Skiing while sick...

Does anyone still get the ski bug while they're sick?? Just wondering... I've got bronchitis and still went skiing today. (The doctor I saw yesterday said it was ok to go) I want to go tomorrow, but a bunch of people are making me feel bad about it. Do all you ski divas take breaks while you are sick, or do you tough it out?

Depends how sick. I've skied with a cold, but I haven't really been sick for a long time. I'd say just do what feels right for you. Your body will tell you when to stop.

Well i felt pretty good today (aside from the fact that I kinda fell 3 times....) but I don't think it was TOTALLY to do with the fact that I'm sick. :p It just sucks because I only have the weekend to ski, I don't want to miss out!

Depends on how sick you feel. I define "sick" at minimum as a severe cold or sinus infection that leaves me crashed out on the couch all day. I won't ski if I'm sick by that definition. It makes me take that much longer to recover, being exposed to the cold air and all. Also, I just can't enjoy it if I feel miserable. If it's only a case of the sniffles and sneezes, I won't stay away, but I'll drink some hot herbal tea afterward.

Heh - Bronchtitis and Pneamonia last weekend. Skied both days and even at -25 C. Puffer and antiboitics. I do think that some of the people in the lift line thought I was going to cough up a lung though!!
All fixed now!! So try it, you might like it!!

Sometimes I feel better after a couple of runs. I had a really bad cold a couple of weeks ago, spent one day of bedrest. (As ordered by my SO!)

But when we went skiing, I found that it cleared my sinuses somehow. :noidea:

Thank goodness for the Kleenexes at the chairlift.

I've skied when I was sick--did so while the cold was coming on last week (that was a quiet night) and then again last night when I was still tired out from being sick.

Nice ski nights both times, and I felt good until I stopped.

It all depends on how strong I feel. Respiratory stuff usually gets better while I'm skiing.

I woke up with a cough on Friday ... went to Copper w/Divas and Bears anyway ... had a great day (Sudafed helped) ... was a little short of breath, but skied 9 to 3:30 anyway ...

... today I'm in bed, coughing up both lungs.

But yes, it was worth it. :D

My first ski day I had a cold and was stuffing lozenges down my throat the whole time. But I had so much fun, I forgot I was sick and I actually felt a lot better afterwards...so like Jilly I think fresh air and exercise can help..but it probably depends on how sick you are..

Oh, Pinto, I'm so sorry to hear it! But, I completely understand, I have been fighting a cold for over a week and that's part of why I bailed when I did on Friday, seeing as how I had to coach on Saturday.

My teenager had a slight cold and woke up today feeling a little congested in her throat. She had some hot cereal, hot mint tea, some Afrin, and off we went for about 2 hours of time on the hill. She dozed on the way home and seems cured. A low grade illness like that can sometimes be cured with the right amount of fresh air and exercise, but once I went skiing and got much sicker as a result. Every illness is different.

Pinto and Haylmom, hope you feel better soon!

I was not feeling well 2 weekends ago but the weather was SO NICE that I just couldn't resist. I forced myself out of bed Saturday & Sunday and skied anyway. Well...the following week I was at the doctor with a fever & bronchitis. I'm still coughing now & probably just should have rested up...but I skied again all last weekend too, cough or not!

I just can't help myself!!

I have skied a few times when I was sick. The most memorable was two years ago when we were on vacation in Utah. It was our first trip here, and I was recovering from a really bad bout of the flu -- so bad I stayed home from work for nearly an entire week, and then back to work for 3 days, and then we flew to Utah. I was still coughing the entire time there. There is no way I was staying in the lodge.

This past weekend, I skied Sat and Sun. Sat evening I was dead tired and hurt all over - I have been battling a bit of a cold. Went out again Sunday, but by lunchtime, my whole body just hurt. So I went back to the lodge. I guess I fell asleep there (Tim came back and woke me up). A little embarrassing. Still feeling a little achey and congested though. I have to get my strength up though - big ski weekend down in SLC coming up!

Feeling any better Pinto? I am all rested up and ready to do some more turns this weekend!

Finally! I worked out today and I was tiiiiired ... but it felt good. I will play tennis tomorrow, but no skiing until we go to Yoootah next week.

Thanks for asking ... glad to hear you are better, too.

Fresh Air, Sunlight and Water are the basics of good health.

Expanding your lungs with fresh air definitely helps when you have the crud in them.
On the other hand, if you're contagious, its not fair to those around you to spread the germs.

I really struggle with the contagious thing, because I find it difficult to stay home when I should.:o
