I went to Zermatt in January and while exploring the mountain we noticed Stockli Test Center advertising near the Trockener Steg transfer station which is also around the glacier. I was instantly intrigued by a stand alone Test Center building with racks and racks of only Stockli skis in view through the windows. My dream!
On the last day of the trip my group tried to get on the mountain early, but we decided we didn't make it early enough to warrant trying to go through the pass to Italy again. That was all the excuse I needed to spend my money I saved on the Italy ticket add-on on a half-day Stockli Demo instead. I was itching to try the wider 71mm waist Laser MX which on paper seemed similar spec wise to the Laser SC I just bought last spring, but I was expecting it to be more forgiving. I was worried Le Ski Mastery in Taos might not have it since they hadn't had a low 150's MX available in the last few years.
Laser MX 152cm - Took it out for one run and liked it better than the old 67mm waist version, but it still feels too soft/not stable enough for me. FOMO not an issue, whew!
After that I let Frank the manager make all the suggestions for me. It was so much fun talking to him over the folks I have spoken to on a free Stockli Demo Day in the US. He lives and breathes this on a different level.
Stockli SL 155cm with Fullflex binding - Wow! I felt like I could comfortably pressure the ski to do what I wanted and it had amazing grip. Kept these for several runs on wide, groomed slopes. I had to be a little careful not to catch an edge on the flatter run outs since I'm not used to such a narrow waist of 66mm. Because I didn't love the feel of the old MX at 67mm I had just assumed I might not like sub-70 waist skis. I was happy to be proved wrong on that and try and ski I would not likely have tried on my own.
Stockli CX 149cm with MC11 + D20 plate binding - Was curious about the shorter size after skiing the SL and in hindsight probably should have swapped to the 156 to compare. Felt more stable on this compared to the MX in similar length. Felt like I was really able to control fore/aft balance in the bumps on these and still felt stable down the groomers. Might be my new favorite ski. If I recall Frank called it the little sister of the SL.
I might be asking more questions about the plates at Le Ski Mastery in a few weeks. I like my SC's I bought recently and enjoyed them down to the bottom of the mountain post demo, but can tell I have to be on top of them more and can more easily get pushed back if I get nervous because of conditions, etc. The CX does just feel a little easier to manage.
