Well on the drive down from Quebec we stayed a night in Burlington and decided to get one last day of skiing in. Condition-wise it turned out to be the best of the trip, mostly due to the chance storm that hit the area.
We woke up to 2-3" of some of the lightest snow I've ever seen on the truck and were excited to head out. We had chosen Smuggs despite the small number of trails open mostly because we're cheap and it was a fairly inexpensive ticket.
As we headed out of the city though the snow stopped and my mood quickly got bad. We'd had poor luck with our choices all trip, first choosing to head way north to avoid the warmup and then getting hit with some bitterly cold temps and missing 6-8" of snow down in VT (we did get a few inches one day, and at least the base was there).
Anyway, our luck turned this time though and as we got closer to the mountains we drove into the storm, big fat flakes falling and it looked like the area had gotten at least a few inches.
We found the parking lot and were excited to see several inches, maybe even 6" in some areas, laying everywhere. This stuff was fluffy and light.
Got 1-2 runs in before the powder got ate up, since it was so light and there wasn't much base, it got devoured pretty quickly. By mid-afternoon it was all skiied off, in fact by 10 am I was feeling the boniness underneath. Some areas were nothing but sheet ice under the snow, and several times I hit sticks, bumps that the lack of base left exposed. Once I launched out of my skis, nothing hurt though, except maybe my bases a bit.
It was pretty good skiing though, just a shame the lack of base. Well, hopefuly they can get some more storms with some more substantial snow in the next few weeks to recover. Anyway, good day. Sorry no action shots, too busy skiing!
