Revelstoke?

Sanctuary Ski Club is heading to Revelstoke. I'm an intermediate skier. I thought the ski resort was beyond me but I was assured that it's groomed but they do get a lot of powder. I know as an enthusiastic skier, I should love powder but I really haven't learned how to navigate it. My husband is more cautious than me. I'm 77 and he'll be 81 in August. Would we enjoy Revelstoke?

There’s a pod that gets groomed off the Ripper chair and it is comfortable for intermediates. They do groom trails on the rest of the resort, but the snow is soft and gets bumped up pretty quickly. I loved Revelstoke as a low intermediate but my reaction was that it inspired me to want to be a better snowboarder and skier… not that it was a groomer paradise. I’m afraid you might not enjoy it as much.

@IKam - I'll give some context to my opinions, as I think it's pretty important in understanding where I'm coming from, and valuable for you to make a decision for yourself if you'll enjoy it or not.

[i.e. some of this might come off as complaining that I got the short end of the stick for snow conditions...]

I've only been there once, at the end of February, this year. They were in a big lull of weather...no new snow for the two weeks prior to arrival, above average temps, so the freeze/thaw cycles weren't helping anything. I went for the tree skiing, big bowls, and off-piste terrain. While it was all skiable...it wasn't exactly enjoyable skiing until afternoon, when things really started to thaw out and we hit some spring conditions. I got bored sticking to groomers pretty quickly.

The layout is wonky and the map doesn't exactly portray the mountain well...I was on a snowboard which certainly made things worse with the excessive traverses and sticky conditions in the afternoon.

There are three main lifts: Revelation gondola (with a mid-station), Ripper chair, and Stoke chair.

Most beginner/intermediate terrain is on the bottom half of the Revelation gondola...this was almost all baked out, thin cover (or as their trail report said "Marginal" conditions) when I was there. It has a low elevation compared to the rest of the mountain, so is prone to rain and warm temps when the rest of the mountain might be getting snow. There are some good blue groomers off of the top of the Revelation, but you need to traverse across a slow green "Last Spike" trail to get to those trails. Most people take the Revelation up, and don't come back to the base until they're done skiing.

Ripper and Stoke are both mostly advanced terrain (trees and bumps), with a couple groomers from each. And I will say...getting between those two chairs is a bit of a PITA (especially without poles, lol)...LONG FLAT GREEN traverse.

The views are beautiful, and the town is pretty sweet...cute walkable downtown, with some good restaurants (Kawakubo Sushi was my personal favorite). The town gets busy at night, and reservations are definitely recommended for most restaurants.

Would I go back...probably not. Maybe I would book last minute and have a guarantee of good conditions...but I'm not sure I would take another gamble there. I feel like I do have some unfinished business since I didn't get to ski a lot of the stuff I wanted. But with so many good resorts out there, I don't see myself booking another trip to Revy anytime soon.

I'll throw one more thought into the picture that I wasn't thrilled with --- the "vibe" on the mountain. It kind of had a thick "bro" culture to the place. I tend to skew my vacations towards less expensive, less high-end crowds, and bit off the beaten path. While Revelstoke is out there, and off the beaten path, it seemed to attract a lot more tourists than I expected.

I was at Revelstoke in 2024 also in a "low snow" cycle. It was the middle of March. Because of the lack of storms, the entire lower mountain was closed (i.e., it was mud). The upper mountain was quite icy but I didn't mind it too much being an eastern skier ("ice is my comfort zone"). I found the advanced runs to be what you'd expect at a western resort, but the intermediate terrain is steeper than in many other western locations (remember that I'm only talking about the upper mountain). Nearly everything was groomed or skied-off when I was there, but there was some hike-to terrain that had some decent snow.

I agree with @elemmac that the layout of the upper mountain is a bit odd. However, it was fairly easy to get around on skis w/only a bit of skating required. I would NOT want to have to navigate it on a snowboard.

I was very impressed w/the small learning area at the upper mountain. The mix of terrain in this small section was amazing. Three groomed greens/blues on the sides, a race course to one side, ungroomed blue/black in the center where you could even opt to try some smallish cliffs. I could see a determined student progressing from beginner to advanced w/o leaving this small area. Impressive. The only drawback is that it is served by one, very slow chair.

The facilities at the base of the mountain are limited. One or two good restaurants and one or two nice touristy shops. There was a lot of construction going on in 2024, so there may be more on offer there now. I never ate on mountain, so I can't really weigh-in on the offerings there.

The town was ok - a bit of a throwback to earlier times when skiing wasn't glitzy. A few very good restaurants but not much else unless you want to shop for skis or tea towels.

I also agree re the "bro vibe." Definitely not a place to take a family - there just isn't enough to do, not that they don't like kids. I can imagine that in a good snow year the place attracts a LOT of genuinely expert skiers/boarders. I met a few locals who were seriously excellent skiers.

Would I go back? Probably not. There are too many other places that I like better and others I still want to get to.

FYI, I'm 65, advanced, eastern skier.

What month?

Having skied with you and your DH at Nub's Nob, I think there are many other resorts in Canada that would be a better fit for you two than Revelstoke. You would probably have fun on the long blue groomers, but he may not find many trails of interest. I haven't been there but have read assorted trip reports.

Here's a recent overview of Revy.

It's not the ideal spot if you like the option of cruising wide, well maintained groomers. You need to be confident on steeper runs - not crazy steep but my first visit was a combination of love at first sight and terror.

Grooming can be patchy, they tend to prioritise a couple of areas due to the length of the runs and not a lot of groomers. Powder days tend to be crazy busy although it quietens down in the afternoon generally.

If you're after intermediate progression and a range of easier runs to try, I'd recommend Big White, Sun Peaks or Silver Star. There is easier terrain at Revy but it's pretty limited.

January, but after reading all the comments, we've pretty much shelved Revy. Jilly recommended the SkiTalk National Gathering in March 2026 to Banff, Lake Louise. We love skiing in Canada. We've skied Whistler, Sun Peaks, Fernie, Panorama, and Kimberely as well as a couple close to Vancouver. I've long wanted to ski Banff and if we stay a night in Calgary, he will be acclimated to the slightly higher elevation that he has problems with. I don't know much about the SkiTalk gathering, but it sounds promising. Also, another group from Sanctuary is going to Snowbird at the same time as Revy so maybe I'll do that because I really want to take another lesson from Arthur at Alta. Do you know if he's still there?

I'd like to thank everyone for their input on Revy. We have pretty much decided to shelve Revy as we don't think it's for us right now.

Snowbird is higher than Banff for altitude! Stay in Salt Lake if that's an issue.

Yes, I know and that's why my husband is not going there. We go on trips together that work for his health and I go on trips that I can enjoy without worry.

I expect Arthur will return to Alta next season.
