Spring Skiing Fail-Killington :(

Sadly I had to reschedule my February trip and was hoping for some typical spring conditions at Killington this weekend (March 29-30). This was the earliest we could reschedule for, and since we bought k-passes we had to use them this season. Having young kids and a spouse who often works weekends makes skiing challenging!

The initial forecast was rain in Sat and clear on Sun, but as it got closer the forecast got colder and the rain looked like it might turn to snow. I’ve had a good time skiing in the rain before so I wasn’t too worried, and I was holding out hope that it wouldn’t be too bad.

Saturday we woke up to ice and a notice that the lifts were delayed about a hour for re-grooming and we should watch their updates.

We got to the mountain, keeping spirits up and looking at the high points, like a great parking spot and the potential for short lines.

As we were hanging out the snowshed double and the bear mountain triple opened while the estimated time for other lifts got pushed back. Long story short, the gondola and lifts that service the upper part of the mountain never opened and since we don’t ski double blacks, especially in when they are ice and visibility is horrible due to fog, we were limited to the runs off of the Snowden six and the northbrook quad. Conditions weren’t great but at least we got to ski.

We went to bed that night hoping Sunday would be better, but we woke to more ice and power outages at Killington. We kept watching opening times getting pushed back, and when the estimate was 11 we decided to cut our losses and head home.

We made the right decision, as Killington never ended up opening.

Skiing is always better than not skiing, but the mountain has to open!

I can’t make it back this year, is anyone interested in purchasing two K-tickets? I paid $140 each but I’m willing to take less. (I’ll post them on the swap & sale sub as well).

I live not far from Killington, and this has been the worst ice storm I've seen in probably 10 years. Trees and branches down everywhere, power outages, roads closed; it's been awful. Ski areas from Killington on south were all affected: Okemo, Stratton, Bromley -- everyone. My husband and I just tried to drive over the mountain behind our house and had to turn back. It looks like a war zone. On top of this, the accompanying rain has wreaked havoc on the snow. I'm not sure that my season is completely over, but it's pretty near done. :frown:

@diymom and @DebbieSue you were there too!
We were indeed. Luckily we were able to get there on Friday, so we had one great, sunny day. Saturday the company made up for the weather. I asked @DebbieSue to scout conditions for me, and after her first run the report back was "Wait, don't come out yet!" And several of the group that went out at the same time came in after the first run. They did go back out though. And I did get out for a bit in the afternoon. Being a New England Diva, she still skied from about 10-3, with an equipment change (aka dry pants) at lunch.

We considered heading to Sugarbush on Sunday, but the weather alerts gave us pause. And their lifts were on hold too. We still planned on heading to the (powerless) K1 lodge to hang out with some hopes, but you all know how that turned out by now.

Some of the group who were staying at an airbnb had no power when they woke up, and even ended up sawing up a tree to just leave their condo to go home.

Spring in New England

As per @diymom, Friday was quite good at Kton. Got some fun runs in with her and @liquidfeet. The sky was extraordinarily clear, with views from the Peak lodge extending to Sunapee, Magic, Okemo, and so on. Natural snow Ridge Run off North Ridge chair was very good. A great “Spring Skiing” day. Saturday in freezing rain was “interesting.” The terrain that was groomed overnight was tooth chattering awful. The AM regroomed stuff was OK, as was the natural snow, if you could find it and not be intimidated by occasional rock faces, moss, or shrubbery.
It was a bit wet, but not windy…did not feel cold, but neck and face protection was necessary as well as a certain tolerance of precipitation on goggle lenses. New England skiing at its finest!!! My fav run that day was Northstar, natural snow run off the Snowden 6 bubble chair.

I had no idea- we went from snow to rain up here and the ice was never that bad. Sorry you southerners were dealing with that!
