Smuggler's Notch (VT) powder on Dec. 20

Ah, yes. It's been a while since I've had the sensation of sinking in to some pow-pow, but yesterday was the day.

My husband and I hit Smuggler's Notch just as the lifts opened. It was darn cold (my exposed hair frosted over) but with a little extra layering we had a great time skiing our first powder day of the year!

We had about 8 to 10 inches of powder and it was light and fluffy, like it is in Utah and Colorado even! I posted more photos at skimaven.com, but here's one.

And here's the real kicker--it's dumping here in northern Vermont today. We're going to try to play hooky tomorrow so we can get more pow-pow! I'm sure more terrain will open with today's storm.

What a nice holiday present from Mother Nature. :snow:

Smuggs Monday morning update

I was fortunate to be able to hit the slopes this morning (Monday) and I was sure glad I did. Smuggler's Notch probably got another 10 inches of snow Sunday through Monday morning. It was cold again, but hearty skiers and riders were lining up at the Sterling lift before it opened -- I was one of them

The only thing is that Sunday brought strong winds and they picked up again while we were skiing this morning. So....the light fluffy powder was a bit harder to find because a lot of the snow had become a bit windpacked. (I found that out the hard way when I was making innocent turns and then my skis dove down deep into a pocket of snowpacked powder. Bam! At least it was a very soft landing!) The wind also helped to expose more rocks and brush on the steeper natural snow trails, so I had to pick my way around a bit on those.

Overall I got in some great powder turns before Christmas! Wahoo!

Looks like you had some good skiing at Smuggs. I've skied Smuggs twice, in late March (I own a timeshare there for week 12), and have yet to ski in the plentiful fresh snow they get, hoping to get lucky this March~
