Saddle recommendations

Over the years I've had maybe 20 bike saddles, most of which were too squishy, too hard, too numbing, or too painful, and am wondering if everybody else has had the same problems. After reading a review in "Outside" magazine I finally found the Specialized "Jett," which comes in several sizes matched to your pelvic bone width (a reputable bike shop will have means to measure you) and is, hands down, the most comfortable performing saddle I've ever used. So I had to buy four (can't be wasting time swapping out saddles from bike to bike!).:D

I think I'm kinda insensitive down there. I still have the stock (it is WSD, though) saddle on my Specialized Vita. I've heard so many stories of woe from other ladies trying to find the perfect saddle, I've never really had a problem with mine though.

Now, shorts on the other hand...

I hate most of them, so I hear ya. (I've gone through various Terry, Specialized, WTB, Selle Italia, etc. saddles and the best I've ever done before would equate to about "tolerable" - most are pure torture.)

The one I LOVE right now is my fizik Aliante on my rigid singlespeed. On Sunday I even went for about a 2 hour technical ride with unpadded DH shorts and my butt doesn't hurt. That's a first!

I have been sorta happy with my stock bike saddle on my Trek 4900, but I also wear some significantly padded shorts.

It seems that I have "sit bone tenderness"(my woohoo hurts) for the first few rides of the season, but after a few rides its not so bad.

not so bad...........how sad is it that THAT is as good as it gets?

I am surprised that I don't have one of those saddles with the two lambskin covered cookies in my garage. Remember the two little circles, one for each cheek and nothing else saddles. Seriously though, I have noticed that if you find a saddle that is remotely comfortable, stick with it, I think it hurts worse to keep switching them around. Eventually you kind of get use to them, kind of like callouses.

After years of suffering, I ended up with the Terry Butterfly on all of my bikes. It just 'fits' me. I liked it so much, hubby tried it and then bought the Fly for all of his.

I had a fizik on my cube and it hurt like hell, have just got selle italian with a hole down the centre, which is also quite felexible, so I see how that works.

Like Volklgirl, I have a Terry butterfly. Tried out quite a few saddles but once I found the Terry butterfly, I had found the right one for me!

I also use a Terry Butterfly on my road bike. I have the Liberator Gel on my mountain & hybrid bikes. My husband is also a Terry convert.

The Selle italian is much improved on my last saddle, but I think I need to adjust the position of it a little to make it just right. After my last ride a couple of weeks ago in very wet weather I felt no after effects of been in the saddle for a couple of hours, so there is hope.

I still have the stock saddle on my beginner bike, but I encased it in high density 1/8 inch foam and have that attached with duct tape. I'm such a grunge, but it works just fine for me. Now my saddle is marine blue/silver! So ugly, and hard to miss. One day when my bike is totally worn out (the fork is wobbly now, so it won't be long) I'll buy a good one and start getting serious about the saddle.

I though I'd bump this. I'm looking for a new saddle- probably terry, fizik or selle italia. I'm doing a good bit of long distance biking (century next month) and I want something relatively small without much cushion. Any new recommendations?

I love my Specialized Ruby.

Used to love the WTB Deva but my bike fitter measured my sit bones and determined the Deva was too wide.

One piece of advice, do not change saddles before a long ride unless you have sufficient time to break it in. I made this mistake when I got the Ruby. It took me about 300 miles (the entire bike tour) to get comfortable with it.

Also check out the Team Estrogen forum, lots of saddle talk there.

I like my Selle San Marco Ponza on my road bike too. That's been on there for years and I never think about it.

LOL!

Count me in that "insensitive" camp!

Maybe that's why? Once you found the right shorts, you're less sensitive to saddles...

Though to be honest, I do have time I WISH I'm done because my butt is unhappy, especially if the ride is on long stretch of boring flats when my butt doesn't get any break at all. But by and large, I'm off the saddle quite a bit on hills (and hills are why I ride). So that's probably partly why I'm less sensitive to saddle, which I'm only sitting on about half the distance the bike travelled...
