Resort or industry workers: are you not working this season because of COVID?

It does seem like an expensive way to get them tuned . . .
Hmm, but maybe an interesting side hustle for him this year if he doesn't work at the shop. I don't remember where, but I remember reading last year about someone where you leave your skis by their garage, either leave the $$ or pay with Venmo, and they let you know when the skis are done for you to pick up in an equally socially distant way. Even if just for family and friends... If he doesn't want to work in the shop, I'm guessing there are plenty of people in need of a good tune that don't want to step foot in a shop.

Good idea!

Back 10-15 years ago, there was a man who did high end ski waxing and tuning in Raleigh. Needless to say there aren't many options for getting skis properly tuned in central NC. My shop doesn't even have the equipment to do a stone grind. Since there was an active Ski & Outing Club that had a race team, he probably had plenty of business.

Real estate in ME has been CRAZY!! I take it that’s the case in northern NH as well?

That seems to be the case in a lot of places. Here in Seattle the already hot market is even hotter with double digit prices increases. I have immediate family members that are realtors and they are crazy busy. My good friend in Denver works in construction and they are overwhelmed with work. There's historically low interest rates, and lower inventory because a low of people don't think it's a good time to sell.

I'm in the market for something at Sunday River, and it has been dismal this summer. 1) pretty much nothing has come on the market the past few months at least in my price range haha, 2) when something good does come up they can go under agreement in less than a day (one of them didn't even have pictures up yet and someone bought sight unseen within 12 hours of listing), which was also before my appt. even came up to view it the next day, 3) So many cash offers happening that it's incredibly hard to compete for anyone who doesn't have hundreds of thousands of dollars just lying around..

Fun times!

I also do worry what it will mean for locals as the prices drive up further and further. This most definitely also impacts the seasonal and regular rental market in the area. I saw some of the highest prices, by several thousand dollars, this season when looking for my seasonal than ever before, from multiple owners.

It's a good time to sell, as long as you don't need to turn around and buy!! haha

I haven't made a decision, but I'm pretty concerned. We have family members who really can't afford to get sick, so it's hard to justify a fun job for such risk. Our little mountain is *crowded*, and there's just no way I can be wrangling a bunch of 9 year olds all day as I used to. It's hard to know what kinds of changes will be in place, so I'm waiting to see what that looks like. It might be the year I learn to cross country ski...

First post and a mistake - forgive me - I meant to reply to another person above who was commenting about bathrooms! (I do not know how to reply in the thread, I tried a few times, but good info for others perhaps anyway.)

Hello. I found a way to use the bathroom without going into public bathrooms that has been a huge game changer this summer on road trips. it is not the most elegant and is like camping style but I plan on adopting this for ski season as needed. one main thing stopping me from ski season was the bathroom - as it is the first thing I do after my drive to the slopes before skiing. with enough practice you can relieve yourself in your car - like I said not elegant but doable. This summer I used this on the side of the road, protected from onlookers and at rest stops in a corner away from anyone. Also when I was in the park and not wanting to use the restrooms. It was SUCH a relief!!

There's also a "potty" that someone made that works on a car seat (can google) but it is sold out. Of course this all works best if can park close enough into the slopes. The ones I used were pee-buddy and Syarme female urination device (and I used an extra bottle) both on amazon.

Also, this is exciting (though sorry it is so hard)! Do you know what is driving the demand (maybe via your realtor)? Are remote workers looking to move there full time, or just expecting to be able to spend more time in a vacation place?

It's definitely going to be an interesting season. This will be the first season in 31 that I'm not going to teach! I've taught full time every winter since 1989. My decision was very difficult but my safety and health are more important than teaching! I will at least get to use my lifetime pass at Copper! If you are skiing Copper let me know!!
Stay safe and ski safe!

WOW! Now THAT is big news! What a loss for Keystone. Best of luck, whatever you decide to do.

I wonder for the instructors who aren’t returning but are still skiing, is it because of the specific operations put in place by your resorts for lessons? I signed up for an adult seasonal program, and I’m friendly with one of the instructors for the ladies groups from when I participated years ago. I wanted to know her feelings about it and if she’d be there before I signed up. She told me that her concern is for the “other” stuff with skiing, so lodges and bathroom breaks etc., but not really much concern about the teaching part. This may also be because she’s in the seasonal group that retains a lot of clients from one year to the next, so it’ll be a fixed group of people they can deem as trustworthy to follow the rules etc. She encouraged me to join in. Perhaps would be different if she were doing lessons with random clients or a lot of changeover throughout the day/weekend/season, I’m not sure.

Lady Salina is that she works for WB. She's been in the states with her husband. So now she would have to quarantine for 14 days on arrival. Which is tricky when you live in shared housing on site. She decided not to do it this year.

That is definitely understandable, those logistics with Covid would be really something..

I'm not teaching this season because of the job would require me being inside for part of the day breathing the air of other people. I haven't done that since March 1. They don't pay me enough to do it several days a week this winter.

Plus, if NH does what VT is doing and tells MA residents not to cross state lines without a quarantine/negative covid test, those rules would apply to me since I drive back and forth from MA to NH every week. Doing that every week would not be possible.

The stress of using those bathrooms and eating in what will be the temporary locker room would be unbearable. The stress of trying to get back and forth every week between MA and NH - safely - without violating the state's rules would be unbearable.

I can't bring this virus home to my vulnerable spouse.

I totally understand respect your decision and makes total sense! I just wanted to say I wish NH would put protocols like that in place, we need them in NH, but I can't see Gov Sununu ever doing that. I wish I am proved wrong! A long time NH resident told me they think that may be one reason VT is so strict against NH---Sununu is not the most helpful partner in this all and could be doing a lot more but I should not get into politics.

Some NH towns have stepped up to make their own mandates for masks in the least. Work is typically an exception for quarantine also but I totally get why you would not be wanting to do this even if that was true. I agree about the stress it all causes as you describe. Good you are watching out for yourself and your spouse.

I wasn't going to teach but we are very small area and they ran motocross all summer with covid protocols in place and it all worked well.
I went to orientation/open house and was going to tell them I was done but instead I was begged back but if I get spooked I will not teach. Nothing is worth risking getting sick.
