not to open this summer. Here's their statement:

After considering many factors, and striving to do what is best for our staff and guests during the COVID-19 pandemic, Solitude has made the difficult decision that we will not be opening for public operations during summer 2020. This means that restaurants, rentals, retail, lift-served hiking and biking, and disc golf will not be available. The Inn at Solitude and Solitude Mountain Spa will not open during summer 2020.

We reached this decision out of concern for the health of staff and guests, as well as an honest assessment of our ability to generate enough meaningful revenue to make public summer operations a success under the current circumstances.

Some private condos will be available to rent through Solitude Resort Lodging. As of now, lodging guests may use the outdoor pool, hot tubs, and gym of Club Solitude, operating with metered capacity and additional sanitization protocols to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Our lodging staff will continue to evaluate our ability to comply with health restrictions as it relates to operating Club Solitude for lodging guests.

During the coming months, we will be busy preparing for winter. We look forward to welcoming our mountain family back to Solitude under circumstances and standards that allow us all to enjoy the outdoors together safely, forging connections and inspiring discovery through once-in-a-lifetime mountain experiences.

Here in Utah, with several of our mayors and our state epidemiologist begging the governor to implement more restrictions as our case numbers continue to spike, and now suddenly we have a test kit shortage so we won't even know what's really happening... I'm glad to see some of our resorts and businesses making tough decisions to keep people safe. So kudos to Solitude.

Here's another one that's staying closed: Sunapee in New Hampshire. Here's their comment on Facebook:

To our Mount Sunapee Family, although we're eager to get back on the mountain, we have decided to wait to reopen until winter. While we will miss seeing you at the mountain this summer, we will be preparing for an amazing winter ahead of us. The gorgeous views from our summit can still be accessed by the summit hiking trail in our NH State Park. We will of course be in touch here with updates as we move forward in re-opening our resort.

Just an aside: Sunapee is part of Vail Resorts.

Okemo won't open for mountain biking this year, just the hiking, lift rides, mountain coaster, and disc golf that MarzNC mentioned above. I hear that their patrol staff is required to wear masks at all times as well as N-95s, face-shields, and gowns when treating any patient for any reason (which is higher level of precaution than the EMS service I work for). I don't know if customers are required to wear masks, but it sounds as though they are serious about risk-reduction.
