Skinny, MidFat, Fat, SuperFat!

When I started looking at fat skis, I thought of the Metron as a fat ski, which it is in the tip and tail, but the waist makes it a carver(in my mind).

The past year, with the shocking introduction of the Pontoon, which I looked at and said, "what fool is going to ski that!?"

Lots of people skiing it and loving it, including some substantial female skiers, Cloudpeak comes to mind
Makes me wanna try it too!

After a few quiver changes over the past year(okay, more than a few quiver changes) I've noticed my quiver is getting wider and a lot more fun.
Thank goodness my waist hasn't changed at the same rate as my ski's waists

A few threads lately have included FIS changes which are "getting fatter"
This one comes to mind

So, if the FIS is getting fatter, and we are thinking fatter, is the new skinny the old midfat, the midfat the old fat, and so on, and so on..............?
My idea of
Midfat a year ago was 72-80 ish, today more like a 78-89 ish (karmas at 86, and snoopdaddy's at 88 are fine midfats in my quiver)
Fat 90's
Superfat ^100
When did a ski below 77 look so skinny?

I still have one consumer race ski for playing and carving, but I see wider waists in my quiver than I ever imagined, and I'm loving it!

I remember getting the gear issue of Ski magazine last year and looking at all the reviews of fat skis and thinking, "Whoa, I'm never going to need anything like that!"

Then I made the mistake of skiing on 'em. Wow! Turned me right around!

Now I'm the proud owner of a new pair of Volkl Queen Attivas -- which, with an 88 waist, aren't even considered that fat anymore. And I'm wondering if I could use something even fatter!!!!

(By the way, Divas, this forum has had an awful effect on me. I now officially have a QUIVER: Rock skis, all mountains, and mid-fats -- I guess that's what you'd call 88's now. You people are a bad influence! Shame on you! :D )

You're right Ski Diva - this forum is a BAD influence. Last year I was perfectly content with one pair of skis. Then I bought a skinny pair (Head Fast Thangs) for the hardpack around here. Now I think I have to have something fatter than my Dynastars (75 mm.) I will be demoing in Crested Butte this week when I am out there. I see another pair of skis in my future!:D

This is the example of how I refined my quiver for the 2006-07 season, after the influence of the vast knowledge of these forums:

From left to right
Volkl Karma 86
TheSki 69 ish
Burnin Luv 69(for sale)
Volkl Race Tiger RC 67!!
Nordica Nitrous 78
New addition, not pictured Snoop Daddy 88

The Ski is something of a collectible so I will not part with it but its not something I ski frequently
The burnin luvs were a ton of fun for a season but I'll be demoing some new female skis for 2008(maybe something in the 82 waist)
The Karmas are also for sale because I picked up a SnoopDaddy that my husband wanted to keep for himself but now wants to get something different so I'm keeping them for me:D
The NitrousWhat a fun ski! It will likely be the family ski because me and my husband both enjoy it:smile:

Yes you ladies are a bad influence. I've been happy with the Z5's from Rossi. They're carvers with a fat tip and tail. But I'm thinking that I need something fatter in the waist too. So I'm taking a year old pair of Siam 10's this weekend from the shop to Tremblant. I know that if I really have to have them, a deal can be made. Hubby sort of has a quiver. Old skis (rock) and new Elan's this year. He also has a boot quiver. Does anyone need a 26 MP Atomic plug boot? (for their son??) He'd like to make them gone!! Doesn't like them - he's too old for a race boot!

THOU SHALT NOT COVET THY SKI DIVA'S SKIS

Yup, BAAAD influence

I thought my Head Lightning skis were super duper---until I started reading about skis in this forum and realized they were too heavy and stiff. By my calculations, Ski Divas have spent about 3 billion dollars  on new boots and skis this season as a result of coveting other ski divas' new toys. :D :D :D

Jilly, do you like your Z5s?

A male friend got the Z9 and raves about how well they turn. He said the Z5 is recommended for women. I couldn't find one to demo at the end of the season. Advanced or expert?

Same ski, Z5 doesn't have a layer of titanium, only carbon, so its a softer flex. I found the 9's too stiff for me. So, the 5's were the ones. 2nd year on them. 160lb, 5'5, CSIA II instructor and I say finesse skier, not a power house. I also got a different binding system than the one called for. I hate the tube thingy on the rossi binding (old look system), so I went conventional. When I picked them up today at the shop I was looking at the waist, I thought they were narrower. Also the guy wouldn't give the Siam 10's for the weekend. Well I got 2 days of demo's still on my season pass. I just might use one to try out something wider! These ladies can be such a bad influence on me. But I think you might be right SnowGlider. Alot of money has been spent!!

SnowHot, pictures like that make me so jealous.

Our bank account is going to be in trouble once we move out of the city and get some storage space.

I read the reviews but I don't swallow them line, hook and sinker. It's just a lead for me to demo. I'm pretty tight-fisted. So I don't buy anything without "trying them on", aka, demo.

There's advantage of living in the East. We only get one kind of snow, hardpack, which skiers from other area would rather call them ICE. We do have true ice. But I don't ski them. Nor do too many other eastern skiers.

So, I really don't need too many skis. One for carving the hardpack and another to ski the hardpack bumps! ;o) I'm actually on a mission to find one that does both.

When I go out west, I rent/demo. Let's see, at $500+ a pair brand new on average, it'll take about 3-5 years of renting to break even! And in the mean time, I got stuck with a 5 year old model? No thanks.

I still want to learn about different kind of skis. So I know what to ask for when I need to rent/demo. But I don't see the point of buying skis that I only used half of one week a year! Why get stuck with a 5 year old ski when I can rent this years model?

Knowledge is power. But it's too easy to become a slave of those knowledge. Just because a ski is good doesn't means you have to buy it.

Unless, of course, you got a killer deal on one. I define a killer deal as under 50% retail, because at that price, you can sell it if you don't like it without lossing money. So it's a free demo with option to keep.
