Ski Diva Extraordinaire
So my first time ever skiing was at Whiteface in Lake Placid, NY. I wanted to go back to see how differently the terrain looked to me after 3/4 of a ski season (I'm not done yet!). I drove to Lake Placid under gloomy skies with a 90% chance of snow. The snow started lightly right before I ventured off of I-87 toward Keene. I arrived at the mountain about 8:15 to find cars already 1/2 way up the access road. Busier than anticipated, but it turns out the NorAm finals and "Coke Wednesdays" along with the Canadian holiday week were all happening. So I geared up, ventured out and took a pic. of my bunny slope (hey I spent the better part of 2 days on it).
Up the "Face Lift"...I had been up here before (not a good idea), so my intentions were to do a warm-up run on a couple of trails that gave me a very hard time my first days out. Well, I couldn't remember exactly which way I went, but I hit at least half of my intended trails. It was a bit easier this time. At this point there was a steady snowfall and low visibility. I headed up "Mountain Run", about 3/4 up the mountain. The Summit Lift was closed because of icing, so for the morning this was the top. Couple of blue and diamond runs trying to figure out where the heck I was going, visibility was poor up there. The day progressed, went in for lunch and did more of the same. However, it looked like the Summit lift was about to open, I did one more run and sure enough it was going by the time I made it down. The patrollers and mountain crew did a phenominal job clearing a ton of ice off the lift, which had been closed since the weekend I believe. Another after effect of the ice was a nice coating underneath the fresh inch EVERYWHERE on the mountain. No complaints though, I had very sharp edges
Up to the top and I nice blue run back down. I had passed a decent pitch, but thought better of it. Turns out my thinking didn't last too long. Next trip up I tackled "Upper Skyward". Definitely the steepest run of the day, a nice trail that empties into "Lower Skyward" under the Summit Quad. This was my last run of the day at about 2:15 and a great day it was. I couldn't have asked for a better return to Whiteface...those greens aren't as scary as I remember either! Those diamonds though.....well ya know
Bunny Hill=Straight ahead
NorAm setup from the Face Lift
Top of Little Whiteface
High Country Glades
The Summit before word got around that it was open : )
About 1/2 way down Upper Skyward..I needed a breather after the steep section. A guy next to me went down because he ventured too far off onto the side. Aka tried to ski on huge fallen icicles w/ a snow dusting on them.
Almost to the bottom of Upper Skyward..visibility was even worse than that I swear (ok maybe it just seemed that way)
Lower Skyward..where you get to ski under the lift fatiqued from the previous section; it was great! There was about 2" of powder at the top and on Lower Skyward..I was driving my tips a bit too much and almost lost it on the last run pphhew. Great day.
Winter is still going full blast at Whiteface.
