Proper Equipment Prevented Major Injury

Wisconsin was blasted with a snow storm on Wednesday. DH and I decided to ski last night. I was all bundled up put on my helmet and goggles (DH asked if I really needed my goggles). We were skiing on a pretty empty hill. I was going down a blue run. DH was at the top watching me. Now, this is a really small hill. It’s very wide and not long at all. I’m skiing and thinking that my form is awesome… I’m really concentrating. I hear something behind me and before I could even react I was completely hit from the side and went flying. I felt like I was tackled. My head and right side of my body hit the ground hard. When I stood up I was face to face with teenager who was obviously stunned. He told me he caught an edge. My DH said he was skiing backwards and caught an edge, then did a little jump directly into me. He said there was no way to avoid… we were the only two on the hill. My helmet was cracked, my pole completely bent and I’m sporting a wicked black eye. Thankfully, I was wearing goggles because my face/helmet hit his ski. I really only have a huge black and blue bump from where my goggles hit his ski. That could have been my face! He was asked to leave the hill by ski patrol.

So… today I am off to a conference, with a black eye. I’m so glad I wore a helmet. When I told my friend what happened (she is taking a ski trip this weekend) she was stunned. BUT she laughed when I told her to wear a helmet. She said she never does. I told her that this accident was not my fault. We were the only two people skiing (although he must have cut across from another area because I was the only one skiing when I began down the hill). I think she is stupid for not wearing a helmet. Sometimes accidents happen.

I also need to mention that I am thankful my bindings were set correctly! My skis popped off and I did not injure my legs!!!!

Oh my! Thank goodness you are okay!!! My heart lept into my throat when I read this - I have a secret fear of just this kind of thing happening and DH is always telling me "don't worry, the uphill skier has to watch out for you"

I'm so sorry you experienced this but soooo glad you are not severely injured.

And you friend needs to re-think her equipment choices...

Oh man, I'm so glad you're okay. Must've been so scary! I hope your friend ends up taking the food for thought. Thank god it was your helmet that split open, not head!

Wow, glad you're ok, skihawk. Time for new helmet and poles, though. Good for ski patrol to ask that boy to leave, although he should be the one paying for your new helmet, etc.

Wow! Glad to hear you are OK.

Also good to hear that the kid was kicked off the slopes.

There are many times I have fallen where I am glad I had my helmet. Hopefully this story will change your friends opinion.

This is an at-work friend?

Go home at lunch time and get the helmet. Maybe the visual will make more of an impression on her? (it's probably too late in the day there to be suggesting that now, but, dang! Your face is a mess and she's laughing off the idea of a helmet?)

Well I don't mind if the kids in the terrain parks ski backwards. That's the proper domain for it. Hell once I get up the balls to spend more time in the park perhaps I'll figure out the backwards skiing thing - then again maybe I'm beyond learning *that* particular trick!

But damn that's scarey and I'm always on the lookout for such stuff. I'm VERY keenly aware of the noise around me on the slope and I try to do as regular of headchecks as possible to know who/what might be coming up around me - I might lose form for a few seconds but I'd rather be fully aware.

Then again lately I've taken to doing secondary checks while driving when the light turns green to make sure no one is running it. Sure the other driver would be at fault, but do I really wanna be car-less and possibly hurt? no way!

My friend that laughed at the idea a helmet was still laughing after seeing my black eye (well... eye and cheek). It's so weird to tell people what happened and have them look at you like you were crazy for skiing. I explained that I went skiing yesterday. At least 5 people said, "Oh, you took off work." Even though I had talked with all of these people yesterday... I explained that I had gone night skiing. I think my co-workers think I'm crazy for skiing.

Today while I was at the conference, I kept thinking if there was any way I could have prevented the accident. I am very careful and I did not even hear the skier or see him. The whole incident was very bizarre. I was always afraid that this type of thing would happen.

On the positive... I'm ok... I look surly with my black eye... and I'm excited to get a new helmet and poles.

Thank goodness you're okay! As others have said, better the helmet than your head cracked!

There's another thread around here with a lot of helmet horror stories. Read some of those and pass them along to your friend... I'm always shocked by the lack of knowledge or the laissez faire attitude. I shared a chair up with a woman the other day who looked at me (dressed in black that day from head to toe, including black skis  ) and said "You must be an expert what with the helmet and all" (or something like that). I gave her what must have been a dumbfounded look and said, "yeah, it's not about how well you ski, it's about how well the people around you ski!" I proceeded to tell her a couple of anecdotes, and she said "Wow, I never thought about it that way. I guess I should get one!"

Heck, most recently, on Sunday I had two girls riding with boy and I. They were in the left 2 positions, then 6'6" boy, then me. They asked if they could put the bar down, he responded yes and they just assumed that meant I was good as well and they slammed the side of the bar into my helmet, hard. I would have been in a world of hurt without that helmet.

Holy cow skihawk!! Glad you're OK.... I'm a strong proponent of helmets, wouldn't ski without one! Ther have been rumors out here that some resorts will make them mandatory. Might not be a bad idea. My suprise is that the kid wasn't on a snowboard:becky:

Glad you're okay, Skihawk, and glad you were wearing a helmet! Once again, another story that demonstrates how crucial it is to wear one. Pretty scary to think about what would've happened if you hadn't.

Glad everything is OK. People just don't understand our love of this sport. And walking around "wounded" just gets them going more. As for your friend - yesterday DH and I were walking up to the lift here at Tremblant. The roads in the village are still icy from the "R" earlier in the week. Well if DH doesn't go for a slide. Shoulders move and the skis slip - WACK, right on the side of my head. Now I have nice scratch on my new helmet. But it could have my head!! So that wasn't even skiing, or like your incident, not my fault either.

OMG...I'm glad you're alright! I'm glad the skipatrol kicked him out, too.

People skiing backwards...::shudder:::...I can't imagine. I had a friend who was telling me that he skis backwards (he lives in Denver and has skied all his life) to videotape his kids going down the green and blue runs, because he "has to make them interesting somehow." So, I guess at some point, you get so awesome that it seems worthwhile, but it scares the heck out of me as a frontward person to think that someone might be racing down the hill unable to see ahead of them!

Wow, skihawk - SO sorry to hear about this! You're yet another living example of the benefit of helmets. There are earlier threads about people getting crashed into - it is definitely BAD NEWS. Around here, the switch skiing stuff is limited to certain parts of the resort (parks only).
DH sported a black eye from a similar crash years ago - and sported it to Day One of his first job out of college! So glad that your bindings did their job and spared your legs! Feel better...

As for your friend who laughs at helmets: The G-word to her. REAL SKIERS WEAR HELMETS!

Skihawk,

So glad you're okay! I just started wearing a helmet this year, and can't believe I never wore one before. I had a seriously bad accident a week ago Friday, and I truly believe I wasn't even more seriously injured because of my helmet.
