suggestions for helmets

Helmets are like boots, it needs to fit. Look for soft ears and female specific. They exist. I wear a Salomon Siam from last year. But it doesn't fit all that well. We did some major padding work to make it fit.
If I were doing it again, I probably wouldn't let the furry ears be the thing I really needed.

You may know this already, but if you're getting a new helmet, you may end up needing new goggles, too. Not all goggles are helmet compatible, so bring yours along when you helmet shop.

Be prepared to try on LOTS of helmets before you find one that fits. Unless you're racing, you'll probably want to avoid the ones that have the shell covering your ear. Look, instead for soft and even removable ear pads. If you tend to get hot, look for lots of vents, or adjustable venting systems. The reverse is true, of course, if you're always cold. If you have a very small or short head, try a junior helmet. You'll also find that each manufacturer has a different 'fit shape'....some are narrower, some are shorter front-to-back, some will sit higher on your head.

The helmet should fit down to just over your eyebrows and should cup the back of your head firmly. If you think you found one that fits, put it on your head, use both hand and try to twist it side to side. It should not move. Then try to roll it off the front or back of your head. It should pull your brow and your hair but not come off. Lastly, bend over and shake your head vigorously. If it doesn't fall off and nothing hurts yet, buy it. :D

Then, as suggested above, put your goggles on with your helmet. They should still not gap around your face and there should not be a gap between the top of the goggle frame and the bottom of the helmet. You'll also want to make sure the strap on your goggles is long enough that the goggles don't either pull away from your face or pull too tight into your face.

I love my Giro 9 helmet, and Lil has one just like it - only hers has a 'bad girl' image on the back. You'll have to get her to show it to you some time. It's a picture of a girl with pony tails who has ripped the head off of her doll. Bad, bad girl! Lil's a bad girl too! Sometimes, when she does something she knows she shouldn't do, she will even stick her tongue out at you! Imagine that! :D

I like it.. I want one! Mine has a couple of stickers on the back (after-market), a girl doing an iron-cross heli with 'ski like a girl' written on it, and a tiny Australian flag on the other side.

I found a good helmet in Boeri. I did the sneaky, cheap thing, though. Rather than spend my dollars at the ski shop for their outrageous markup, I had them fit me to a helmet I liked, got all the information, then bought it online.

I know, not good for the shop. But I saved over $70 that way and got the exact same helmet brand new. I know what kind of markup they get. I just want them to get it from someone else.:D

It does sport the Epicski helmet sticker, which was my brainchild years ago, boast and brag, boast and brag. It's the only thing on my helmet till Ski Diva makes a sticker.

 One thing to absolutely consider in a helmet choice is temperature--I have a Boeri Myto Air (essentially solid shell with 2 small vents) and a Gyro Fuse (very light weight with lots of venting) and learned the hard way to pay attention to which one I pack. Brain freeze can totally ruin your day! For cooler and frigid days I'll only be using the Boeri, and for warmer days and spring conditions I'll only be using the Gyro. Overall, though, the more solid shell seems more versatile.

Very true. My helmet -- a Boeri -- has a couple of vents in the front that I can open and close, depending on the temperature.

One more thing you might want to consider. I have a little skull cap that I wear under my helmet, when it's really, really cold. I try avoid it, since. it makes the helmet fit more snugly and dampens sound a bit. But it really does make it warmer.

I bought a youth helmet for my first. I have a small head and found it to be the only one available at the end of the season that fit. It was okay and I got a lot of use out of it, but I bought a Giro Fuze at the end of the season to replace it. I can tell already I'm going to like it better. The padding is placed nicely and the tuneups are a great addition.

The Giro nine and ten are very popular among women I know.

I have a boeri and a gyro fuse. I bought the gyro b/c The boeri felt too heavy on my head. It is a wamer helmut though. I have a skull cap like ski diva's and it helps keep my head warmer under the gyro.
