So I figured I'd start the TR now - 2+ days in - so that you can all enjoy.

Got into Denver VERY late Wednesday night so didn't do much more than hit the pillows.

Thursday : On the recommendation of several we took our skis over to Colorado Ski and Golf - great place. We both had to resist looking at their stock too much so that we wouldn't exceed our baggage limit on the trip home! Took the light rail into Denver to watch some NCAA hockey. Before the game found our way over to My Brothers Bar (another recommendation) and enjoyed a few beers! This is a great little establishment and the prices/people are amazing. Then we watched some hockey - 2 games - which kept us busy until 10:30ish when we got to find our way back to our hotel on the light rail. Then we prowled around for some dinner (hate to buy arena food as it's so overpriced) and got some sleep. Did I mention that it was SNOWING in Denver? Yeah we saw accumulating snow in Denver in the morning... but by Midnight much of it had disappeared. Too bad our rental car didn't have a snowbrush!

Friday : So first we had to go retrieve the skis from Colorado Ski and Golf - again impressed. This store could be very dangerous! Then we headed up to Loveland for our first day of Colorado skiing. As we were leaving city and heading into the foot hills we didn't see too much snow and started to wonder what we would actually see at Loveland... we needn't have worried. Can you say POWDER DAY?:D There was 14+ inches of fresh, plus continued snow squalls as well as a decent amount of snow over the 2 previous days amounted to essentially 2 ft ++ deep snow on the mountain. Due to picking up our skis we didn't arrive for first tracks, but as the mountain was so uncrowded it didn't really matter. All I can say is WOW to that snow.

Now on to the actual skiing of said snow. As promised I took a spectacular faceplant or two. :ROTF: But it was sooooooooo soft that it was a no harm done situation. Let me just say that skiing powder is a WHOLE NEW thing. And definitely not easy for an east coast skiing in her 4th season (and last season almost doesn't count as I had so few days on snow)! No doubt it was fun, but boy it was work and at times I felt like a complete beginner trying to ski this stuff. A couple of times I would feel as if I was almost getting the hang of it, so I'd be going along for a couple turns thinking - hey maybe I can ski this. This would almost immediately be followed by a spectacular fall. But as I said no harm done other than to my ego! I promise to post pictures when we get home - yup the face plant as well as one where I actually looked semi-good. Oh and riding lifts without safety bars - that was another new experience for me. Both of us pooped out after a couple of hours on mountain. When we get home we start training for Diva Summit  So we put our stuff together and decided to head through the tunnel to have a look around Silverthorne as it was still early.

Silverthorne seems like a nice town and like a good place to stay on a future trip perhaps. We checked out the various ski shops we could find. The only real "find" was Pure Mountain Outlet who was going out of bussiness. All their decent skis were gone but the clothing and other stuff was still to be had at insane prices - once again the fear of the airport kept our purchasing in check! Also met a really nice Aussie shepheard in one of the shops! Then it was time to head back to Denver. Now on our way through the Tunnel westbound we found a decent snow squall at the exit, but didn't think much of it. On our way back up to the tunnel we encountered white-out conditions with mandatory chain up for commercial vehicles - and boy that was meritted as we saw trucks and others slipping all over the place. We were backed up stopped for a few miles! Thankfully I insisted that we rent a 4WD/AWD vehicle so we were fine other than wondering just how long we were gonna be stopped and also if one of the other not so solid vehicles in the traffic was gonna hit us. We finally got to the tunnel and the rest of the drive back was uneventful.

Last night we checked out two more Denver bars - Breckenridge BrewPub and Blake Street Tavern. More good beer, and good food at BB where we had dinner! Then it was time to sleep!

(I'll update more as we go - we're here till Monday night!)

I'm glad you are enjoying CO! The snow at the Diva Summit will be lighter and fluffier! I imagine what you skied in yesterday was wet and heavy.

I'm so hopeful we get to meet up! I just HAVE to meet and ski with you! Skiing the powder is some of the best giggling I have EVER done! :yahoo:

Don't let your ego get the best of you.

It's PERFECTLY normal in Colorado to wipe out in powder...EVEN for Natives!!

Don't have too much fun. I'd hate for the chaffeur to have to become guardian. :nono:

It's still winter in the high country. I skied Copper this week and the snow the last 2 days was awesome, temps never got above 30 degrees, definitely not spring skiing.

There's still so much snow that it's hard to believe the ski areas are starting to close.

Ohhhhhh, my .... that place has pretty good stuff. I'm glad/not glad I didn't know about that yesterday on my way home. (But good that I didn't stop, because I made it with no problem before the roads got nasty again.)

Glad you're enjoying your trip so far!

Ski & Golf is a VERY dangerous place. I can't even tell you how much money we (well, mostly soon-to-be-ex) have dropped there over the years. And their service is incredible. STBX bought boots a few years ago during Ski-Rex (their big Labor Day sale) and he realized after wearing them once or twice that they were the wrong size. He took them back in and they exchanged them. Except they didn't have any more of that model, so they upgraded him (to the model that you can plug in to warm the liners!) for free! I took my boots in this winter because I've lost a lot of weight and they're not fitting well and the guy worked on them tweaking for almost an hour. Again, for free.

Let me tell you about my first time attempting to ski powder...STBX and his friend took me down one of the bowls at Vail. Literally, every time I tried to turn, I fell over. It took at least 45 minutes to an hour to get down that stupid run! I took the lift back up and headed to the lodge...I was done! :p But, at least it's a soft fall!!

Enjoy the championship game tonight! I was at the mall today and saw a TON of hockey fans (mostly NoDak). Go Notre Dame!!! Says the Miami grad who is quite bitter against BC and also just has to cheer for the CCHA in general. :becky:

Hi Persee! So glad you're enjoying and super excited that I get to meet you tomorrow. I'm just finally getting the feel for powder and how to ski it. I can't wait until I buy some fats to really get going. :D

Ok. I'm finally coherent after the post-skiing stupor so I'll post the update now. :loco:

Saturday was a pretty quiet day, watched a hockey game and visitted some ski stores, including Outdoor Divas which is absolutely awesome, definitely tempted by some skis there.

Yesterday, Sunday was where the action was at!

NVG and Mr NVG picked us (me and DH) up at 6AM to head to Vail. We then stopped to pick up Robyn a little further west. We had grand fun as the girls were in the backseat! While our wonderful chaffeur was kept company up front by DH. Such a beautiful drive. We even saw some bighorn sheep in the road!

We got to Vail at 8AM where NVG hooked DH and me up with some discounted lift tix... then she and Mr NVG conned us into buying a CO pass so we'd have to come back. :p After some cellphone hunting we all got into our skiboots etc and Mr NVG took away our street clothes and off ot the lifts we went, the four of us - DH, me, NVG, and Robyn.

Well I should tell you that NVG and Robyn kicked our butts - boy can these girls ski, and well once again Real mountains are quite a bit different than what we have out east. I had a blast, had a spectacular yardsale on our second run - too bad NVG didn't have her camera out THEN! :ROTF: Literally I lost everything but one ski and slid down the hill a bit. The only casualty was my (almost) new Anthems which took a scratch. I think they'll still be usuable with their battle wound.

NVG and Robyn took us all over the mountain before our lunch date with Mr NVG at Eagles Nest including some terrain that we never would have found nor had the confidence to ski otherwise. What a blast we had. Skiied solid from 8:30am (almost first chair) till 12:30pm for lunch with one p break in the middle.

Lunch was great fun as our photographer made herself useful all over the eagles nest. One piece of advice I must put forth for Diva week is to brown bag your lunch - Vail food is PRICEY:eek:  When we left Mr NVG to head back to skiing we hit some more fabulous terrain. Unfortunately by this point my muscles were starting to ask me who I thought I was and what I thought I was doing to them. It probably didn't help that by this time it had also warmed up enough for the snow to start becoming slushy sludge in the Lionshead area where we were skiing. After a couple of runs my body told me flat out that it was time to quit  despite all of my desires to finish the day. Luckily logic won out and I realized that getting hurt (or hurting someone else  ) would be a poor way to end my day. So DH and I found our way down to the main Vail Village, while NVG and Robyn went back to hit a few favorite runs until the lifts stopped at 4.

When our wonderful chaffeur reappeared we all changed up and NVG gave us a bit of a tour of some sites in Vail Village. We closed down the red lion with some improvised nachos, did a little shopping, and then headed East.

Many interesting things were learned on the way back. Mr NVG is definitely a lucky man as we learned that NVG is a spread eagle girl. :ROTF: Yes interesting things happen when you stick three ski-pooped gals in the back of a car! :D

I'll leave the rest of that story to our photographer!

I think all of us (well excluding our kind chaufeur) must have just fallen into bed dead exhausted last night. And speaking for myself (and DH) woke up a bit sore this morning. It was a great great day of skiing and fun. :ski2: DH and I will definitely be returning!

Oh and I must just say the NVG is the sweetest person ever! She and Robyn were great tour guides to Vail.

(yes pictures will be forthcoming once NVG gets home from work!)

Persee....it was SUCH a joy and pleasure to ski, sing and giggle with you and Mr. P. all day!!!! I'm so glad we got you to buy your Colorado Pass so you can come and help us cause even MORE trouble at the Diva Summit!!!! :eyebrows:

Well I'm back at home on the east coast now... time to catch some zz's and I'll have more comments and observations later.

Ok. A few wrap up comments... people in CO (both natives and transplants) are far too nice. In every bar we went to we found locals happy to talk and share recommendations for places to find more microbrews, etc.

CO has soooo much better of ski stores than we do here in the east. I'm so jealous, but also relieved for my wallet! I did however finally find the North Face Freedom Pant (uninsulated) that I've been looking for since December at the Colorado Ski and Golf in Arvada! :yahoo:
