"Shopping" the weather

Okay, I'll admit it. I'm a complete weather forecast junkie, especially during ski season. I will "shop" the major weather sites (NOAA, Wunderground, Accuweather, Weather) to find the most favorable forecast for Telluride.

This week it's been particularly fun as there is a major weather system approaching the Rockies this weekend. The trouble is, I can't tell whether this is supposed to be a northern or southern dumper...or, is all of Colorado (Utah as well) going to share in the glory?

Anyone have any favorite weather sites?

I like www.snowforecast.com. And I do the same thing! I'm hoping this is an all over dumper!

Sweet! Another new favorite!

Here's what they have to say about the storm this weekend...

"In other words, a storm is brewing, this time most likely to affect southwest Colorado (Telluride, Silverton Mountain, Durango Mountain Resort, Wolf Creek) with heavy snow (Sunday into mid next week), and lighter to moderate snowfall across the I-70 resort areas like Aspen, Vail, Winter Park (please see the long range forecast below)."

Yahoo! I hope we all get a really good one out of this. :snow::snow:

I do the same thing but with Canadian sites. Government website- Environment Canada, WeatherNetwork, Accuweather and Intellicast for the radar.

If they all say the same thing, then things are good (or bad). If they are all different, then you go with the best report right??

I'm a National Weather Service junkie. Once you learn how to navigate their site, which is confusing because it all varies by state, you realize how much information is available! I love watching the radar and reading the updates as storms come in. Plus, NWS gives predicted snowfall totals up to two days before a storm.

Oh, I just noticed they've declared a Winter Storm Watch for the Wasatch. Nice.

TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS IN EXCESS OF 6 INCHES IN VALLEY
LOCATIONS AND IN EXCESS OF 12 INCHES IN THE MOUNTAINS ARE POSSIBLE
BY LATE SATURDAY NIGHT. Whoo hoo!

The Utah Avalanche Center has great weather information as well. They do an afternoon weather report that's almost always spot-on.

I'm a weather channel junkie too. I also check various local weather forecasts severall times and hour during ski season. Of course, I alsways believe the most favorable forecast! :D I particularly like reading The Skiing Weatherman's blog on Snocountry.com

https://www.snocountry.com/geeklog.php?topic=weather

It's mostly aimed at the Eastern U.S.

I am all about weather checking on the internet..I can't stand waiting for the TV to get to my location's weather report, or waiting for the weather to come on the local news. It used to drive me nuts when my roommate always turned on the Weather Channel in the morning! Although I did learn one interesting fact from it...Boston is the windiest (big) city in the country (not that I didn't know that already walking to the T every day)

I actuallly have friends that will call and ask ME what the weather forecast is instead of watching the news!:ROTF:

And, as far as my skiing weather, I usually look at snowforecast also along with the resorts individual predictions and the local news. I've become pretty good at averaging it all!

I second the National Weather Service. Though since I live in the east coast, weather forecast is much easier for us. Just look at what the weather is like at Chicago or Pittsburgh today, that will be our weather tomorrow! ;-)

For longer term forecast, I don't bother with any single weather forecast. I do my own by watching the jetstreams and fronts. That's where the National Weather Service comes in handy. Basically, where the high and low fronts meet is where the precips will come down. The stronger the low front, the more moisture there will be. But the high front is what makes the moisture freeze: the white stuff! And the slower the fronts move, the longer it'll stay at one place: feets instead of inches!!!

Yeah, I was in weather forecast in my previous life.

I tend to prefer NOAA... skitiger.com is another useful one, but I want to say it's only PacNW?
I like Snowforecast.com - thanks for sharing!

Eyes on the sky!

Utahskiweather.com

brought to you by the wonderful meteorology students (and some damn fine skiers) at the University of Utah Department of Meteorology.

I'll have to look at that one before I head out to work at Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR) from now on!
I will say that today was BRUTAL out there. It was single digits all day, with pretty constant wind and snow. It wouldn't have been so bad, but I had to stand facing into the wind all day (a strong south wind). At least I now know my Merrell boots and my uniform are good to go for cold weather. My face, on the other hand, can use some help! I had my Kiehl's skier's stuff on, and the snow was sticking to it!!! But, it didn't hurt from windburn all day, even when I went inside for the day.

I am a weather.com person. And, I tune in to my one local TV station in the morning to see what is predicted.
