Skis in Thule Box

ski now work later

Last season, I used my Thule box all season for transporting my skis and my kids' skis and boards. I used large beach towels to wrap the skis so they didn't bang and scrape against each other, but the towels, being terry cloth, held water when wet and it encouraged rusting. I'm looking for some blankets or other suggestions for this winter that will protect the skis but keep them dry. Ideas?

It doesn't matter what you use, even no towels, the skis will rust. Before you put anything in the box, remove all snow and ice, and then wipe down with a towel. They will still get some rust, but won't be lying in a pool of melted water. The box keeps the moisture inside and then add some freezing and thawing, rust. We try to make sure that the skis are dry before putting them in the box.

Sad to say, there is no definite solution. Even when we ski two days in a row, we take all of our skis in the house, and dry them before we load them back up.

The material we use to keep the skis from banging together is a large piece of boat upholstery. It is mildew resistant which is nice for the longevity of the fabric, but moisture on skis is moisture on skis. Just not something you'll avoid without completely drying them.:(

Cheapscape has its rewards! ;)

I never had roof racks until this year. So I couldn't leave the skis in the car between trips. At the end of each weekend, they all come into the house WITH ME! Warm and dry the majority of times except on the SNOW while I'm skiing them!!!

Having said that, I do shake the bulk of the snow off before putting them in the trunk. Or I'd end up with a pool in the back of my car! :(

Always dry off your skis and wipe the edges thoroughly no matter how you transport or store them. A quick edge rub with a bar of wax or soap will help to slow the rust down, but only a complete dry-off and hot wax will mostly prevent rust.

You should be waxing your skis between trips (or every 2-3 days), anyway ;) :D

Keep the inside of your box as dry as possible, as well.
