So both DH and I won free passes to Flatton through the Stratton10K promo. So we figured we'd give this mountain a try. After all the snow this past week I figured it would be a nice day. Both of us normally stick to the groomers and after reading the snow report all looked well.

Unfortunately we did nto make it to the mountain for first tracks due to some issues with the hotel at which we spent the night (in Brattleboro) :( and by the time we got there nothing looked as tho it had seen a groomer in some time. Not the first blue trail we tried going down , nor the subsequent green trail. It is possible that there were just so many people on the mountain that it all go tracked up, perhaps. However this was definitely not the condition we expected from the snow report. I'm on my fourth season skiing, but havne't done much with bumps. DH has been skiing for roughly 10 years longer but bumps are not nice to his knees so we generally avoid that stuff. We can both make it down the trails like that, but would prefer not. I'd hate to imagine what it would have been like for me to ski my second season, or heaven forbid someone who was just learning. As we hadn't paid for our lift tickets I suppose we got what we paid for, however it did not leave a good impression.

As for non-grooming related stuff I swear I have never seen a mountain that was quite this packed with vehicles. The area we were in was not that crowded (Sun Bowl) but I'd hate to imagine what the lift lines etc must have looked like on the main mountain. Additionally I've also never been quite so displeased with the way parking was being handled - luckily we'd done our research and knew that we shoudl be able to find parking over at the sun bowl base lodge. otherwise we probably would've just left without skiing. I hate to sound so negative but overall I was just not impressed and don't see any reason to return. For the cost of a lift ticket at this mountain I expected better.

As for me skiing. Well dealing with the bumps was interesting. I was most definitely not comfortable - mostly due to a lack of trusting myself to be able to ski them - the trail was quite crowded which didn't help. However after remembering some tips I made it down w/o being horrible (at least so I think). When I just relaxed and let myself ski it went ok, but I just couldn't trust enough in my abilities. However my quads definitely burned from the experience. Perhaps I might try bumps again when there is the ability to ski something else in between, which would make me more confident but when there is no choice...

(Ok. Hopefuly I don't sound like too much of a whiner here...)

How much snow did the region get Friday night? It's just not possible to groom it while it's falling. Most places let it be. Doesn't take much traffic at all to track it and start forming bumps. This is just the reality of natural snow. And yes, it is challenging stuff for anyone used to groomers. But learning to handle it (tiring any way you look at it) is, at the very least, a survival skill. Ditto bumps.

Really too bad to read about the parking situation over there, though. A lot of NE ski resorts have simply not moved ahead with traffic/parking management. Kind of makes Sugarloaf look way ahead of the rest, doesn't it? That shuttle system is beyond civilized. Makes things SO much easier...

Stratton Weekend

Hello!
I read your review and had to post. I am a Stratton Season pass holder and had to tell you that for some reason, there were millions of buses there, which made the crowds unbearable that weekend. One tip that I have is to take the shuttle over to the main base, when the Sun Bowl looks crowded. There are more lifts over there and once you get on the mountain, you should be good! I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your weekend.
