Skier's Edge vs. Pro Fitter

Does anyone have experience with either of these ski trainers? (I saw a mention in another thread that someone has a Skier's Edge but isn't allowed to use it?)

I've been saving my pennies for a Skier's Edge, but then a friend said she hated hers and gave it away (before I knew her, alas) and recommended the Fitter instead. Right now I'm leaning toward the Fitter, especially since it's cheaper (and it was easy to find the price online, unlike on the Skier's Edge website).

Or is there another good option for off-season ski training that I should know about?

I use the Pro-fitter at my studio, Mountain Sport Pilates and Fitness. I had considered the Skiers Edge, but the price difference was not justified. For less than the cost of a Skiers Edge, I was able to get both the Pro Fitter and the SRF Board

which I love.

BTW, I don't remember his name, but there is a guy on Ebay who has a "buy now" store where he sells them at a discount.

Your other option is a slide board.

We have a skiers edge in the basement. It's only been used a handful of times...

Personally, I prefer doing balance workouts with a wobble board/xerdisc/BOSU ball, and just doing cardio on the elliptical or spin bike.

Well we have a Skiers Edge, got it 1.5 years ago on their summer clearance. My husband was the one who wanted it. I was more like "wait? what are we spending so much money for?". Well I really like it now. Haven't been using it as much as I should this year - haven't been skiing as much as I should either! However I can say that for me it was great to get some muscle memory and I also find it a more enjoyable aerobic workout than many other options. I really hate both kinds of exercise bike and I've never found an elliptical that was comfortable to use and I've tried about 5 different types. Treadmills get boring, plus I don't run so as to not kill my knees so that limits the workout. The only typical "machine" I like and use is a rower. Unfortunately we don't have the money/space to add a rower at the moment - hubby got a recumbent bike and we have the skiersedge - so the SkiersEdge is my aerobic workout at home.

I have no experience with a profitter, in fact I don't think I've ever even seen one so I can't make a comparison. I can just tell you that I like the Skiers Edge and I think it helped me to advance my skiing more quickly than otherwise.

My ACL rehab included the use of the Profitter and I've had a chance to try the Skier's Edge.

I loved using the Profitter. 20-30 minutes on it was an adequate work out without being totally exhausting. It's light, portable, and easy to adjust the tension. My only complaint with it was that it tends to 'creep' across the floor during use - not a huge problem, just a niggling irritation.

I found the Skier's Edge to be too demanding for me....just 1-2 minutes on it and I was toast. It's big and bulky and not easily stored. Plus the cost  !

After procrastinating about the decision for months, I ended up getting a Pro Fitter. Price, ease of storage, simplicity, and versatility were the major factors that swayed me in that direction and so far I've been happy with it. I haven't used it as much as I probably should have, but I did feel pretty good at Big Sky last week.

I have been using the Vew-Do Flow Balance board, it's a lot cheaper and not nearly as advanced as the Pro Fitter. I initially got it to retrain my equilibrium after some vertigo problems, but it became a good tool in my training package. It has the added side effect of helping my early season leg strength.

I debated about the Skier's Edge for maybe a year or two, then finally bit the bullet and got one a year+ ago. I really love it, and it's a very strenuous workout. I feel it actually helped my skiing a lot, and it certainly keeps ski specific muscles in shape all year around. I don't regret my purchase in the least! The SE is expensive, but I have seen them on sale used for quite reasonable prices. I guess people often buy, then don't really use them. True for most exercise equipment, I think.

I'm definitely guilty of not using my SkiersEdge as much as I should. I really gotta get back to it. it's a really good ski-specific workout. For my core strength/balance I do other exercises. When I make it to the gym I use their Bosu balls. When I don't (sadly too often) I have a balance disc thing at home that I picked up for $10 on clearance which is the same idea.

Fitter/Skiers Edge

I've used both at my physical therapists office after rehabing from an ACL healing response, meniscal repair and partial meniscal removal. Here's my two cents and I'm at by no means
a professional in the field..Just someone who's used them.

To me the skiers edge seems to have a lot more resistance to it. It has big bands on either side of the platform you stand on. A considerable amount of force is needed to laterally move.
Since I was trying to increase my lateral stability and strength I found the Skiers Edge harder to do. I did hang on the the rail in the front somewhat and didn't use the ski poles. I only worked on it for 2 minutes 2x a week b/c otherwise my knee would swell and hurt.
For a healthy knee it would seems to be a good workout tool.

The Fitter was much easier for me to do. Since the base is a curved shape, it felt more fluid because it lacked the resistance that was necessary to push into on the Skiers Edge.. The Fitter seemed to have more of a mechanism that utilizes your core strength as well as lateral movement.

Hope that helps, Cathy

Hi-I noticed you said you had a skiers edge that doesn't get used-would you be interested in selling it? My husband is looking for one.

thank you,

PM me, I have one. I love it, usually turn on the tube and swing it side to side. It would be hard to part with, but have space issues not to mention time constraints to really take advantage of it.

After my tibia plateau fracture 3 years ago, I needed to find a machine that would provide a non-pounding workout that I would enjoy, and possibly use often enough to justify owning it. After trying a number of machines, I settled on the Skier's Edge. One reason was that a friend of mine had purchased one the previous season, used it 5 times a week during the summer, and her skiing and body position had really improved.

I use it a lot during the summer. Mine is set up in a place where I have a dresser in front of it, that I can hold on to if I feel shaky when I first get on. The dresser also serves as a platform for my DVD player. I put on a ski movie and can do at least 1/2 hour without getting bored or exhausted. I have the tension set pretty high, but not at the top of the range. Since I got my Iphone, sometimes I just listen to that rather than setting up the DVD, depends on my mood.

I also tried the Fitter and IMHO thought it was wimpy compared to the Skiers Edge. I even talked my gym into buying one.

Well we decided ot buy a used skiers edge recently, just got lucky to find it used and a recent model. Feel it is going to really help gain strength. Build a body memory for the right technique as we had stopped skiing for several years. So feels like learning how to ski. SO am thrilled to have the skiers edge.

Really beats going to the gym and I love the flow of the movement it creates.

I think you'll find you really love this machine.....you've just got to make sure you keep using it! I've had mine for a couple of years now, and I still love it!
