Ski Rental Prices Outrageous. Need to buy instead!

Last year I rented Solomon Scrambler 700s while I was in Keystone. I paid $195 for 6 days. Not too bad. They were pretty new too.

This year I'm going to Beaver Creek and I need to rent skis from the Ritz Carlton in Bachelor gulch. Rentskis website wants $336 for 7 days of rental. I asked them why it was so high and they said the equipment was newer and also because of the resort.

I find that a bit excessive. I think I'm going to buy skis this year. I'll be going to the ski shop on Wed but I was wondering if you had any suggestion for an intermediate skier that skis in CO or UT for less than 10 days a year? I need around size 154 as I"m 5'4 160lbs.

What would you pick that floats well and is good with turns. I'm not an expert at buying these so any help would be appreciated.

Why would you have to rent from the Ritz? There are probably hundreds of places to rent in Eagle Valley with probably 10 or so in Beaver Creek alone. While I don't want to discourage ski purchase if you really want to rent check out some other options for prices.

Convenience.

I will be with my 2 children and I wanted the convenience of a hotel that had this there. I won't even have a car to be able to go to other places to rent. I'm also renting my children's skis there but they aren't nearly as expensive for them.

Gee even at Tremblant we have more than just the hotel rental shops. Check around first. Like Robyn, I wouldn't want to discourage buying, but lugging skis, bags and kids for the vacation is a PITA. Check into some of the ski shops that are listed on the resort website. Some will deliver to your hotel.

But if you really want to purchase, the Salomon Amber would be similar to the Scrambler you skied on.

There are at least one or two other rental places in Beaver Creek village, which is a free shuttle bus ride from the Ritz Carlton. I know there's a Christy Sports there, and I would bet there's more. Those are probably going to be more expensive than places off-resort, but I would guess way cheaper than the Ritz! Check the resort's website for ski rental places...

Forgive me for saying this. But you're forgeting something. \

If you buy skis at home, you'll have to somehow get it to Colorado from Florida! That's a lot more inconvinient than renting them at a nearby ski shop.

Get a cab to take you to a shop nearby? It probably won't cost $200 (the difference in rental price)! Or take the shuttle bus, if you can deal with having to carry the ski back to the hotel.

Also keep in mind the cost nowadays of flying with your skis (I think it's a lot, depending on which airline), and needing to get a ski tube or good bag for them...plus the cost of poles. It really adds up, especially if you don't ski that much. I'll add another vote to demo, but not from the Ritz! Do a little research online - you should have plenty of options. Are you staying at the Ritz? I'll bet that place is pretty amazing!

It just dawned on me and although I don't know the name of it but I think I've seen some stuff on rentals delivered to you. You might do some googling to see if you can find that. It might just be Summit county but worth a search at least.

Is there a "black tie rentals" in Beaver Creek. They are a rental shop with a conceirge service. Again try goggle.

Well, if she skis a week every year, it makes sense to buy. Flying with skis isn't the worst thing in the world. There are always skycaps!

Do you have boots?

There is a pair of 155 Scrambler 700s with bindings on ebay for $189 ... they are out of the demo program, used but good condition. Shipping is $29. Heck, ship 'em to the Ritz Carlton, and buy a bag in BC to take them back home.

Whatever you do, don't buy skis IN Beaver Creek during the season, unless you have money to burn.

I personally don't think it's crazy to buy your own skis, if you ski a week a year. Even if you buy full retail, you'll pay for them in 3 seasons or so. If you buy used or new old stock, it's cheaper than renting.

Ski Butlers operates in BC, but it's $50 a day, which, once again, for a week, is more than she would pay to buy something.

By the way, I am loving that typo! Goggle! The search engine for skiers! Any tech-y entrepreneurs out there?

Heah, I need another cup of coffee!! Black tie is in Vail/BC $45/day for a whole package. If you only need skis that should be less. And as I clicked over to here, there was something on a side bar about kids rent free. Might be worth a call. They deliver to your room too.

Hi there,

I decided to buy. I do own my own boots so I went to a ski shop and found a really good salesperson and I bought last years Fisher Visions on sale. They are being set up now. I also bought a case too for travelling.

I don't fly with my gear when I ski! No worries ever. I fedex all our luggage up there a week or so in advance and the hotel holds the stuff for me. It really isn't pricey and now that airlines are charging baggage fees, it really isn't bad.

Love getting off the plane and not collecting a single thing at baggage!

good choice flgirl. Peter Glenn in ft. laud. has some good deals in the summer, and I frequent there a lot, and if you see the same sales person over and over, he usually hooks you up with a discount. I bought my boots and heaters along with various things this year. I also adapted my ski bag to fit airline requirements, so extra fees would not be charged. I do like the idea of shipping ahead of time, smart lady:smile:
