Red lensed goggles?

I'm interested in a pair or Anon goggles that claim to have a "red lens mirror" for the lens. What does this mean?

What will images appear to look like when I look through the goggles?

Here is a picture of the lens:

From what I can find those lenses are for sunny to partly sunny days. I haven't a clue what they'll look like when looking through though. You should be able to buy a replacement lens though if the deal is killer on the goggle and you don't end up liking the lens.

According to the Oakley site, bright days. Neutralized something. Persimmon is your best allround.

They are selling for $39.99, do you consider that a killer deal? I think it's pretty good.

..persimmon huh? I will keep that in mind. Thanks

No, I haven't. These were selling on ebay, now I lost the page. I thought I put them in my watch list, but now I can't seem to find them!

I think mirrored lenses tend to reflect the light more than non-mirrored lenses, so they may not be best for flat light. Probably better for when there's a lot of sun.

My 2 cents: I prefer to have a pair of goggles for sunny days and another pair for cloudy/dark days. My husband will buy special lenses and swap them out in the same goggles, but it's kindof a pain. And you risk scratching/cracking (or just plain smudging) the lenses the more you mess with them. Not to mention - you can often find a second pair of goggles for the same price (or less) than a good pair of replacement lenses.

Red mirrors are likely going to give you a pinkish tint to the snow and be good on sunny days. And if you get a good deal on them and don't like them, you can probably resell them without it being much of a loss. I would definitely have a second pair of goggles for flat light days.

I'm with Altagirl on this one. I have two pairs, one for sunny and one for flat. I used to have some Zeals with interchangable lenses, but they started to fall apart pretty quickly. It's hard to go wrong with a lens choice on a sunny day, but IMO, it's essential to have a really good flat light lens.

Ditto on that. I can't think of any mirrored lenses intended for bright conditions that I was really unhappy with. (Some fog more than others, but even that is rarely an issue on a sunny day). Flat light lenses OTOH are harder - you need something that enhances contrast and really doesn't fog and all of that.

I have a pair of Smith Anthems with sensor mirror lenses and DH skis with Oakleys with High Intensity Yellow. Both of us are very happy with them.

What type/colour lens do you think is best for flat light?

The color and description vary manufacturer to manufacturer. They will usually advertise it as "high intensity" or "amplifier" or something like that.

Rose/persimmon colors usually help add definition.

Yellow usually makes everything seem brighter.

Blue is for night skiing - it's supposed to help with the combo of darkness and artificial bright lights. (Moto racers also use that for racing in stadiums at night, etc.)

This is great to know! I just bought a pair of Smith Anthems at Ski-Rex. I had very little idea what I was looking for, so I just went up to the Smith tent and asked him for a pair good for flat light, and that's what he gave me. And for 40% off, woohoo! :becky:

I never ended up buying them, actually (lol, all that for nothing, right?) but I think I have found anothor pair that are better than those goggles. To be completely honest, I go for looks before comfort. I've come to the conclusion that the white strap *see pic above* will get dirty and will look bad.

But at the moment, everything is on hold until I can secure an address in the US. Things I order online from the states to come here take wayyyyyyy too long and end up in customs (I placed an order Sept. 1 and still have yet to receive it!!! :()

One more thing on the goggle topic. My brother bought Shaun White's Oakley goggles and he is very satisfied with them. I believe they contain a persimmon lens (the orangy coloured one?) Just to make sure I understand, a persimmon lens is good for an "all-around" condition day?

I have 2 pairs of Anthems. I do like them pretty well although I think I'll eventually need a pair with a fan as my face generates a lot of heat so I get fogging easily.

Yeah - persimmon or rose is what I go with for basically an "all conditions" lens. The only step better would be one of the light sensitive ones that changes with the amount of light... but those are really expensive and I've heard mixed reviews on them. So for a reasonably price, one goggle to do it all type of lens - I'd go with persimmon.
