Has anyone with a sewing machine ever made anything for skiing? What did you make?

Fleece tops to wear as an insulating layer. Pattern is from MacPhee Workshop in Calgary. Fleece triangle/face masks - surge the edges and place velcro fastener where needed - not hard. I made a winter coat once that could have been cut as a parka, but I was looking for a long coat, again McPhee Workshop.

LOL - everything from fleece accessories and base layers to soft shell and hardshell items. I do this both for myself and professionally.

:cheer: WOW geargrrl!

Do you do custom orders??
Or do you know someone who does?

I'm really difficult to fit for a number of reasons and most gear is just not built for a girl built like me!

Impossible

Okay......she still looks 16 to me  (kids are 18 & 21? NO WAY)----and now she posts pictures of her rather remarkable sewing abilities  ???

Alas, with my +6.25 focal refraction, I cannot even thread a needle... ..... all the more reason to admire this! (I don't even re-sew buttons on-----I need a surgical-style lighted headband magnifier to thread the needle!!)

We just think this is amazing stuff---what is so totally cool about the site is that we are amassing a tremendous amount of diversity in terms of what members do for a living: we've got ski instructors, ski patrol, doctors, lawyers, teachers/professors, engineers - a very long list ---- I love logging on to the "What Does a Diva Do" thread for the latest. What a network we've got going!

Geargrrl!!! Fantastic work! I wasn't sure anyone would reply and look who we have here! I really appreciate your website of sewing tips & fabric sources!

Jilly, you made a coat?!! Wow, I am impressed. Thanks for mentioning MacPhee Workshop. I had not heard of them.

I'm thinking of trying long johns, turtlenecks, mitten liners, and maybe a fleece vest.

I've only made sweatpants and cotton dresses & tops. Fleece will be new to me. I hope the fabric at the local chain store is warm enough! I may give Kwik Sew patterns a try, too.

I've made many things when they had a shop here in Ontario. Did them as seminar-workshops to learn how to use a Serger and my Mom's sewing machine after she died. My mother made all my clothes except pants, when growing up. She wouldn't do those. So, I had the basics from her.

Fleece is the most forgiving fabric you will ever sew. Hard to go wrong; doesn't fray which may be the best of all. Have fun with it!

MacPhee used to sell only Malden Mills fleece, so it was great stuff. I've got enought stuff, so I haven't made anything in a while. Plus the local store burn't down and wasn't replaced. Fabricland just isn't the same.

Same here, my mother made almost all of my clothes.

Like the little ski areas, all the little fabric shops have disappeared.

No they haven't, they've just gone online.

Speaking of local, if you are going to sew fleece, please do not use the cheap crap that passes for fleece that they sell at various chain stores. It's junk. You can mail order the real deal from any number of places. I just don't see the point in investing time into junk fabric myself. They may call it PolarFleece but it is not the real deal. It will pill and lose shape within days. Great for baby garments that get puked and pooped on, but not for performance items.

oops, can you tell I'm a little opinionated on the subject???!!

here's a really good article about fleece:

If you dig around online, you can get really nice base layer fabrics such as powerdry, Capilene and so on. Shelby Kaava has a FREE base layer top pattern that you can download!!!

Boy oh boy, do I need some custom fleece right now! I need a close fitting fleece that zips all the way up for my post-surgery. (I need easy-on/easy-off that doesn't bunch up on my arm or shoulder because of my immobilizer.) Can we chat? :becky: PM me...

geargrrl says get the good fabric -- we all know that you get what you pay for, and fabric's no exception!

I was pretty bummed when I had to wash my ski shell (cat pee. the d@mn'd critters peed right on the collar!) and made the mistake of putting the Columbia fleece I was using as an inner layer crocked dye all over the ivory parts of the jacket.

Suddenly, my pretty purple custom jacket was not pretty anymore. My whole family was sad. I've got several hours in its replacement, had to put it away for a while, and now have scrapped that project: it's so much too big now that I can't hope to cut it down to fit. I do, however, have enough fabric to start again. On the other hand, it feels good to have been able to buy a jacket and have it fit almost as well as mine did -- for the first time ever!

Pants too -- not very fancy, but they worked well for me!

It's really not hard to do, just takes some time. I can't imagine doing it like Geargrrl does though -- just once in a while for me!

gg, many thanks for this link. Awhile back, I was in a discussion here with someone who was debating the fleece quality differentiation w/me. I not only recall the whole Patagonia Synchilla/Malden Mills Polartec revolution, I was a participant. Someone in a ski shop got me right on that bandwagon, and I've never looked back (pre-made garments, of course, I don't sew!). For awhile, there WERE NO cheap knock-offs, and the Real Deal was pricey (and worth it).

Isn't it sad that Malden Mills, after emerging from post-fire bankruptcy (and the owner PAID ALL EMPLOYEES FULL-TIME DURING CLOSURE) has again had to file Chap 11 :( ??

Yeah, but I'm still not happy about losing stores. I miss being able to see merchandise in person. I'm not big on mail order either, but I guess that's the way it is now.
