My name is Didi Lawrence and I am that 51 year old on the cover of the Sept.issue of Ski. I am now living in Aspen and lead extreme skiing clinics for women through the Aspen Ski Co. I have been teaching Women's clinics for over 25 years.
I have a reason for posting this relating to Women's skiing and the very big future we all have in this sport. I very strongly believe in the of intention so I am putting this out for you all to explore. I have a very unique opportunity to take the ski journey of a lifetime to one of the most spiritual places on earth. Annapurna Nepal! My inention is this, and I am going to add a bit of my personal story so you will know where I am coming from. My mom is Andrea Mead Lawrence and she is to this day the only American to have won two gold medals in a single olympics,my father was also on the olympic team as a coach and my grandparents stared Pico Peak, so skiing is in my genes. That said, I have been on my own personal journey. I have struggled with alcohol and drugs for several years and now have four years of sobriety. 4 years ago I suffered a severaly broken pelvis and was told I would never ski again, oh well, thus the cover of ski mag. Anyway,that accident brought about my sobriety. I have never been better nor have I skied better.
I am such a believer in physical fitness and staying as healthy as possible. I owe all of my various recoverys to that. I also, being 51 have been competing as a master in extreme skiing comps. I have been doing really well.
Thus,my journey to Nepal. This trip is extremely important for all the above and more. It is not just about the journey but it is about the spiritual too! My intention is to promote wellness,living out of the box,empowering oneself,recovery,and being over 50 redifing oneself. I strongly believe that there is a huge place in the world of skiing for awesome women who are willing to push the envelope,explore their boundaries. I am wanting this trip to Nepal to open the doors for any woman that wants to go to the topof the world to find a piece of themselves they thought unreachable. This trip will be the first of what I hope is not the last. I want to lay the footwork out for a trip next year for a group of strong women to set maybe a world record vertical by women,never been done before. I am wanting to find sponsorship for this first adventure so I am putting this out to you all. The cost of this first trip will be $11,000. 10 days of skiing,never been skied before runs,naming them,cataloging them. If any of you have a direction for me to pursue please send me a PM. I will be the oldest woman on this trip and it is a huge opportunity for women in this world of skiing so dominated by men. My story is important and I want to share it and be an inspiration for all who love this sport. The trip is in March.
