Skiing Lift Lines

Do you like to ski lift lines (runs under the lifts), or do you avoid them like the plague? I know some people feel very self conscious about skiing where they feel like they're on display.

Me, I don't really care. In fact, one of my favorite trails at Okemo (Timberline) is under a lift , though the lift generally doesn't run weekdays, which is when I ski. And when I'm on a lift, I love to watch people ski. So I'm glad people take these trails.

What about you?

I ski em all the time, my favorite run is under the lift. This thread is the first time that I've actually thought that perhaps I'm on display when I do. I figure I'm not doing anything spectacular enough to watch, and if I do, it'll probably be some hilarious fall, in which case those who catch it could get a good laugh. Always fun to brighten up someone's day

I like them sometimes, but on the east coast they tend to be the really fast runs and sometimes get a bit icy. We usually do them as warmups and then head further away from the lift. I do like some of the ones under the lift lines at Okemo (not sure if it's Timberline, don't remember names), they have some nice rollers you can hit and catch some air on. Some of the ones that wind through the trees under the liftlines look fun, but mostly those are not really 'runs' especially out east here but still I am always tempted to take them...

Jeez, some people are so self-conciouse???

Sorry, just never thought about lift line runs that way. Wouldn't have change anything though.

Maybe because I'm not really that judgemental on the achievement of others, I don't really think much about how others might judge me. Couldn't care less either way.

I love skiing under the chair.....I treat the chair towers as gates for race training. :D

The snow is usually better there because people avoid doing it. So yes, I like skiing the lift line.

I have a cute "under the liftline" story. I was skiing two winters ago at Sugarloaf with another couple and their daughter, who 14. She also is an outstanding skier and rider. When we all gathered after getting off of the chairs, the three adults decided to ski under the liftline (Spillway). The snow was good as were the bumps. The teenager refused, saying "I hate to ski under the lift where people can see me." Her father said, "That's funny, considering you spent about an hour in front of the bathroom mirror putting on makeup this morning and another hour putting together the jacket, pants and hoodie ensemble."

We were night skiing at Crystal and I was weaving between the lift towers on Ridge Run, gaining speed, not paying any attention to how far down the run I was. Moments later........"Oh sh*t, ROPE!!!".

I had gotten down to where the lift is low enough to the ground that there's a triangular area roped off so no one gets banged in the head by dangling skis as the chairs rise overhead. :o I saw the rope, tried to stop, and slid underneath it instead. Of course, the area isn't groomed so the snow was super soft snd deep and I just sank to the bottom.

There I am....buried in snow, on the wrong side of the rope, upside down, laughing hysterically, as everyone on the chair goes over my head hooting and hollering. I was laughing so hard I couldn't get myself untangled and out of there. :D Hubby rescued me once he quit laughing and could breath again.

Kris, Its good to stop before that little building;)
Glad you got untangled.

One of my favourite lift lines to ski is under the North Chair at Caberfae. You can catch a little air just as you enter, then let it rip!

I got over being self-conscious about skiing under the lift lines my first year skiing, as I was flailing down Pucci (Timberline) under the lift. It never failed. Every time I had a dramatic fall, I'd hear "Hi, Mrs. R-W!" and giggling from the lift above.

(The lesson times were during a Friday night group ski session for our school. I was commiserating with another teacher and her comment was that she *never* heard any comments from kids until she fell in the weirdest possible positions!)

Hmmm did not really notice this thread first time around. Lift lines can be a lot of fun, and some of my favorite ski slopes are those under the lift. I tend to feel more self conscience when I am skiing resorts in the west.

It's pretty funny - one of the girls we ski with is one of the best skiers at Alta. Not one of the best female skiers, the best skiers. She's flat out amazing. And she won't ski under a lift - ever.

Even on days when there is no on on the lift! Literally - we've been there on days when there isn't a single person that you can see on Wildcat, and there's untouched powder right under the lift and there's nothing you can do or say to make her ski it - she's afraid someone will see her.

I'm not nearly as good as she is - I just don't care. I paid to ski there and I'm taking all the good lines I can get. :D

Altagirl, are there some places that the run just goes under the lift and you can't avoid it?

Keeping in mind that my Mountain skiing is limited, there are some hills here that the run that is served IS the lift line.
Like the one that Volklgirl described, the Ridge, at Crystal Mountain, MI.

It depends on the slope. If I think I can ski it passably, I'll do it. If I think I will provide chair lift entertainment, I won't. End result is there are four lifts (well, two are t-bars) I haven't skied under and about eight I have.
