I have all parts crossed for you, @AJM. Doing the snow dance in 97 degrees (31.6 C). Yuck.Meanwhile down here there is no snow , as in no snowIts still early days yet but so far "Winter" (note the brackets !) has been super mild and the ski areas that were planning on opening this weekend have all delayed.
What date do the resorts typically open ? I know based on snow etc but curious .

Usually the second week in June is about right, but yes it’s always snow dependant. And different areas open at different times, the north island is often later than the South Island due to be warmer up there

If I was booking a ski holiday in NZ, I wouldn't count on June at all. Even July is iffy, though there should be some sort of base by mid-July. When you have kids who are at school, that can be quite tricky. I'm glad we personally are past that now, though I worry for our future grandkids. Having said that, snow cover seems to be increasingly better towards the end of the ski season here (Sept/Oct), so hopefully the industry catches up with that, especially as school holidays usually do coincide with that timeline.
From the pictures I've seen in recent years, the early season in NZ and Australia has similarities to Dec/Jan in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast. Especially for the base areas in Australia. It's rare that snowmaking can begin before mid-November. There is usually some level of skiing possible by mid-Dec but even with snowmaking, can't expect much to be open by late December.
i did jackson hole in Late Jan and it was sparse for snow this year

At this stage its anyones guess .... the warmest day on record on Christchurch today, 25 degrees celscius in Rangiora which is unheard of !!!
If I was taking a gamble I would say August or early September "should" be the best skiing but thats based on historical facts and this year is FAR from historical

My son's high school is doing their annual ski trip right now to Perisher. And it's sad.
I feel bad for the kids, all doing their booked lessons on some crusty slush. The majority of them this will be the first time they've ever seen snow, so some of them will be happy rolling around and getting on a toboggan. I'm questioning whether it's worthwhile sending him when it's his turn next year unless they move it to later in the season.

My granddaughter, who's working full time at Big White (ski resort near Kelowna, BC) considered going to Sunshine but decided against the five-hour (or maybe longer) drive. Tempting though!

I think thats somewhere nearish to where I live. We had a "storm" (and I say that loosely!) roll through over the last few days which has cooled things down and Mt Hutt has managed to get some terrain open today. Coronet Peak is battling on with there begginers area and Cardrona have got some beginner terrain open as well . Not the start we were hoping for that's for sure
