Road to Grand Targhee on pow day?

Hi there -- Big fan of Grand Targhee but only driven up on sunny days. The road is quite windy. Hoping to go next week on a powder day. Has anyone driven the road up on a pow day in a storm of ~10-12 inches? Is the road passable with a 4WD? (Just the resort road, not Teton Pass)

Under normal circumstances, the snowplows do a pretty good job for the mountain road from Driggs up toe GT. Last March, my friend didn't seem to have much trouble getting up the road first thing in the morning and back down in the afternoon. His SUV is AWD and has good snow tires. We had a ball storm skiing off the Colter lift in the afternoon.

Last season GT was closed on a Saturday after a big storm because the road wasn't clear enough for employees to make it to work early enough. Finding out the status for the resort it wasn't obvious which state DOT was responsible since the road starts in ID and ends in WY. Turned out that Teton County, WY was in charge of issuing road status announcements.

It is very rare for the road to be closed. As stated above the key is to have four wheel drive with good winter and ideally snow tires. What might be a bigger issue on a powder morning is that the parking lots fill up and that the drive can take a really long time as you may be at a standstill for part of it. Make sure to plan for that and go early or ride the shuttle.

This. They do an amazing job of plowing and sanding, and overall the road is not steep. But I would not do it without snow tires. They do not salt the roads. And yes, Targhee parking fills to capacity very quickly.

I’m going in March and staying in Driggs. I’m thinking of taking the shuttle instead of driving up. Does it fill up? Any particular recommendations?

From what I remember being told by a local, the shuttle bus from Victor/Driggs is mostly used by employees. I considered the option for the trip last March. The idea was to get to the parking lot in town in time for the first shuttle, which is very early since employees need to be at work well before any guests show up.

It stops at the Driggs transit center just after 7am, which seems doable. And it looks like there's parking around. It'll depend on conditions: if I luck into a storm, I'll take the shuttle and otherwise I'll drive up. I do remember that road up the mountain can be sketchy and slippery.
