Small boots will not fit into new bindings

So...I have discovered that size matters after all!

A couple of weeks ago, I visited the Salt Lake area to enjoy some skiing with my husband. (Arizona, again, had another dismal snow year. This will probably be the last time we purchase season passes)

My true intent was to demo skiis. As an intermediate skier I wanted to discover the relationship of a ski and my potential. I tried several, many of them recommended by you ladies, and reviews. Had a great time, but nothing really clicked until one of my last demos. When I returned home I purchased the pair I liked and could work with the best.

Also, on my agenda was to re-check the boots I own with the Bootfitters in Park City. Not really wanting to blame"the gear" for my technical difficulties---some much room for error when you're an intermediate---I still had a nagging doubt about the fit of my boots.
As I skiied I became too aware of trying to maintain balance, getting over the ski, and feeling my toes curl up so often that i realized my brain was engaged more frequently on these issues, and the accompanying cursing, rather than all the" fun" I was having!

Yes, my boots are too BIG.

recommended were junior race boots. High-quality, low volume, small sizes. I need a 21 or 21.5 . Now that i own new skis I have discovered that the bindings will not accommodate these little boots. The maunfacturer of the skis initially said that the sole length of my boot of interest would fit. Then when I questioned them again, just to be sure, they said "no bueno".

MY QUESTION TO THE DIVAS: Any of you have a similar problem and which boots did you find work best for you? At this point I have new skis and need a boot that will fit! I already have a 22.5 (22.0), although the volume is not low.

by the way Skigirl; I desperately wantedd to demo the Fischer Vi70, but no one even carried them. But...hey, if I wanted to purchase them here from a store or two in Phoenix they have them right there in stock. Go figure.

Smartrack system

Jilly,
I now have the Salomon Siam ski that comes with the integrated Smartrack binding.
My other skis are the Atomic Balanze Diva 7 and the Rossi Banidt from 2004, iI believe. After demoing the K2 Burnin' luv, One Luv, Lotta luv, Rossi Attraxion, Dynastar Exclusive 10,and Volkl S4, I was about to call it quits for the season with demos. As I still had time left on the money, the man in the shop asked me to try the Siam.
I'd really had no intention of demoing that particular ski, but did anyway. It was about three o'clock, the lifts were soon to close.
I enjoyed myself so much on those skis that I snuck up on a last ride
and hated to end the day.
I weigh 95lbs. I am strong but not carrying a lot of mass. the flexibility of this ski and its wider width(more like the Lotta)offered me the fun and stability I was looking for. That's why I got them!

I loved the Siam's too. Siam 10 is the top this year. Your weight the 8 would be better. Next year the ski is still around, but they changed to names instead of numbers. Origins is the top. I'm taking a pair 10's this weekend to Tremblant. When I'm at the shop tomorrow I'll ask our guy about your boots size vs Siam binding. We're a Salomon shop, also the warehouse for Canada is about 10 mi away. Also on your boot there is another number - its the sole length. Might need that too. For example - my 24.5 have a sole length of 285mm.

The Salomon S610 seem to fit the Jr boots and I know there are a few others also. Did the ski shop recomend any fixes to make the boots fit? I have heard that some bindings have special adjustments or there are plates to place under the boot, but I'm not sure. Jr boots definitely have a different toe & heel height.

I don't have the exact boots that I will purchase. the Junior Tecnica Diablo Race 90 is a 260. The seller of the boot told me the sole length before sending out. My local dealer said that 257 was as low as they could go.

My friend had the same problem with Jr. boots, not fitting adult bindings. She was unwilling to buy new bindings so the shop got her Rossingnol jr boots. They are a 21.5 and she's happy with the fit of her binding.

Do you use an orthotic in your boots? I'm in the same situation as you but use orthotics. They take up just enough space in the boot to put me in an adult 22.

If you decide to go that route be aware that Head, Lange and Nordica are the only manufacturers that make a "true" 22 shell. The others "cheat" by using a 23 shell and blocking the toe with plastic. Eventually the liner packs out and you can notice the plastic around your toes.

You're on the track that I'm thinking of, but I know that SkiBob can find a fix. There is probably an adjustment that the shop might not know about or something similar!! I'll find out tomorrow.

Jilly,
thank you so much for your help.
Yes, I do have footbeds. I've also been to the Bootdoctors in Telluride--last season--where they charged me $200 to fix the problem with the heel not staying down, and to fill in the arch area.
I can't say that much of this has helped. But then again, the boots may have packed out enough by this time that not much else could be done. Last season was the first time I had used them!
The other race boots suggested for me were: Rossignol Radical Jr. and some Lange Junior race.
If I could find a womens' boot that met some of the specs,(real small 22...yeah right) then I might be in business. However, these above boots are supposed to come with adult-length soles.

I hate to discourage you but I have the Lange Exclusive 100FR and they wouldn't fit me without my orthotics. My orthotics are built up a little to take up space in the boot. I also have heel lifts. They bring my ankles up in a better spot in the boots.

Langes are a very narrow, low volume boot. My friend and I were told that the smallest boot fit will be with higher end boots.

I just bought the Head Dream Thang in a size 22 and they fit very nicely with the orthotic.

About 10 years ago I bought Technica boots from the Boot Doctor in Taos. They sold me 22.5's instead of 22's. They padded those boots everyway possible but they eventually became to loose.

Good luck, the women's store Outdoor Divas in Denver https://www.outdoordivas.com/outdoordiv/ have been our salvation. They know more about women's fit than any ski shop I've been to.

At a CSIA (Canadian version of PSIA) women's event a few years ago, we really let the Lange rep have it. Complaints about fit, no small sizes, no high end boots that weren't race etc. Poor guy, he was the only rep there from a boot company. But I think that the industry is listening. There are many Diva's like Badger that are not small men or boys, they're ladies with lady like problems. Let me talk to my guy about the skis. Your boots have got to fit you and I'm sure the skis can be fixed!

From what my friend said it's the different toe and heel height of some Jr. boots that prevents them from fitting adult bindings. That's why Outdoor Divas went on a search for the Rossignol Jr. boot for her.

I read on a ski shop websight where a bootfitter went on a rant about boot companies not making small boots, 22 and smaller for women with small feet.

OK Badger - the smallest boot sole length that fits into an Salomon adult ski is 260mm, give or take a few mm's. We took the slide out of the binding to check. The height of the toe/heel peice is adjustable, so not in the equation. Its the sole length that your problem. You're saying that the sole length is 260 so it will work.

Jilly,

Awesome! Now I hope that the boots fit well enough so that I can get them adjusted for next season. I genuinely appreciate your taking the extra time in your ski day to check this out for me! Boots should be here Friday. I work 12 hours Friday and will play with them a little at night and see if I should drive to Phoenix Monday for the binding set-up with the Tecnicas. I may go down there anyway to see what they have available in a low-volume womens' boot in a 22.
Thanks again.
