Ski and Food

Am I the only one who is not hungry when skiing and even at the lodge? I only get hungry once I am back home!

I usually eat pretty well prior to skiing. And if I get hungry while skiing, I'm always carrying a proten bar of some sort. I rarely stop for lunch. But then, I prefer to stop about 2ish. If I'm with friends, then it is all about the nachos and beer. Otherwise, if I'm by myself, I can wait until I get home.

I can never eat a decent breakfast super early in the morning without feeling ill, so I'm always starving sometime in the late morning

I have that happen when I'm biking (not being hungry until at least 45 min to an hour after I'm done riding), but I usually get hungry by 1-2pm when I'm skiing at the latest.

My biggest problem is that whether I'm hungry or not, once the beer, pizza, and/or nachos are sitting on the table in front of me... I have no self control.

Man, how can you ski without getting hungry??? I wish I could do that! I always have to stop for lunch!

I'm with Ski Diva. I take a morning snack (usually a Lara Bar), stop for lunch around 1pm (to take advantage of empty lifts at lunch) and have a snack in the car on the way home. I'm a open to close skiier, so I want all the energy I can get to last the day!

Lara Bars rock as they never get too cold to eat. I've had protein bars freeze so hard I couldn't bite through them.

No, I'm right there w/ya! Once my muscles are dialed in and firing, there's nothing left over for digestion at ALL. If I have a full stomach when I get started, I'm certain to get indigestion. (I'm also one of those who, as a kid, HAD to wait out the requisite 30 minutes after eating before swimming.) Sort of inefficient bodies....mine just can't do 2 things at once. It's either eat (and sit) or ski. Adrenaline dictates that I absolutely ski. So I deal, try to get a protein drink in and hope it stays down. But, indeed, yes, once done, bring on the food.

I don't know what it is - I eat like a horse in the morning. Same thing when we mountain bike - I can do a huge omelette and potatoes and toast... and bacon... you name it. But once I start exercising, it seems to depend on the intensity of the exercise. I have to force myself to eat while I'm biking, but it doesn't seem to bother me when I do. And skiing, I have no problem eating, but then once I stop, I have a hard time getting back out on the slopes. My legs tend to stiffen up.

Exactly the reason I rarely stop for lunch...legs don't like to work again!

I don't get hungry skiing (or paddling), but find I will crash (but BIG TIME!) if I don't stop & eat part way through (depending, of course how long I'm out...)...paddling I find I want something high-protien (ABSOLUTELY NO SUGAR!, light on carbs in general), with skiing I find can be more versitile and often bring a thermos with soup or stew & some granola bars for something quick if I want/need it...

...hmmm, re-reading that, I wonder if I should start moving more towards a light high-protien snack/lunch for skiing...my energy levels this year haven't been what I would like (and I'm getting real cold:brr:)...

...Not the only one!!

I rarely get hungry while skiing. In fact, my mind isn't even on food. Last time I went skiing, I woke up, went off to the hill, skied all day, and then came home and had dinner. I stopped mid day and drank lots of water, but that was it. It's not to say that I wasn't hungry, it's just that I could've waited until I was finished skiing. When I played hockey for many years, I was the same way.

I guess it's true that when I'm moving around the mountain I don't get hungry. But once I'm in a lift line or sitting on the lift, that's when it hits!

I don't get hungry skiing, but then I usually only last 2-3 hours at the most. I try to eat a decent breakfast, egg and toast or english muffin and peanut butter so that I have a bit of energy. We start out at 9A and come back in for lunch between 11:30 and noon on most days. I'm in for the day at that time, but the DH usually goes back out for a few hours in the afternoon.

When we're in Colorado enjoying the "hero" snow I've skied as long as 4 hours without stopping, but not due to me being hungry, it's usually the DH being hungry! I hate to have to stop!

Like Altagirl and SkiNurse if I stop I stiffen up. If I'm skiing and on a roll I want to enjoy it as long as I can. And, if we do go in for lunch I NEVER EVER take my boots off. I'm always amazed to see people who do. I've never even considered it, luckily my boots are comfortable.

I hate to stop for something as mundane as food, so when I do it's really quick! And I don't really want to take my boots off, but the toe warmers usually need air for a recharge, so I'm forced into it.

I try to make the break as quick as possible, so I don't lose my momentum. If it's too close to lift closing (about an hour) then I'll just wait. But there's usually a candy bar in my pocket for the quick sugar rush to get me through!

I like a good breakfast to get things going. Lunch is a rest stop and usually light. Soup, water and maybe cookie or 1/2 a chocolate bar. Apres ski if at home/condo - cheese and crackers, veggies and dip, shrimp and dip. Supper will be later.

Geez, I'm starving by 11 (and yes I eat a real breakfast! I have a very speedy metabolism). At least that means I get in earlier than the usual lunch crowd.

Usually I eat a huge breakfast before skiing-- even if I have to scarf it down at "Oh God" thirty in the morning before I drive out to the resort. I've noticed that if I eat any amount of food during the middle of the day and go back out on the slopes, I end up with food coma and have to pack it in too early. :yield:

When I get home, then I eat a big dinner and relax. :D

Hmmmmm. I hardly even eat breakfast, ever. Typical ski day= coffee at eight am on the way to the mountain, maybe a bagel or something if I can get it down before the coffee starts thrashing around in my stomach. Maybe a granola bar midway through the day, if I can remember it, if not, nothing, just ski ski ski. Then dinner when I get home. That's literally it most days. The days I go in to eat, it usually takes me a while to get warmed up again, and usually I'm skiing too hard to think about eating. Alot of times its coffee... ski... dinner.

I wish I could do the big breakfast thing, and then not much the rest of the day... I think I'm going to train myself to do this.

I'm not a big eater during the day, oatmeal is my favourite ski breakfast, soup and a roll or chili for lunch, but afterwards.. I can really put it away.
