Proper pronunciation

Am I the only one with pronunciation problems? I don't want to appear stupid, I just want to know!

So let's get to it:

Which do you say, Bliz-zerd or Bliz-zahrd?

I'd always thought it was the latter, til I was talking with the marketing rep last spring and she actually said the former.

Other problems:

Is Dynastar pronounced with a long I sound, or a long sounding e (as in dee-nastar)?

And what about Stockli? Is it pronounced stuckli or stockli (with a long O)? :noidea:

My understanding is that Dynastar is :dEE-nuh-star
Though I always want to say otherwise.

I know I've been around others who have said bliz-zahrd but I don't know what's right on that one. Maybe we're just trying to be hoighty toighty. ;)

Interesting questions -

I'd say Blizz-erd, Dee-nastar and Stock-lee (but with a short O, not a long one). And I don't know the right answer, that's just how I say them.

When I can remember the word I'm always wondering about, I'll post it here, too. But now I have to work. Rats.

Who knows how to pronounce Gros Ventre? This is a common ski run name and it always gets me.

Maybe its the french influence but:

Dye-na-star
Blizz-ahrd
Don't see stockli around here much.

Also we always jokingly called Blizzard - Buzzards!

As for Gros Ventre - that would be french. Gros - large, Ventre - like venture or a doing. Say it like grosse ven-tur.

Actually, Jilly, I think Gros ventre means "big belly". This was a derogatory name given by the French to members of an Indian tribe in Montana, probably because many of them were starving.
I know - more info than anyone wanted, but I can't help it.

Also consider that Stockli is supposed to have an umlaut over the o. So it's like Stoeckli. I think the actual pronunciation is with a german accent and somewhere in between Ski Diva's two guesses, but unless I was speaking German it would seem a bit over the top to really try to pronounce it with a proper german accent, I think?

cyn, just like english the french have different meaning for the same thing. French slang is really different. Literally taken is one thing, slang - something totally different. I get a kick out of reading some translation material I get. It doesn't make any sense at all. At least the "gros" is big/large in both!

Dee-nah-star

Do you pronounce the g in Rossignol ? We've said "Rozzies" for so long I'm not sure.

Lol, well maybe that's why I see that name everywhere. I pronounce it like Jilly, but when I was in Jackson, they had a very different pronunciation. I can't even remember it now, odd it was.

Around here - Rossignal - is Ross-i-nhal. "g" is silent. Again french influence. Another one - piste - pise-t or piss-t?

Or as one of my instructors said: I'm not sure if she said piss-off or off-piste!
(SkiMave - that was Stevie G!)

Well if it's like the way I was taught to speak French, it would be something like: grOH vahntruh with a little bit of a roll on the "r" in ventre (not quite Spanish roll but not a flat "r" either). :D "S"es aren't pronounced unless they are followed by an "e." Then again, that was 3.25 years of high school French over 14 years ago, so take my memory for what it's worth....

At the Jeanie Thoren talk tonight it was dee-na-star.

(And I still can't remember the word I always wonder about - dang!)

For me:

Blizz-erd or Blizz-ed
Stoke-lee
Deen-a-star
Rozz-inol (silent g - I agree)
Peeste - these last three are the way I heard these pronounced in France, but you'd have to allow for the French accent. The Chamonix valley is the home of Dynastar, so I hope that is correct!
