Skiing in the rain

Last night was my first time skiing in the rain. It was pretty awesome. I think the combination of it being night skiing and it being raining was enough to keep people away, I had the runs to myself every time. There were a few people around, literally about 4 or 5 other skiers at the hill, but it all worked out so no one was on the same run at the same time. It was a great time to play around with turn shapes, and try out little tips and drills. Oh, and Lisamarie, I made it a point to do the big toe thing.

How do you guys like skiing in the rain?

Other than having the slopes to yourself, and the lifts to yourself, I really didn't like skiing in the rain the couple times I did it in New York last year.
Can't see through the goggles, and my ski pants got soaked through riding up the lift. I had originally gone to the ski hill with some friends--they had season passes, I bought a lift ticket. Once it started raining, they bailed and went home. I felt obligated to get my money's worth out of the lift ticket, so I took a few runs in the rain, by myself. Come to think of it, it might have been OK had I been skiing with someone (misery loves company, etc.). I guess I just don't like skiing alone!

We loooove skiing in the rain. It makes the big $ we spend on waterproof/breathable clothes totally worth it. Usually the snow is great and the slopes are empty - you end up just giving up trying to see though, and ski by feel ;) !

Love skiing in the rain, I justified a new jacket because of it . After 15 years, while still warm, it no longer had the waterproofing it once had, IT LEAKED. It worked ok in the snow, but bit the dust in the rain. Since it does rain in So. CA more than it snows, it was a necessary purchase - didn't hurt that I really wanted a new jacket anyway. 15 yr, just way to long to hang on to clothing you actually plan on using - Oh that reminds me, I need to purge my husbands stuff while he isn't looking.

Freezing rain is even better;)

That almost never happens in Colorado. I think I've heard of it once or twice, though. So, no experience. Don't think I'd like it.

We were prepared to deal with it when we went to Whistler a couple of years ago, but we got there after the rain (and the snow), and had nothing but beautiful blue skies and white ribbons of death (except when we got up real high ... then it was rocks and ice. Snow was good on Blackcomb Glacier, and that was it.)

My favorite ski area hands out designer trash bags to ski in the rain. Still....I'll pass and wait for another day.

Last year, early in the season, the entire ski school turned out to train for three days. I was in the first chair on the far right seat. As we went up in the quad, I felt some snow gun mist on my right ski, but we were talking and I forgot all about it---until I tried to get off the lift. There was a layer of ice on my ski and it would not move in the snow. I was standing there and the chair mowed me down!! Then, the next chair came up while I was lying on the ground--and the person in the right hand seat could not slide his ski and he landed on top of me----we were piled up four high before they finally turned off the lift. Of course, we were all laughing our heads off---and I was on the bottom of the pile!! The liftee came out and dragged us off by the armpits--like a Warren Miller movie!! Then we stood around for a while and watched people in the right hand seat try to get off the life!! They moved the gun before we took our second chair lift ride, thank goodness!!

Too funny--people at work are looking at me laughing my head off all by myself. What a great visual! Thanks, Elangirl

We like skiing in the rain. As others have said: no crowds, soft snow. Also, it's beautiful looking down into the valleys where the fog and low clouds hang.

Really, if you have waterproof/breathable clothing, you're fine. Earlier this season, it rained and we got soaked, which reminded us that we needed to buy some waterproofing to treat everything. Next time out, everything worked like a charm. ;)
