Shingrix vaccine

I never had reactions to vaccines UNTIL Shingrix #2, senior flu shot this year, and 2nd Covid vaccine........

My case of shingles in my 20s started on the side of my forehead. The worry was that it would spread into the optic nerve. Luckily that didn't happen. Ended up with a noticeable dent from the scar. The doctor even talked about plastic surgery. My mother's comment was "good thing you're already married." The area filled in over the next few years, so that became a non-issue.
That is such a Chinese mother comment! (To be honest I would probably say something like that too.)

My parents put it off and my dad ended up with a terrible case of shingles with severe neuralgia (horrible nerve pain in his face) for 6 months or so. He really regrets waiting on the vaccine and my mom went and got hers after that. She complained of arm pain after it but that seems well worth it.

Someone at my company has a partner who ended up with what might now be permanent debilitating nerve pain. It’s been a long time since they had shingles and it hasn’t fully reaolved still. Definitely a cautionary tale around the office with some to get the shots.

My arm is sorer than I can recall from any other vaccination. And I am cold despite wearing a warm robe. So we'll see what develops... Planning to take it easy today.

But so far I am relatively pleased.

DH is doing even better with only slight arm pain.

I remember one of my parents' close friends having a really bad case of shingles years ago. Knowing that my brother had optic neuritis after having chicken pox in his 20's I really wanted to make sure he got the Shingrix shot. The best way to do that was to go with him. Neither one of us had bad reactions to either shot. My arm was a tad sore after the first one, and I had a huge sore and warm lump at the injection site for about a week after the second one.

And as an aside, there may be some correlation between people who have had optic neuritis and people who are later diagnosed with MS. When my brother was hospitalized this past winter the drs were thinking maybe he had had a mini-stroke until he mentioned the optic neuritis.

LOL -- love your mother's reaction!

I had shingles in my 30's, more itchy than anything. A friend had it about the same age and it was a big deal. My daughter also had it maybe around 11?

My husband and I both had Shingrix. I think we had some minor side effects for a day or two after the 2nd one, but nothing memorable. Went back to bed.

Thanks for all your comments.

We were very tired the next day. I had some chills. We both had pretty sore arms.

I would suggest that you get it when you will be able to rest the next day.

Felt well enough yesterday to bowl, cook, and do some shopping.

Arm is still slightly sore today, but overall I am very pleased with the results.

I had heard shingles was painful but had no idea how bad it could be (nerve damage? yikes). If I wasn't currently hobbled I think I would go straight to a pharmacy and get it today.

My husband has had it TWICE so I know first hand it's no picnic. The vaccine is definitely worth getting.
Did he get it after having the vaccine? Is it like Covid, where you get a lighter case if you’ve been vaccinated?

Good question. According to the CDC info page for Shingrix, it provides a very high level of protection against starting shingles. Anyone who has had chickenpox can end up with shingles. What triggers the start of shingles is not well understood as I understand it. Certainly have no idea why I got it when I did.

Shingrix was approved by the FDA in 2017. So the timeframe of four years for having good protection is probably partially an estimate based on how long Shingrix has bee around. My doctor knew I'd had shingles and the first vaccine. She strongly recommended getting Shingrix at my annual physical soon after it was made available. I got the first shot that day.

I asked my pharmacist about getting it (I'm not 50 yet) and they basically said if I ask my doctor and am willing to pay out of pocket I can probably get one now, BUT said they'd consider waiting until age 50 unless I have some other condition where my doctor would recommend it because they don't really know how long protection will last and is more valuable as you are older. Which makes sense.

I was eager to get the vaxxed because I had known a woman who had shingles and it spread to one eye. It went blind. She lives in fear of shingles in the other eye. I didn’t mind the side effects!
I’ve a family member who is notorious about waiting out illnesses, etc., who had shingles on their face, and by the time someone else noticed, the family member was rushed to the ER on a holiday to find a specialist who could verify whether the optic nerve was affected. Sign me up the moment I am eligible and insurance covers this!

I had to pay for mine, although I got it at the pharmacy. Or was it the pneumovax that I had to pay for?

It was a couple years ago. Who can remember?

I was told to get it at the pharmacy and had a $20 co pay each shot. Insurance won't pay at MD office for some strange reason. Also due for tetanus/whooping cough and was advised to go to pharmacy.....
