Roxy Joyriders 154 fast and stable

I'm 5'3", 125 pounds, bored on blue runs but timid on steeper black runs. I was looking for new skis this year after skiing for years on Dynastar Intuitiv 68Ls (157 cm) that just didn't work for me; I never could get my weight over the tips and never had much fun with them. I think they were too long.

After buying the wrong skis first (sigh), I realized I shoulda demoed some. I ended up buying the Roxy Joyriders (154) after a day of testing them on icy, sometimes chunky hard pack in the Sierras. Here's why I love them:

Despite their fatness at the tips (126-74-105) and their all-mountain category, they have a carving sidecut, so I could make quick, short turns very easily--as easily as I could on Atomic Hot Minx 145's.

But I also could hold long turns easily, something I haven't been able to do well on previous skis. They are incredibly stable at speed, although I don't think I ski as fast as some of you. I experienced almost zero chatter on this icy, crunchy day.

They are also very fast, and even though I started every blue or black run by saying, "I'm going to go slow and test the skis," I ended up letting them run way faster than I usually go and praying.... I have never been on skis this advanced and never skied this fast, but I felt perfectly balanced and secure.

Also, it's easy to get them on edge and keep them there.

They're also surprisingly forgiving of minor balance mistakes.

In short, they seem like the perfect ski for someone like me, an advanced intermediate who wants to improve. I thought I would choose the 146, but after demoing the 154 and loving them the whole day, I went for the 154s. I'm told their fatness will help me in powder, but I don't know when I'll see powder next....

By the way, several people in the lift lines commented on how pretty tke skis were. Actually, I was kind of hoping for skis that looked like Atomic Sugar Mamas or Volkl Attiva Fuegos instead of perfumed stationery....

Good review, and perhaps a real testimony to going longer, which is a frequent topic lately elsewhere. I hope some of the other divas on the edge re: length will read your review.

The stability of those few extra inches can make a huge difference. Just sayin' -

Glad you like em. It's good to see reviews of the Roxy skis, cuz I think the way they're marketed makes one assume it's kind of a barbie ski. Just goes to show we've gotta keep open minds Though I shudder at the thought that my soul mate ski might be pink. If it is, I'll man up and ski it

Can you say "sticker?" The Ski Diva sticker! I honestly think that if I fell in love with one of the current Salomons, which seriously look like a bad 1960's acid trip, that I'd be sticker-ing like crazy!!

Yeah, I decided that the longer length would give me more edge surface for holding long turns and braking, and I think the longer length also contributed to the feeling of stability. Because of my height, someone recommended I ski 145s, so I bought the Hot Minx 145s first. They were incredibly easy to turn, very nimble, but had no edge in ice and chattered horribly at what I would consider moderate speeds. Powder was impossible in the Hot Minxes (66 cm waist). Also, I just had no BRAKES when I was going a little too fast.

Thanks for the review. It's really good to hear something positive about the Roxy line. They get a lot of flack in my parts for not being one of the "big names".

I demoed the Joy Riders a week & 1/2 ago from Sierra Jim. It ended up being an all day powder day with the constant dump on Tahoe that Sunday. Skied the 162's. They RIP on powder, as well as long fast sweeping turns. Great float. Unfortunately, there was never any pack that day to try them on. Those skis are a breeze to turn & could definately get a speeding ticket on radar.

Barbie ski !!! hahaha, you might have something there on preconceptions. But this ski is built, stable & well put together. hmmmm, something else to be said there, but I won't be the one. Not quite the old Barbie, but maybe the new Athletic Barbie ?!

This ski was designed & manufactured by Dynastar. Some think since Quicksilver owns Roxy & Rossi that it's a Rossi ski. But nooo, Dynastar for Roxy.

I demo'd 154 and bought 162 (I'm 5'11") and I LOVE my joyriders.

I too hated how girly they look, however, the guys at the store said they were more indie than girlie ... riiiiiight.

I ride them on ice and lot and they rock ... if I could haul my butt from my desk right now I could ride powder as we have 15cm here ... sadly ... no chance of doing that.

Huh! I put my JoyRider and a Rossignol Attraxion V back to back in a store, and they looked identical. Does Dynastar make Rossignol skis, too? Is the universe controlled by just one company that makes everything????

The Roxy Bliss and the Attraxion III are the same ski just rebranded for Roxy I think. The Bliss is a bit of a softer flex than the Joyrider. For the solid intermed to aspiring advanced. I chose the 146....although I would have preferred the 154 they weren't in stock anywhere and I'm only 5'1 and a bit so the 146 worked. My skiing and confidence has improved by leaps and bounds since strapping on the Roxy Bliss. I'm even becoming fond of the hot pink paisley and leather Roxy label.

Girly? I skied on 162 cm Joyrider today, and they were flat black with a shiny black roxy overlayed on them. Maybe it's next years graphics.? This ski is definitely a Rossi chassis the VAS is very clearly in the top sheet. I wasn't expecting to like them. I only took them because the rep is a sweetheart . I didn;t go over with the intent to ski the Roxy's I went over to ski some of his unisex Dynastars. Guess what? I'm really happy that I skied the Roxy's! I have a serious ski lust for them. :yahoo: I would probably have to ski them for a week to see if it could be love. When you pressure tail through the finish of the turn, they don't squirt out on you! I like that kind of grip. Alot of chick skis that I've tried from Rossi and others tend to twist off, that is a pet peeve of mine.:( ) Try a little more tip pressure if they get chattery on you. They really seem to prefer ball to arch initiation more so that than totally neutral on the arch. I was very impressed with this ski! Loved both, long hauling turns and quick snappy rebounding turns right down the falline. Also the tails were not overly abusive in the bumps I tend to like the zipper line. I know thats really bad for your knees and hips but that why motrin 800's come in persciption form! Lol! All and all a very nice ski! Lots of diffrent manufactures but only a couple of different "Parent" company's.

Interesting. I just bought a pair and this is what mine look like:

Glad to hear you enjoyed them in spite of anticipating otherwise. I'll be skiing mine for the first time tomorrow, though they won't get as good of a workout as they deserve with my rehabbing knee. I went with the 162s as well.

When my Joyriders arrived, they had a label on the plastic that said "Rossignol Joyrider". So yeah, it's all one big conglomerate.

A lot of companies are that way, even outside the ski world. Same thing rebranded with a different name. Think of cars (Ford:Lincoln:Mercury, Chevy:GMC:Buick, Dodge:Plymouth:Jeep:Chrysler).

Severine, they most have changed the graphics for next year. I didn't even think to ask about that. I had really paid that much attention to them, because I had no interest in the Roxy line back 2 season's ago when they were introduced. But I will definetly be paying attention to them in the future. I am really stoked up on all of the great choices in womens equipment for next season! PS I don't mind the graphics on your skis. I love all of the different graphic choices, they are fun! After all skiing is suppost to be fun! I just got a cute little "Dakine" mini back pack in teal, cream, green, and chocolate brown paisley that I love! Perfect for my keys, video camera, hand warmers, and a change of socks for my always sweaty feet. I think I must be in rebellion from having to wear uniforms ( small mens jackets and pants horrible fit) for the last 28 yrs. If a jacket has fur trim, embellishments or a soft girly color I'm all over it! I love it all. I just picked up this cute little Isis fleece in willow green and chocolate brown. So cute! It so matches my new back pack!Lol!
Enjoy your Joyriders! Isn't it fun when you find the right ski that makes everything easy to ski?:ski2:

PS. HAPPY EASTER!!!!!!!!!

I demoed the '08/'09 Joyriders and didn't expect to like them, either. But they really are a fun, responsive ski that can really hold an edge. Not what I expected at all. And yep, the black ones are next year's.

Great! I could have had cool, badass black ones next year, and instead I have paisley apple green/lavender/orange ones. To make matters worse, I happen to have an apple green ski jacket, so I look like one of those women who color coordinates skis with jacket. But I think people will lose their preconceptions when I blast past them on the slopes. Ha!

Oh--I bought some '07 K2 Lotta Luvs on super sale, so I officially have a quiver... I love the Lotta Luvs, but I haven't stopped loving the Joyriders!
