Skiing all year?

Just curious if anyone has managed to pull off at least one ski day in all 12 months of the year---
I think we have a contender amongst us! (shellski, in Australia, currently still, I believe, skiing in USA)
Also, some of the other overseas divas may have gotten in some turns in way earlier or later than we have stateside or North America in general.

The only one I personally know who has pulled this off is my son. (Diva moms of young ones, beware: your kid's/kids' long-range enthusiasm may exceed your expectations...or even any semblance of sanity)

I still have 4 unskied months: June, July, August, Sept.
(NO, waterskiing does NOT count  )

When does that NJ indoor venue (Xanadu??) open? SueNJ, any plans to visit that place? I'm intrigued. Supposedly will be bigger than the one in Dubai. Closer too.

Just two hours from where i live in Bergen, we have a summer ski centre, that's open from mid may to mid september. Haven't tried it yet, but will try to ski at least one day each month this summer :D

I've skied from November to May, so I'm missing June, July, August, September and October. Will just have to re evaluate the status in november

I haven't even tried. But if I do, I see October is going to be the tough one. It's late for the southern hemesphere and early for the northern. And I refuse to ski for the sake of skiing. So early seaon when there's only a few trails open wouldn't appeal.

(May is not so hard. There's usually a lot of snow in the high moutains, sometimes into June, while July/August are prime season down south which extends into September easily)

The ski dome at Xanadu is supposed to open later this year. You know I'll have to go at least once, so I can say I did it! For the western US Divas, supposedly a company in Las Vegas is planning to add a ski slope to their water park by 2011.

Folgefonna? My son worked there in the summer of 2004. He loved it. It definitely would be worth a trip for you. He also spent some time in Bergen and said all the women are beautiful!!

October is going to be the tough one
I thought so too. Then in late October, 2005, there was a very large storm (4 feet) in the high mountains of NH. Wildcat decided to open for as long as the snow lasted. (We all knew it would melt that early in the season.) It lasted for 4 incredible days. I went on Day 2. It was already tracked up and bumps, but to ski in October, before Halloween? Everyone had a big grin on their face a mile wide! I think another diva was there as well (persee? liquidfeet? forgive me, I've forgotten) Truly memorable. People came from 5 states. So I got to check off October!

I hope it opens before ski season starts next winter. THAT will be a fun trip report!! (from you, of course! :becky: )

One year in my perhaps distant future, I'd like to have the money saved up to work it out, taking trips to wherever necessary to keep it up. I imagine the season following that would be great, from never quite losing the ski legs :D

You have only just begun, num! Anything's possible in the future for you! Just can't wait to read your perceptions of Solitude! :yahoo: As it stands right now with respect to relative cost, it is probably less expensive to make a trip to South America and ski there than it is to Europe. The exchange rate is extremely favorable in SA, especially in Chile. I'm hoping to see more and more all-inclusive charter trips offered there in the future.

That's probably the only way that it can be done (relatively) easily: wait for a freak year when it snows in October, ski the regular season from November to June, then follow it up with a trip to the southern hemesphere for July, August and September

(Skiing November to May is, of course, taken for granted. Also I'm assuming one can push into June without too much hassle in one of the traditionally late closing resorts such as A-basin/Whistler/Mt Bechelor)

It's somewhat easier for the Rockie based skier because the chance of early snow is not too remote. And pushing into June may even be done locally if one is lucky. From the snow poor northeast, it could be a pretty long wait for that October snow year. And then you have to hope you're in position to do the trip to the south in summer that same year.

Num, I don't think it'll cost all that much more than skiing the regular season if you do it the cheapscape way. Because if you wait patiently for that October snow year, you only need to travel to do May/June, which is relatively easy, and then July-September down south. So, just two trips, one short trip and one long one. Though I can see finding enough vacation to do it might be a bigger challenge.

South America is always going to be considerably cheaper than Europe. Though I wouldn't go for the all-inclusive trips. The quotes I saw was just all unbelievely expensive consider how little things cost down there.

For my trip to Central America last November, I spend only about half as much as any average "all-inclusive" trip I can get from N. America. The trick is I booked everything directly with the local source, thanks to internet. We (me & my Mom) still lived like Queens down there!

If you have FF miles, great. Otherwise, it's not all that expensive to get a flight down in "their" winter anyway. Not expensive in terms of what many routinely pay to fly out west for X'mas skiing.

(I know, I'm the quententiential cheapscape. This is President's day weekend, and guess what? I'm NOT (downhill) skiing 'cause I don't want to pay full ticket price. I'm skiing back country in my brand-spanking new x-c skis, the cost of which is less than the 3 day no discount lift tickets!!! :D )

I've got the easy ones... Dec thru May

Also have October due to business trip in CO in early 90s. CO got tons of snow and my co-workers and I quickly picked up some cheap clothes and rented the rest. We were a motley looking crew, but we were skiing!

I'll need to get my act together and grab a Nov day next year.

As for the indoor NJ skiing, was at Meadowlands a month ago. The building/ramp looks big, but not ski slope big! It's gonna be a zoo. I guess if I go I should be sure to make it June-Sept so that I pick up another month.

I've got October through July. I'd like to do a trip to South America sometime, but I'd also like to do more bike trips in winter...

Well, now thinking about it I've got October-April plus June. Should be able to fill in May easily at Arapahoe Basin. So, I need to find July-September. Dad lives in Oregon, maybe I need to plan a summer trip to hit Mt. Hood and then head back to Chile.

Same here.

I'll find it hard to get motivated to fly half way around the world to ski in the summer when I can bike out the door.

Yeah, and prime summer ski season is also prime season at Whistler... so if I'm going to spend the money on a trip, it'd be to the Whistler Bike Park.

One of these years I'll do both!

I've never really skied outside of the December-early March window. I've been looking into places to ski this summer. A trip south is not in the budget for this year. I was looking at Mt. Hood... but I was confused by their website. Are they only open for ski camps in the summer? Or is the mountain open to the public?
