Other uses for ski racks.

Today I saw someone using their car's ski racks to carry fishing poles. Seemed to work just fine. Hey, might as well get some use of them during the off season!

Anyone else know of any other uses for ski racks?

I've seen the old "bic sport-rack" used to move 2 x 4's from a building supply store. Depending on the model 4 or 6 pieces of lumber on top of compact car. Most people I know have a box and use it all seasons!!

I loved my Ski Tote Yes Rack...it carried 4 pairs of skis and poles and 2-4 snowboards during the winter and easily carried ladders, windsurfers, fishing poles and even bikes (with the adapter) on top of my Mazda during the summer. I really, really miss it. :(

And I thought I was the only one who did that. I haven't carried 2x4s, but I have made multiple trips carring moulding & baseboards (which is really funny, becasue they bend and bounce and are a little longer than the car) in the rack and ladders and bookcases on the basic bars.

First of all, I put my skis INSIDE! (flip down back seat) ;)

I do have a roof rack, for carrying kayaks (they don't fit inside the car too well!):( I also have a bike attachment for it but I haven't used it so far. When I'm traveling solo, I put the bike INSIDE, too! ;)

But the best part is, the rack I have (Saris) can be taken off in 3 minutes tops. So I take it off after use EVERY TIME! I know I'm a bit anal at that. But with gas at $3+, NOT having that extra drag when I don't need it helps. I shudder at the thought of having a ski rack on top all summer long.

Having said all that, I wouldn't hesitate to carry bookcase and even mattress on the bare rack if and when the need arise.
