Ok folks, this is a REAL, honest to goodness sign. I bought it in Saudi Arabia when I was living there. This sign was displayed in restaurants, which were either segregated (men in one section, women or women with their families in a separate, hidden section so that horrors....single men couldn't see the women!!!), and many restaurants were simply men only. You'd see this sign prominently in those hot spots.

I bought this sign myself in a local shop.....they kind of didn't want to sell it to me because I think they knew I thought it was a hoot....and also pretty disgusting. Right they were!

Enjoy....

Excuse me while I go outside and kiss the American ground outside my home..........(which I can finally see for the first time since December, although the snow might have tasted better???)

God Bless the USA..................(Now I'm singing a song)

anyone else notice how perky the breasts were on the sign that says " no women " ... hope no single, sex deprived men see the sign and go crazy.

Curiously, just WHERE in Saudi Arabia would ANY woman be permitted to appear as this silhouette does?????? NOT IN PUBLIC.
Thread too political. Settle/chill.

That was the first thing that came to my mind as well--that doesn't look like a Saudi woman's silhouette.

So glad I live in the U.S.!

Oh my, this reminded me of a time when I was traveling throughout India with friends. The hotel would not allow any of the unmarried gals to be in a room with the guys. Then when we finally got checked in and "escorted" to our room there were locks on the OUTSIDE of the doors to lock the gals in! After a heated discussion with the owner of the hotel, he agreed not to lock us in. I was pretty edgy the whole night and didn't sleep well. The thought of being locked in creeped me out!

When I was in Saudi Arabia, we had a big fenced in pool so - high fences so no non-american men could see women in bathing suits (on the military base). And it was interesting how often you'd see arab guys peeking through the cracks in the fence watching us.

And I got in a near altercation on a regular basis with our Saudi gate guard (going between bases). The official policy for that area (Dhaharan) was that female soldiers could not drive unless there were no men in the vehicle, and that we had to have long sleeves, but that was it - no veils or any of that crap. And I was the senior ranking person in the vehicle, so I'd sit in the front passenger seat. And every day he'd say to the driver - "Woman in Back!" And I'd look right at him and tell him that's not one of the rules and I'm not moving. He wouldn't even make eye contact with me, and would just keep telling the driver to make me move to the back of the van. And I'd keep on telling him that I outrank everyone in the vehicle and there was no rule about where I could sit, only that I couldn't drive so I wasn't about to move. And eventually he'd give in, but he'd never speak to me, just keep trying to tell my soldiers to tell me what to do. Just makes you want to smack the crap out of them...

I thought the exact same thing. Picture looks old in style, too. 1960s?

That is freaky! It would bother me, too, if someone was planning on locking me in my room like that!

Unfortunately, it's not just in that part of the world that women are treated as inferior, 2nd (3rd, 4th, last, whatever) class citizens. :( I'll leave it at that. :(

I always thought the funny thing about this sign was that her HAIR was uncovered. I guess designing such a sign proved problematic....the women there are all covered up head to toe, so how do you design a sign that clearly shows it's a woman.....I mean, with the black head to toe veil you don't see any kind of shape......could be anyone under there! :eyebrows:

My husband was once walking somewhere with one of his Saudi male students, and the student pointed out a couple of women walking nearby, both covered head to toe in black veils, only their shoes showing. The student made some kind of comment along the lines of "hubba hubba, there go a couple of hot ones", and my husband said "How on earth can you tell?" The student was adamant that he knew, he could just tell! It came down to how they walked, what he could see of their feet. Funny, but what else could he judge on?

I got a laugh from your description, I can envision this scenario perfectly.  Despite all the idiotic rules they force their women to live under, they never quite knew how to deal with American and other western women. I taught at the university, and women weren't allowed in the library except at certain designated times....mostly it was for men only. One day I just went in there anyway because I needed a particular book right away and it wasn't the "women's library time"....the library boys weren't at all happy about it, but didn't do anything at all except glower at me for invading their inner sanctum. Nobody dared approach me or say anything. They were quite discombobled because of course Saudi women wouldn't do such a thing, they always stayed within the boundaries set for them.

HEY ... what about Canada? Despite it being cold enough to want to wear a Burka (kidding) it isn't required.

You must, however, wear touques and say eh .

self, of course)

Well, they had to use that picture because the silhouette of the burka is just....well....it looks like a pac-man....and they didn't want any confusion! :D Pac-men ARE served in public and can pretty much go wherever they want!
