Prepping for ski season post-pregnancy

Hi all, I have been an avid skier my whole life but missed last season as I was pregnant with my first child. Now that my future ski buddy has arrived, looking for tips on how I can prepare for this first season back both physically and mentally. Most of my ski buddies are men who haven’t been particularly helpful with this. Looking forward to hearing from those who have been on this journey before me!

Welcome! Have you looked around the Family Skiing section yet? Here are a couple examples of threads about the littlest ones on snow.

Thanks! It is indeed! I grew up there and my parents still live there. My dad is on deck as our live in ski instructor and has been taking grandparent ski tips from friends .

I’m worried about my own skiing too since my body feels so different postpartum and it’s been so hard to start exercising seriously again. I do a lot of walking but that’s basically it right now, recognizing I’m only 2 months into this so I’m sure there will be more opportunity in the future.

Step one- see a boot fitter. It's very common for feet to spread in pregnancy. And sorry, but no, they do not go back to their old size. I still mourn many pairs of shoes that I had to say goodbye to. If you had your boots dialed in just so, they may not be anymore. And if you didn't? Time to see a boot fitter

Take your time! Pregnancy is a 9 month marathon, and giving birth is it's own marathon. Your body has been creating and generating life, and we shouldn't underestimate what that requires of us.

If you are nursing, eat well! I really felt like I was eating for two when I was breastfeeding my daughter, NOT during my pregnancy.

Get back into exercise as soon as you can, but very, very, very gently. Be kind to your body and do low-impact exercise. Also, depending on how your birth experience was, you may want to wait before doing any core exercise, but pelvic floor is extremely important in the months following giving birth. There are some great videos out there by pelvic floor experts, or you could get a physical therapist who specialises in this to help explain rebuilding the internal core muscles in a layered and gentle and deliberate way.

I found that my upper body strength was amazing having a little one because of all the lifting, but that my core and lower body were pretty poor, and my basic level of fitness struggled - because you're running on a total lack of sleep for a year or two!

All of that to say, prioritise your own wellness now that you are a mother, and I reckon it's worth seeking out some postpartum health and fitness experts.
