Ski Diva Extraordinaire
This weekend I was looking for a smaller mountain that was relatively inexpensive for lessons for my BF. Ragged fit the bill with lift, lesson and rental under $100.
First off, Ragged was great, and I know this mountain is not terribly popular due to past management issues and closures, but I had a blast and it seems to be a well run little mountain now.
The BF and I drove up and it should have taken 2 hours from Boston, but it took over 3 hours with the snow from Saturday that was continuing Sunday morning. Apparently we just missed a 59 car pileup though, so I'll count my blessings! Once we finally arrived, I unfortunately made the poor choice of taking the BF (who has had 1 skiing lesson, but talks a big game) up to the top of Ragged's Spear Peak, which has a green run to the bottom. About halfway down, he fell, and while trying to put his ski back on, the heel piece actually came off!
So he had to walk the rest of the way down and was PISSED. This of course led to our first major skiing-related blow out. Fortunately, he was in higher spirits after his lesson, but still not happy with me. However, I can kind of tell that he wants to get good at skiing, but doesn't want to admit that to me.
As for my skiing, I had a blast while the BF was in his lesson. The trails had great fresh snow on them, so it was totally worth the 3 hours drive for me. Ragged has a blue "glade" called Raggae Glades, which is basically just a trail with a few extra trees on it. However, it's not groomed at all, so it was a fun challenge for me. This was the first day they'd dropped the ropes on this trail and as such the cover was not terribly thick, and I managed to gouge a base. But hey, I have brand new skis on the way this week, so I wasn't too upset! I'll have to wait till later in the season to tackle any glades in the new ones though!
After the lesson, the BF did "get back on the horse" and we tackled the trail from the Spear peak two more times and his ability was markedly improved and I enjoyed myself jumping around on the side of the trail. I managed one spill on the day when I hit a nice big ice hunk of a bump on the side of the trail: on ski popped right off and I tumbled down.."meant to do that!"
In the end, a great day of skiing at a great little mountain, which I will definitely be back to! Hopefully the BF will be as well
Here's a view from the top in the afternoon once the snow cleared:
And me looking goofy in my new helmet
