i'm taking my two kids to utah on wed. ddp is staying at home.

1. should i take nordica victorys or power thangs? i will be skiing w/ the kids, so imagine i will not venture off piste. i would like to go alone one day and take a powder lesson but am not sure either of my skis would be up for that. if i did do that, where would you recommend going for a lesson on off piste skiing in april.

2. where to go? alta will be open part of the time. snowbird will be open whole time. Brighton will be open. And I haven't skied up on Ogden in a gazillion years. I would like a bargain since it's two kids and myself. i'll have a rental car and will be staying w/ family.

3. How to dress both myself and the kids. They laughed themselves silly last night at the idea of not wearing long underwear under their bibs.

I'm not a gear-head, but I think the Victorys are more an all mountain ski, which might meet the needs of variable snow conditions (soft to frozen) you are likely to find in the spring here.

Alta for sure, Brighton was great yesterday and the crowds are gone (though night skiing ends this week). Finish out the time at Snowbird. Snow is great, all resorts have plenty.

Layers. It's nippy in the a.m. and up top. Sun warms things up mid-day. I dress for the cold, but a bit lighter than deep winter. The under layers will depend on the outer coat---if bulky, go lighter underneath without a mid-layer or heavy fleece.

Yesterday I wore a light or mid-weight undie layer, t-shirt, fleece vest, and hard shell jacket/pants. Other days, I just wear my mid-layer liner jacket without a hard shell.

With layers, you can ditch one of the layers if it heats up (the fleece or the hard shell, depending on the day).

I need the glove liners/shells for the hands, but ditch the shells mid-day, as liners are fine when warm. But what's warm in the mid-day can turn to cold, so the layers go back on.

Sunblock.

Hey Julie, I'm so jealous! I hope you guy's have stellar spring skiing! I agree about wearing layers temps change a lot in the course of the day. I bought a Dakine mini pack, they look like a shrunk back pack. I don't really want or need to carry a full size pack. It's awesome it's small and sleak. Just big enough not to hinder me on the chair but it holds all the things that don't fit in my pockets. I can fit an compressed fleece jkt in mine along with my video camera, chapstick ,sunscreen and sunglasses and power bars , water bottle. They are great if you don't want to be tied to a lodge. We bought them originally to carry the v. camera's we use for movement analysis for our ladies seminar's. But once you get use to them and the convenience you carry them all the time. I now have three of them in all kinds of colors and patterns. They run about $25.00 but this time of year you can almost alway's get them on sale. Another plus is they are not overly large for pre -teens and teens to carry. I've even started using it on short trail rides when I don't want to bother with my saddlebags, I always carry treats, water, and a hoof pick. I don't know how old your kids are but it's always a good Idea for them to have a small card that has your and their names, cell number, place that you are staying in case of an emergency. (Sorry ski patrol in me coming out.) When my boy was younger I always kept a picture of him in his ski helmet and goggles in the card holder with my credit card. Big mountian lots of trails and kids don't always follow directions. It's easy to get seperated. Pictures worth a thousand words. We both have cell phones now. So I don't worry so much, and frankly at his age there are lots of time that I wish he'd just get lost! Just kidding! Well I'm off to the horse expo have fun next week!
