Skis for off-the-groomed at Alta

Replies (thank you!) to my former question convinced me that my BL's would get me thru the groomed at Alta, with rentals for powder. But, my cousin just told me he likes to go off the groomed there - what's that like? Are bowl considered off the groomed (have done those, many years ago)? And, now, the question - will my BL's get me through, or are there any other suggestions?

Hi Gretchen!

You are DEFINITELY going to want to go off the groomers at Alta -- especially with the mass amount of light fluffiness we're getting this year. With the Burnin' Luv's having a 68mm waist, I think you may want to up the ante for the off-piste stuff Alta has to offer. Alta Sports (beneath the Albion Grill) does all the K2 demos, so you may want to take the Lotta Luv (78 waist) or even the Phat Luv (if it's a major pow day) out for a spin. You'll love the float the fatter ski gives you in the Alta pow!

FWIW, my aunt, who is an advanced level, but not aggro-type 50yo skier, preferred the K2 Apache Recon to the Lotta Luv because the Lotta Luv (being a women's-specific ski) were softer and she liked the strength of the Recons. She ended up buying the Recons.

First, yes, you WILL go off the groom a lot. That's what skiing the west is about. Yes, the "bowls" are NOT groomed.

That said, unless it snowed the night before, the snow tend to get tracked out and packed down pretty quickly. You end up with nicely packed moguls!

And I think the Burning Luv does moguls just fine.

What do they charge for demo's there, at Alta Sports? The Lotta Luvs look interesting. Also was wondering abt. the Nordica Conquer. Can anyone describe how the Lotta's and the Conquer's compare? Also, we're staying in SLC - are demo's from there less expensive than on the Mountain? I keep speculating, at $40 - $50 a try to demo, it'd almost be worth it just to spring for a pair of skis wider than the BLuv's. Worst case, I could re-sell?

Most shops will put the demo fee towards your purchase. And if you're not used to fat skis, I'd certainly recommend demoing several before making a purchase. Unless you have a crazy deal lined up somewhere that you think you could re-sell them for close to what you paid for them.

Last year when I demoed, I didn't think they were significantly cheaper in the valley than on the mountain. I can't remember exactly, but it's definitely nice to demo on mountain and be able to swap out skis several times in a day (no extra charge for that) to find the one you really like, especially if you're thinking about buying.

I thought this is what sounds good about demoing at the resort, altagirl! If we pick up skis down in town, if we don't like them, we're stuck with them all day. (granted, we can have our own skis along too) It also means a separate fee for each ski we test ride. There's a nifty economy in a few extra dollars at the resort!

Thanks for the feedback. The idea of swapping out skis is great. Curious - has anyone demoed both the Lotta's and the Conquers and give some descriptions of how they comparatively behave?
