Skate Skiing Help

I know a couple people here have mentioned that they XC ski.

I've really been enjoying XC skiing, especially since my knee has kept me from regular alpine skiing for the last month. And I've finally started doing some skate skiing, but I just have a classic setup so it's a bit wobbly.

I've been XC skiing a bunch lately - up to 12 miles or so and am starting to think I'd really benefit from some better gear, especially if I want to skate.

What do you look for in skate skis, etc? I know the boots are different - stiffer and such, and poles are longer. I've seen women specific gear - should I be looking at that? Thoughts?
