@Christy The place I am after is a 4 night tent camping, fish and game administered location, that only allows 10 people at a time for those 4 nights. It is a lottery with less than 5% chance of securing a spot even if I apply for 5 years straight. I love camping, hate crowds, and this place seems ideal as one has to be flown in with all the food and personal gear for minimum of a week as flights are often unable to go due to tides or weather. Not sure what I would do if i get a spot. Last year was my first attempt. I even chose 'bad' dates to increase the crummy odds. For now I'll settle for my local bears with my old phone.
That's McNeil River. I mean to try to go some year but haven't applied. A few years ago I was talking about bear viewing with some friends who didn't know anything about the various spots; they ended up applying to McNeil and getting permits on their first try. I couldn't believe it. They aren't even campers or outdoorsy but they loved it. It's crazy to me there is no electric fence around the campers there. Anyway, I was just taking to the bear management lead at Katmai and he said try buying raffle tickets for the Alaska Zoo for their McNeil prize. He seemed to think people had better odds this way.
