skigrl27, hope you and your crew are not affected by the fires. Saw Carbondale and El Jebel on the news, and I knew you at least used to be out El Jebel way.

Hope all is well and smoke is not too horrid.

So weird to see fires already in mountain communities, with this much snow still around!

Eek! Hope you and yours are well, skigirl27, and everyone in that region. How bad are the fires, Moll?

Here's the info from 9news.com:

Authorities in Carbondale feel they can finally start battling a blaze that forced evacuations of a private school and a subdivision. The wind-driven 100-acre wildfire that started at about noon and as of about 7 p.m., temperatures began to drop and winds began to let up.

"It's moved very, very, very quickly," said Tanny McGinnis, a spokesperson for the Garfield County Sheriff's Department. "It started on private property and it's been fueled by 50 mph winds all day long."

Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario said Tuesday the fire was burning in mostly brush and grass.

About 120 homes were evacuated, but it was not known how many residents and students were being moved. Many of the students had already left for the day when the evacuation began at 1 p.m., however, some have been separated from their families.

Evacuation shelters have been set up at Roaring Fork High School, located at 2270 Hwy. 133 in Carbondale, and El Jebel Community Center, at 200 JW Drive in El Jebel, McGinnis says.

McGinnis tried to reassure parents that their children are in good hands.

"We are keeping your children safe," said McGinnis. "We are with them. They're with familiar people, teachers, members of their school. So, please have some confidence. We're doing our darndest."

A five-mile stretch of Colorado 82 was closed due to heavy smoke, but one lane in each direction was opened at about 7 p.m. A 3-mile radius was set up around CO 100 and Highway 82, which locals know as the "Catherine Store area."

One injury has been reported in the blaze. That person was taken to a local hospital. The victim's condition in not known at this time, according to McGinnis.

The fire has jumped Highway 82 and continues to head east, according to McGinnis. She says multiple agencies have responded and the blaze is less than 10 percent contained at last check.

Whoah, do you have 2 fires in colorado right now? It does seem early for the Mountains doesn't it? Of course they say the old fires burn underground smoldering in the roots even under the snowpack. Weird, we did have lightening a couple nights ago though. I hope everyone is okay. Any ideas on what ignited it?

I am OK!!

I live in Woody Creek now - lucky I moved. Otherwise getting home last night would have been nearly impossible. The fire was right near my old place.

Only 4 structures caught, but all were saved. A few close calls. The fire is still burning now & the skies are hazy upvalley. There's a much bigger fire down near Pueblo somewhere.

There's snow in the forecast tonight, so hopefully the moisture will help the firefighters out.

There are actually a number of fires burning here in Colorado right now. The Carbondale fire, the Ordway fire (near Pueblo, which has killed 2 people I believe) and a fire on Fort Carson (which killed a pilot fighting the fire from the air).

Skigirl27 I'm glad you're okay.

Ughhh yuck. Everyone is burning pastures, brush etc here right now too, the funny thing is, is they are supposed to be doing it to create a defensible space to prevent fires, not start them. The wind here with all the burning has been somewhat unnerving, I am surprised we haven't seen more problems, we probalby would if weren't for the cool temps and intermittent snow showers. I feel for you guys, I would be out of my mind if the fires started this early here. What a bummer, are they calling for flooding in the next couple weeks too?

I saw that about the pilot, do you know what type of plane, like a tanker or smokejumper. A spotter? Alot of those are stationed out or here haven't heard yet if it was a local or not.

Very small plane from what I read. I think part of our city would like to send you water. We're on flood alert and evac notices in part of the city. I don't want to see fires starting already.

Are you affected by the flooding at all? We have been promised floods, as soon as it stops snowing. We don't really know whether to be happy that we are getting the moisture, or if at this point it's adding insult to injury. We are stuck waiting literally to see how it all comes down. Hope you are okay, keep us posted with your situation too.

The Moira River is flooding just north of the 401 highway here. There are alot of homes built along the river on the flood plain. Come summer and lower water levels, nice places. But this happens, its a bad year and the river - runs through it!! Since Ontario teens need community service hours to graduate from high school, there has been lots of help making sandbags. River to crest today, so things will begin to receed. That said, the city next to us - Quinte West has the Trent River flowing through it. That is expected to crest next week. Levels expected to rise 1-2"/day for the next 2 weeks. The thing about the Trent is that it is mostly park land right next to the river and its part of the Trent-Severn Waterway. So, not so many houses in the flood plain.

But I'd rather have this water than a fire. I've a great respect for fire. It's fine in a fireplace or wood stove. I don't like to see it out of there!!

Good to hear you aren't sandbagging your home! Sounds like they have a good handle on things too. That's good. I hate the fires too, but they have become such a part of life here, I am actually fearing the flooding more, because we don't get that as often. It's good to hear from someone going through it.

These fires always amaze me. I guess its easy to have something which seems quite minor to start something quite major.

Very windy here today, Terry is riding his dirtbike tonight. Glad, very glad he has a spark arrestor.
